Despite the fact that the overwhelming majority of people on the forums say they’re running around with at least 120k gold in their bags I don’t even have an epic mount. I have 520g on my Hunter main character, and so far I’ve made the following efforts to make more. Perhaps foolishly I learned skinning and Leatherworking, which is useless for gold making in Classic, but I wanted to re-capture the original vanilla experience, as that’s what my first char did.
Encrypted Twilight Texts and Twilight Vesitiments: Useless, nobody buys them.
Stonescale Eel: Made around 8 gold for a stack of 20 last week, but since then haven’t been able to sell any, unless I sell for some stupidly low price, which is a waste of time and effort.
Grilled Squid: Total waste of time, nobody buys them.
Winterfall Firewater: Made 10g for a stack of 10, which isn’t bad, but very hard to farm as the area is so heavily farmed at all times.
Black Dragonscales: Around 15g for three hours’ effort. Very inefficient to farm as I have to stop down mend pet/drink after every kill.
Repeatedly running SM and selling the drops: Highly inefficient, gain around 10g per run, but outlay of time and effort makes it not worthwhile.
So, does anyone have any better ideas? Note that one thing I will not do is boost people for money. I hate that and would rather not have the mount that go down that road.
The only alternative I can think of it to just keep on levelling this char who has profitable herbalism and alchemy.

I fish on Earthshaker (ally) and ZT (horde). Easily make 70g/hour +. Or make an alt, take herbing and pick briarthorn for swiftthistles which always sell. Made 75g yesterday selling them and steel blooms after questing farming around the barrens for a few hours.

What do you fish to make all that gold?

What server are you on? These things go for 10g+++ each on Firemaw.

Hydraxion Waterlords. Medium population, RP server. I guess the raiding population is pretty low too. The plus side is that nobody is interested in any of the boosting/meta/world buff/GDKP/min-max nonsense, it simply doesn’t exist on such a laid back server, which I like.
The downside is that the economy absolutely sucks. Right now I have 60 Grilled Winter Squid in the bank and 40 Stonescale Eel. Both of which I made an absolute fortune with back in Vanilla, but now on this server they’re essentially worthless.
Oilys, crates, eels. Crates are great coz they give sellable trade goods as well as green drops for dusts. 14 slot bags too every now and again. It all adds up over time.
Edit. Fish on the coast of Feralas where the giants and water elementals are.
Ahh, yeah that explains it.
I made tons of gold soloing DMN (engi and enchanting). DE boss loot worth less than large brilliants and all greens/AH with major mana potions etc.
If those materials are worth more on your server, that might be an option.
Back in the day I easy made 150-200g an hour doing so (Firemaw prices).
Try farming sandworm meat to make the +20 str food, that’s a good one.
Make a low level alt and farm the harpies for light feathers in North West barrens, just keep the alt parked there, farm up some, send to a bank alt to AH.
Farm the devilsoar leather in ungoro.
Make cured rugged hides, they should be pretty profitable at the moment.
Alternatively, carry on with the herb alt and farm low herbs like swiftthistle.
Check prices on the AH before hand just to see if any of those are good
Cured rugged hides always sell, but given the three-day cooldown on the Salt Shaker, or whatever it is (forget the exact number of days) it’s pretty slow to do.
Light Feathers are a good idea though. 20 Light Feathers sell for five gold on my server, so I’d need to farm an absolute shed-load to make it worthwhile. I dunno if I can even solo a Devilsaur; guess I’d have to have to try.

Herbalism is by far the most profitable profession in classic so far, and will still be very good in TBC. No harm in levelling that toon. Fishing the coast of feralas is not a bad tip, you can also fish in southern stranglethorn, everything below GG gives you the good chests too.
If I were you I would get some rugged and thick leather. IF TBC will be announced the reroll train will need it to fuel all that drumming. IF as many players are willing to pick up LW as I was lead to belive the demand will be far exceeding any supply that should be avalable now.
Besides that on horde side on Golemagg I’m making a decent profit by afk farming SM herbs and sellig GSPP for 10g/ea. But if players stop doing Loatheb the price of that should crash.
I made tons farming black lotuses, if you have a hunter great, if not, can get level 19-30 hunter for scouting and run with your main to nodes.
I’ve made 2-3k daily when nolifing.

I have around 300 rugged leather, so no worries there. I’ve not bothered selling any of it as it typically sells for less than vendor price.
Yeah, come TBC things will change due to the inevitable drums meta, and LW will become the must-have profession. I’m hoping that this will be reflected in some small way on my server and all that leather I saved will be worth something.
I’ll give you the best gold making tip: Take Herbalism
We are now in P6 and that means that gear, gold grinds and mining/skinning really have little value. Herbalism is the only profession other than maybe fishing that will net you large sums of gold and this is because players always need consumables for raiding and PvP.
A few ideas for you to make gold:
-Fish Oily Blackmouths and any debris you see - Westfall is a good spot and snag any Stranglekelp you see along the cost then use these to make Free Action Potions on my server they sell for around 2g each.
-Go to Mara and pick Ghost Mushrooms and Blindweed
-Go to Dire Maul east and pick Dreamfoil and Gromsblood
-Go to WPL and pick Plaguebloom and Dreamfoil
-Go to SM GY and pick Grave moss and run into Armory and Library while your at it to look for Fadeleaf
I personally have 2 of my alts stationed in Wetlands at the tomb with the oozes near the entrance to Arathi and an alt in the cave in Hinterlands and during down time I’ll log them on and herb grave moss in Wetlands and Ghost Mushrooms in Hinterlands then at the end of the week I’ll send all the herbs gathered on both and make some tasty profit. This is very low effort farming, you can even log them on every 15 minutes for the respawn timer if you really want to make gold.
Also if Large Brilliant shards are selling for a good price you can search the AH for level 50+ blues to disenchant, enchanting materials don’t have a listing fee so if you see a blue for 9g and Large Brilliant Shards and selling for 10g you can buy it, disenchant it and flip it for an easy 1g profit or more depending on prices. I did this the other day I bought 6 blues for 8g then resold them for 17g each as Large Brilliant Shards.
Final tip: Scour the AH find out what is selling for a decent price and farm those items. If you see Elemental Water selling for 8g then it might be worth going to STV and farming the water elementals on the island. It just depends what the demand is.

Brilliant tips thank you. I’ll need to get herbalism to a higher level before I can use some of that advice, and I’d be surprised if I could get a group willing to run DM purely for me to pick herbs, even if I tried to power level Lorran. Don’t have any characters with enchanting so the disenchant option won’t work.
Grave moss sounds like a good bet though, in fact I have some already. Also checking AH for high value farmable goods sounds like a solid plan.
You can just make an alt and get it to level 5 and teach it enchanting then you can disenchant anything you like.
As for Dire Maul:East check out youtube for herbalism farming you don’t need a group you just go in alone, pick the herbs you can without aggroing anything then get a friend to reset the dungeon for you while your logged out and you end up back at the start and can do another run up to 5 per hour.
Make a lvl 5 alt, and train him enchanting. There is no lvl required to DE green / blue lvl 50+ items. So there goes your problem with Ench / DE away
Get a rogue to 20 get the thistle tea recipe, farm swiftthistle, make thistle tea, profit. At least that’s it on my realm, 1 to 1.5g each, I’ve sold hundreds, maybe even thousands. Some low level greens sell well too.
If there was one method everyone would do it, I find small items and lots of them work well. Being on a low or medium population realm is never good for making gold from farming.

Also I try to diversify, don’t just farm one thing. If someone undercuts that one thing you have no income.
Consider transfering to another server? On my server runecloth sells for 5g per stack, winter water 15g, stonescale eels 20+. GDKP daily etc. I myself as a healer (herber) have 15K gold. Most of that comes from Scarlet Monestary.
