Massive FPS drop in 8.1

Hello. I was getting 90 fps with medium-high settings the other day and now I get 20-30. Mentioned it in another topic but I’m making my own to post my dxdiag and not rob someone else’s topic with my issue (however given the prevalence of the fps drops I doubt it is my issue). I’ve disabled all addons to no effect, cleared cache and WTF to no effect, and reinstalled the latest driver to no effect.

I run an Nvidi GeForce 840m that’s been easily handling this entire expansion at an aforementioned 90fps until literally today.

Here’s my dxdiag:

I have the exact issue. After 8.1 came out, my game now runs at 20 FPS apposed to 60-50 FPS. I’ve uninstalled all my add ons and followed the same steps. Game is really hard now to enjoy… I hope there’s a fix for this soon. (I’ve always played on the lowest settings)

Yup, the game is running like hot dog turd for me too. I’ve crashed twice already. Can’t do dungeons in case I’m HECKed during it. I have a great rig, so this shouldn’t be happening.

I don’t understand what’s happening either, I am recommended fair/low settings and before the patch I used to play High+ with 70-90 FPS now I have like 10 FPS on that. Anyone know what the heck happened?

You guys have your OS fully updated with the system drivers as well? Try to launch WoW in compatibility mode for windows 7 and as administrator.

Bear in mind some people are restricted as to which drivers they can run depending on their OS and GPU. I run a GTX580 which cannot use the latest drivers as Nvidia stopped supporting it in the new drivers, Previously got 100+ FPS at 2560x1080 now only 30ish and GFX card is overheating. Was fine before 8.1.

Think I have found a fix, well worked for me, go to System, Advanced, there is a drop down box labelled graphics card, change from Auto Select to your graphics card. My FPS just went from 40 to 123 with that one change!

My card is still supported and has the latest drivers, thankfully. It did not help, however.

Tried this! It didn’t help. Glad you got yours fixed, however.

Wow don’t see my graphic card.

I am having the same issue. I am on Direct X11 and a relatively old Nividia card, but still was 70-80 fps before patch, now I am up and down with it sometimes dropping to below 1!

UPDATE:

Had several live chats with the support people today. Reinstalled my drivers, twice. They had me defrag, run a memory check, use diagnostic tools etc. Overall I’ve rebooted my system about seven times and… No luck. Nothing they’ve had me do has helped or come up as problematic. Couple this with the fact so many of us are having this issue, is it still fair of them to assume the problem is on our end?

My system is not old, and easily meets the minimum specs for this game. I’ve been running 8.0 at 90 fps and now it runs at 20 after 8.1. The patch is the only that’s changed and every other game I own runs smooth as butter. It’s time Blizz admitted fault.

UPDATE 2:

Contacted nvidia and went through all the diagnostics with them, doing pretty much everything Blizz had me do and, surprise! They found nothing wrong but my game still runs at 20 fps! Curiously enough when switching to my onboard graphics I get 30 fps, which is super odd because my onboard card is vastly worse than my nvidia card!

So everything works fine for all of 8.0. Then 8.1 comes out and my nvidia card can’t handle it. Manufacturer says everything is fine my end so… What next, Blizz? Gonna optimize your game better? I understand 8.1 came with some graphics updates but surely not enough to tank my fps by 70? It cannot be my problem when so many of us are experiencing this and the company who made my rig say my rig should be running this game fine.

UPDATE 3:

Live Chat guy had me do about 10 different other forms of troubleshooting and my card is working fine, and none of the things we did helped in the least. I was told it’s not a known issue at this time but they are going to investigate, but unfortunately there was nothing more that could be done. I encourage you all to send your dxdiag and msinfo to Blizz so they can collect more data on the issue we’re all having.

FINAL UPDATE:

So after uninstalling my graphics driver, again, but this time grabbing an older version, and still not regaining my beloved FPS, as directed I contacted support once more. This time, unfortunately, they had no fixes for me to try. HOWEVER! And this is a big “however.” This is now a known issue that has been reported by enough people for them to launch a proper and thorough investigation into it. Apparently it’s more common for people using nvidia but AMD users are also suffering. Remember to send Blizz your dxdiag and msinfo to help them figure out what’s gone wrong! Looking forward to the updates I was promised from the support team. If they choose not to update here I will copy/paste what they send me via ticket.

While I don’t see a decrease in FPS myself (if anything it went up) I saw this and figured it might be worth noting this patch did drop my recommended settings down similarly all of a sudden. In my case, luckily my FPS isn’t actually impacted poorly even if I bump things back above the recommended settings, but it might be related somehow. Maybe useful knowledge for the devs?

same issue shere had 100 fps before patch now even on 1/10 settings when i get in raid and start the bos i drop to 6…

So! I’ve been talking to NVIDIA the last few days about it and got this reply, after trying out everything they could think of, and then they left me for a while while they researched deeper into the issue:

"Hello [redacted],

Thank you for the update and trying the suggestion, this does not seem to be an issue with your video card but the game itself after the last patch.
Hence, I would suggest you to please contact the game support and seek advise.

Best regards,
[redacted]
NVIDIA Customer Care"

NVIDIA informs me that there is indeed a problem with the latest WoW patch and it’s out of their hands. With this new bit of information in hand I contacted support once more. Here was the response:

Hello [redacted],

Thanks for the update. We will continue to investigate this issue on our end. Most players that contact us with this problem are running the game on hardware that doesn’t meet minimum requirements for the game. It is also true for your case. GeForce 840M is considerably lower in performance than the GTX 560 listen in system requirements:
[system requirements link]
[gpu benchmark comparison]

If the issue is indeed on our end then I assume it could be either a bug or compatibility issue with some hardware configurations. If developers confirm it is a bug then they should be able to fix it. But if its compatibility issue with hardware that doesn’t meet system requirements then I can’t guarantee that they will be able to resolve it. We will have to wait and see.

Regards,
GM [redacted]

So my card that’s ran this game at 90 FPS all expansion now suddenly runs it at 20, and it’s because it doesn’t meet the system requirements? This also fails to explain why I am able to run the game at about 30-40 on my awful onboard Intel 5500 GPU - because surely if it WAS a system requirements thing, a worse card would run the game worse and not better. The GM also said that it’s mostly affecting players with hardware that doesn’t meet system requirements… Which means it’s also affecting people who have hardware that does… So obviously it isn’t an issue with our hardware.

Blizzard’s inability to admit fault is getting on my nerves.

Hi there!

Glad your thread got some attention, might get blizz’ response going.

I’ve tried running WoW on my old laptop which could barely manage 20 fps in Dalaran… it’s running WoW “fine” with 30-40 ish fps in Bfa zones…
And that laptop is shiiiiz…

I feel like the GM that told you this , basicly told you that they didn’t optimize at all for hardware below their minimum requirements. Why would i upgrade my pc if i was able to run wow with 70-80 fps in dungeons and 30 in raids? I found that a okay experience. There is no excuse for the game being able to run at 80 fps prepatch , to 20 fps after with constant drops to 1fps for a enormous amount of time.
I have a gt740m card for refference.

The thing is, I don’t think the optimization is even the problem here.

Most players that contact us with this problem are running the game on hardware that doesn’t meet minimum requirements for the game.

Therefore, there are players with this issue who are AREN’T below system requirements.

Considering these forums are seldom looked at seriously , would you advise me i post somewhere about our issues? I feel like i should voice my problems before my gametime expires tommorow

Submit a ticket with your dxdiag and msinfo attached, go for Live Chat for better responses than the ticket system itself. The more information they have available the easier it will be for them to fix this - but that will first require them to admit the fault is theirs, which they still haven’t. Other than that, there’s always Reddit. That gets views.

I had the same problem. Logged out, quit the game. Deleted all ElvUI settings (in case you use it). It fixed a fair bit. I’m stilling have issues though.
