In regular wow, everyone who contributed to killing something gets xp and loot and quest progression. In my opinion, this is good.
So, should it be kept as it is just because that’s classic? I’d rather see mob tagging gone.

no it shouldn’t it is as it is, if you want to not get out tagged then group up, 5 v 1 in the mob tagging will win most of time.

You may be unaware that a few things already is not exactly as it was in classic.
For instance, mob spawn rate in starting areas has been increase.
I urge you to actually think rather than religiously shunning every idea that maybe a few things was done right by retail wow and would neatly fit it.

Yes it should stay, ways to impact your social standing against your own faction are very important to delivering the classic mmo experience. The best course of action in this scenario is to make friends and out tag others and hold your ground.
Getting mob before others makes me rock hard, it should stay.
