Remind me, how many timed have placeholder talents and abilities ever been changed during the course of an alpha, or beta for that matter?
Be honest. You know full well Blizzard did not add them to just be placeholders, Blizzard added them to test the waters and see how many people are okay with being offered recycled content, so they would have to put in the bare minimum effort.

You can do the exact same thing now too. Nothing’s changed.
For sure, there comes a point where it becomes too much, of course. Not more than say 30-40 active abilities or so. But remember many abilities are situational and if you don´t pvp it´s not that necessary to bind them.

MoP had twice the votes of the 2nd most popular ffs, and that was the unpruned wotlk expansion where classes had many tools as well. No thanks for two reasons.
- Max Level AP grinds were not that much fun (for me certainly) especially on alts.
- I like choose how to alter my build for my playstyle. Do I go with Primal Elementalist and use my Fire Elemental more (so have Talents to reduce CD, increase range or increase its damage / HP). Or maybe I go Ascension and get other talents that increase my Lava Burst damage or have LvB increase duration on Flame Shock DoT or what not. These kinds of decisions are fun. It allows the devs to add in more power spells if we don’t have them all at the same time. They can give us that much power in one go so they’d have to give us lots of little power abilities rather than a few that we choose from.
The other point you make about Baseline abilities moving to the Trees, this can be a good thing. If Some Restoration abilities are now on the Tree, I as Elemental can pick it and have to added healing for questing. Or were I to take up Resto again (unlikely) I could pick up some Ele abilities and do a bit more DPS while questing.
I seems to me like you don’t like trees because you don’t want to make tough decisions between some powerful abilities. But with DF we will be encouraged to have multiple builds (not sure how easy it will be to swap these, is it in Rested areas or just out of combat?) so these decisions won’t be quite so tough. You’ll be able to have them all, just not all of the time.
