The first face might seem to fit more on a high elf than a night elf, but actually it’s more a younger adult face. A youth on the brink of or just transitioniong into manhood.
If warcraft had youth model options or body sizes, then perhaps, what they would need is a fully matured version of that.
Elves are very attractive, and up until TBC, night elves and blood elves had the same model. Now while it is nice to have a different model with racial features like purple skin vs pink, silver glowy eyes versus normal or green glows, I think they should feel equally attractive on both genders. This is not the case for males.
Imo it is for females face wise, but they changed the night elf female’s body, making her more masculine and really annoying a lot of fans - in contrast the hThalassian elf female was made more feminine, rounder hips, fuller breasts, . a certain minority crowd loved the female NElf changes, but it put off the majority of the playesr who liked night elf females - the male improvements were sadly equallly met wiith disappointment.
for starters the males gained a hunched neck as opposed to the upright neck. Still not fixed. funnily the Zandalari male model, that uses the same night elf/Nightborne skeleton model, fixes this issue, It is instantly noticed comparing live to classic. Also we went from 3 relatively attractive Nelf male faces to 0. 1 that was without wrinkles, and the rest grumpy and shrivelled.
This was even LESS popular to the vast majority of people who played the night elves
The casting animation some of us wanted tweaked, the one with the hands buried in the head, wasn’t adjusted…it looks weird.
The problem alas is while some of the animated stances, like the battle/combat ready stance animation were cool in principle, they don’t come off that cool on a frame with such a skinny waist and looked lopsided. They weren’t adjusted. The demon hunter looked better because it removed the bouncing, but to be honest, I think a tweak to the animation would have sufficed if they didn’t want to increase the hip size.
To may fans, night elf new models were not an improvement on the original, yet just another ire and for many final straw after years of neglect on such a large race.
Levels of attractiveness are not the same yet, certainly not for males, female bodies etc, but hey. Right now, at least they could add some cool star tattoos and some younger faces to improve things a bit.
Yeah, I remember those days. I don’t know why, but for some reason it just looked so -wrong- when portraying Blood/High Elves, for a start they were the same size as Night Elves, which lorewise they aren’t. Even Sylvanas had that model as I recall?
Genuine question, why did people not like that? They still kept the ‘pretty’ faces, but were more muscular, wiry, like say, you’d expect Sentinels to look, kind of in keeping with the fierce ‘Amazon’ look. I mean that’s just my opinion on it, but I’m curious why that move was unpopular?
Of course, they need to get rid of the curse of that damned bouncing up and down idle stance.
Again, I don’t know why they did that, the female Thalassian model was already quite abundantly female, in my opinion what they should have updated was to make them more muscular, They’re actually too svelte, which especially makes no sense when you consider people like Liadrin, who wears Plate mail, She’s going to have some decent muscles on her, not looking like some ‘Superwaif’ catwalk model.
Yes, that is curious, I suppose it is similar to Undead in that regard, why can the females stand upright, but the males are always hunched? NPC’s in BfA showed us how cool Undead can look if they stand up straight, and it’s the same model, why can’t they implement that for Player Characters. I agree that the hunched neck thing makes no sense. I mean with the best will in the world you don’t tend to see that in the real world apart from the severely elderly in their last years. A hunched -back- is one thing, a hunched -neck- not so much. It especially doesn’t make sense because a hunched neck tends to mean the torso muscles cannot support the weight of the head…Ermm, Have they even -looked- at the torso muscles of the male Night Elf?
The glaring bit I always find personally that needs attention is that waist. What is going on there? That wouldn’t work, absolutely hench torso and legs, wasps waist hips. Logically they wouldn’t be able to walk! (I know it’s a fantasy world, but lets face it, even a fantasy world has to have some internal consistency)
This too makes little lore sense. The Sexes age at a similar rate, women do tend to live slightly longer, on average but only in The West. Add to that the fact that they’ve been immortal, unchanging for thousands of years, only recently starting to age again. For example people like Tyrande, Malfurion and Illidan (Though he’s a bit different) were actually pretty young when Night Elves became immortal. Yes, we do see some Night Elves starting to die of sickness and old age (One of Jarod’s relations amongst others). Now unless for some bizarre reason, every male Night Elf was of advanced years when the Kaldorei gained Immortality, this makes no sense, sure some will have been, but almost all of them? Mind you maybe they have the wrinkles because as we say in the UK “They had a tough paper round as a kid!” (many kids in the UK deliver the morning papers (or used to) and got -paid!- So someone who had a tough paper round is a Phrase meaning someone looks haggard beyond their years )
I can see what they were going for there, but to my mind from reading old comics, someone clutching the side of their heads is likely using psychic powers, not casting magic!
Some of the Vanilla/TBC races did get stiffed when it came to customisation, Night Elves, Blood Elves, Draenei, Gnomes, also Worgen and Goblins.
I think Tattoos are something that are popular across the Elven fans in general, stars and moons for Night Elves, Farstrider type warpaint so that they do look a bit more wild, Magister runic tattoos also for Blood Elves. Nightborn have them, but I think they could do with a bit more accentuating, they are barely visible, especially in armour. Void Elves could do with some as well, for them though I see fractal chaos patterns.
Unless we get a dedicated RP’er on the Community Council (Assuming it isn’t a failed project) I sadly don’t think any of us will get what we want in that regard, but as they say, Hope springs Eternal…
Yes, night elves were a pet favourite, but I guess the love switched after the art team designed the new Belf model
Sylvanas had a pure night elf model, in the lore apparently after classic she found her original body and transferred her spirit from the night elf she had possessed to her own body.
Because of the fantasy, why do most males play female toons? Hot, sexy chick, not because they are realistic portrayal…
To realistically portray what any female in Warcraft can do, they’d have to have arms nearly as thick and muscled as a man’s.
So why change the NElf female but not the others?
Lore wise? Sure you can make a case that they’d be more boyish and flat breasted, but they weren’t before, so changing that only pleases those who love that boyish female or want females to be as close to men as possible. Plus the change doesn’t’ fit a temple priest or a Highborne lady night elf. … and why should all sentinels, hunters or rogues be that?
For the majority of their playerbase, the change made the female model less attractive. But it greatly pleased a tiny section.
The solution would be to have 2 body types. Just like I would do for void elf males. they had the ripped body type, and was the reason I bought BFA, only to have the model change to a standard BElf male body on release, and I couldn’t get a refund. I felt cheated
Solution… offer both.
Indeed… the switch makes no sense… if originally it was night elves that had the fatter rounder hips and bigger breasts… why switch it?
Typically female cultures that have more active physical females tend to have fuller breasts and bigger hips and don’t necessarily have great musculature… it’s just their genes… it made sense or was acceptable for night elves, why switch, then instead pump up the Belf female?
They wanted a sexier blood elf, and didn’t really care about night elves the same way. You do something special for your special faves.
The curious and annoying thing, was the classic model didn’t have a hunched neck that way, so why introduce it? It uglified the night elf male more… it’s like they went out of their way to make him less attractive. OR… didn’t care enough to ensure he came out better… just upped the fidelity and didn’t care enough to fix the issue, because they were short on time, it was late in the cycle, and well… rush.
It’s funny, I have a very skinny waist 27" but broad shoulders and chest 44" - so I understand the extreme contrast, especially if you’re a fitness freak like I am. Originally night elves were apex level fitness, the males had higher musculature definition in classic than any other race - it was supposed to signify a male at the very top of his game, centuries and millennia of peak condition.
But the new model dropped the fidelity drastically, and didn’t replicate the distinction. The demon hunter male model did have one skin that had higher musculature. So we know that option is available.
Solution: give both as body type options… those who want to look more ripped like that demon hunter skin, should be able to choose, …make it a tick box - the same should be available on both void elf and blood elf males. I can imagine melee types would prefer that option and caster types won’t. Besides boys love being ripped and looking ripped. You have it in game, it has no reason to only be limited to DHs who have further skin conditions. Open it up to the entire race.
Exactly, my thoughts too.
in fact, lore wise, men have more reason to be younger. Most males who were Moonguard and Highborne (not clan Sunstrider who got exiled), turned to Druidism after they voted to ban arcane spell casting. You follow the druid lore, they spend most of their time hibernating, un a cave - they’re going to be totally fresh faced and young
Not to mention they were immortal throughout that period. As for the Highborne ones you can also play, well, they love looking very beautiful too, coupled with the general super high health levels of night elves… you should have mostly smooth faces.
I can understand some snarly expressions, but it doesn’t fit the benevolent character of the race. I expect them to have some wise/intelligent expressions, some snarly, some content and some haughty.
Demon hunters should have access to wrinkles galore, because of the corruptive and scarring effect of fel, which isn’t just limited to fel ores, but an aging appearance as if it’s feeding on your vitality and life force.
This makes sense… Ofc demon hunters have smooth faced options, afterall, the reason you have wards and runes is to protect your soul and body from being consumed by the power you wield.
Interpreting the lore, you should have very attractive male faces and young too.
Solution: Add some new attractive faces, and do toggle for wrinkles and no wrinkles. Fit the fantasy you want.
However I hope they know that the face portrayal.
I suspect they were trying to portray wielding great power. Because of their magical capability, a night elf would typically be hurling magical energy with much more power than say a human. His age and ancient power/knowledge would allow him to do this and with everything he has in him. Except mechanics wise he won’t be any more powerful than anyone from any other race… But lore wise it’s the case.
So he his shaking like a leaf because of the incredible power he is unleashing. Using maximum concentration, which is why he is looking into his hands.
Except it comes of amateurish rather than powerful. And the other one comes off haughty… which i guess fits the race. Still it doesn’t look very nice… But i guess not everyone i will like.
Compare that to the blood elf male who looks supremely confident almost as if “this is easy” - fling, fling… which is cool, but it doesn’t look like it would be that powerful. Now when casting the spells with both hands raised… now that feels like he is stretching himself and calling to the sun.
But then that’s why you have several styles, one for quick spells, fling an arm up - druid’s moonfire/sunfire a half clip of the longer night elf spell does that well… instant spells when he pushes it out from this chest (very manly) works well, (i.e. night elf) as does the blood elf male when he flings one arm forward rather than upwards like his night elven counterparts do.
It’s just that anything outside instant looks weird for the night elf male.
Agreed, and they can be a great insight to the elves too.
Star and moon tattoos - signify arcane power, Elune connection and tapping into the stars - this is the core of the magical kaldorei fantasy. The stars - children of the stars, Elune, the pre-sundering civilization - they’re obsessed with, reach out to and wield the stars. Druidism is also connected, because the night sky is viewed as part of the beauty of the natural world although it is above, the priests connect to above, the druids to the land, the mages apply to the people practically, the priesthood spiritually, the druids the land.
It’s all connected.
Farstrider tattoos: This is a a side of the blood elves and void elves we should se more, elves and their war paints , gives it a family type, deep brotherhood (or sisterhood) type of bond, signifying trials, etc. Alleria’s tattoos signify this… they are also magical wards, similar to demon hunters - so serve a dual purpose as runes and tattoos for rites of passage and elven rituals.
Nightborne tattoos: - these are perfect, they are unique, and ares something that could have developed during the Nightwell era, needing to be sustained by the arcane, and amplify it for survival, conjuring food and armor/weapons, - the only changes to the night elves of Suramar are actually they themselves becoming nightborne… and their style of tattoos is brilliant reflection that you are a night elf/borne of Suramar.
If nightborne are ever to have a night elven appearance as an option, the tattoos would be one of the distinguishing factors that these come from Suramar out of the Nightwell era.
I never thought of night elves with normal eyes, I must say I love blood elves with normal eyes, feeels more natural, although i think glowy eyes for night elves help them feel less human, more magical - which I think was why they gottthem in the first place.
Says the red. If I only liked blood elves, I might share your view point. I’m satisfied with a lot concerning them. However a lot less so concerning night elves and the alliance.
And not enough people advocating for them, especially against any red opposition.
I wonder what the thought processes here were. Perhaps you can talk us through them, was it "Hmm, This looks like a thread title that will not interest me in the slightest, It is therefore my bounden duty to tell them to stop, using meme buzzwords?
Or “A Thread that is about an aspect of WoW that isn’t whinging about Blizzard or the Mage Tower? Disgraceful! They must be stopped!”?
Different teams. It ain’t the same people doing both. For example Ion, before he was promoted, was part of the team that worked on PvE dungeons and raids, which is why by his own admission he does not know the lore or look of the game, he was much more about Games mechanics.
You mean the one time they do it it’s been the only new content for 3 expansions? I’m quite releived they do it, this stuff should be coming like all the time, patches, expansions , etc. but they’ve never been the main content though, despite their huge popularity.
Honestly do you think the shadowlands customization updates made the game better? Or do you not infact realise those resources could be spend on developing classes, raids, new zones etc?
And Raids and Dungeons. And Warmode (Love it or hate it) and new zones, Island expeditions, Class Order halls as a concept (love em’ or hate 'em) thereby introducing or re-introducing Class based quest chains as opposed to ‘One size fits all’ Oddly Shadowlands has similar, but it is Covenant based quest chains.
I mean every expansions literally have had new content. They have never released an expansion that does -not- have new content.
As to hairstyles and colours, different team. Those customisations are not going to impinge upon the other aspects of the game at all.
How do you see that working? “Hey, Jeff, we need you to work on this Dungeon/raid” “Err, are you sure? You hired me to do this thing instead? That’s what I do, that literally is what this team does, we don’t do Raids, they don’t do customisation and graphics?”
“Yeah, we’re not bothered about that right now, what players really want is just loot and bragging rights”
“Bit shallow, isn’t it? What happened about the love and detail and attention to the lore and story?”
“Don’t worry, they’ll start complaining about the game having none of that, when they’ve hit the loot pinata enough times.”
“Or, we could do both, so that they don’t need to complain about it?”
“Do…Both?”
“Sure, you have two teams, one who do PvE raids and dungeon content, and then you have a team who deal purely with the cosmetic side of things, and making the game look good, presentation counts for a lot these days”
“My Gods, Jeff, you might be onto something there, why did we never think of this before?”
“We did, 17 years ago, which is why we have always had teams doing different things simultaneously”
“Oh, I wouldn’t know, i was on Bobby’s Yacht the last ten years…”
Getting the creative guys to work on Raids isn’t going to help matters at all.
It’s like a car has windows, right? So you need Glaziers in it’s construction. Now are you telling me you want them to get Glaziers involved in fine tuning the Engine of a Car?
Of course not. It’s different people, different teams. It’s not the Glazier’s fault if the engine designers do a cruddy job or vice versa.
Still a fact blizzard should give more facial options for all races the faces we have now is so dull same with hair style here’s hoping they outdone them self .
I really hope they fix the brick feet’s we have on all races.
That is true… so far only Humans and Nightborne male got decent facial option enhancments.
Not every race needs it… i don’t think blood elves or void elves nor draenei need it.
I know night elf males defintiely do, and the non-snarly new faces is no where near enough. Need some young and nice looking ones, wrinkle free but angular,
I mean, one you just don’t even wanna look at the, other is pretty cool. Such a shame. And yet night elves always look so much better in box art and cinematics, because they know the game model represntation iwill never be passed by marketing, too ugly.
Sow we know they can do them good looking… I remind you of Malfurion:
Illidan
Jace Darkweaver
Temple Priest in cinematic
Old models
Now observe some good artistic impressions from various artists
You can look badass, and attractive too, except in game if you’re a night elf male - it’s incredible, how the quality of alliance characters like Anduin and night elf males …jump to decent and even attractive in cinematics and box art media, but drop to ugly or undesirable in game.
Afterall those options and possiblities above…This is what we get for night elf males in game
Want to compare this to the quality of female characters?
I could post so much for them, in game characters and box art apperances…
Let me just say, if the in game characters could come off this beautiful, nighte lves and the alliancewould be very appealing to people.
You just don’t see this in game… this is not because they cannot do cool stuff for night elves… they can, in the lore, in the media work, it’s all cool, it’s in game… i t just can’t translate over tot he playable group… and therefore not very appealing.
