Overwolf & Blizzard Addon Policy

Not to defend overwolf but they have announced plans to strongly increase the payout to addon developers compared to twitch

Honestly the word on the street says otherwise, OW knows it has to keep authors happy or it will be DOA, and curse has been by far the best platform in its treatment of addon authors and also for the tools it providesā€¦ there is no alternative nothing comes closeā€¦

For the end user it may be a different story but for authors wellā€¦

EDIT: thats not to say there are those who wont tag along with overwolf, for sure there are but they are easily in the minority, one thing is certain though, this will divide the community.

They have, that is true. Iā€™d really like to see how that turns out though. If they actually will have that much of a payout, if any at all or if itā€™s just a bait to get as many mods onboard as possible. This company is just to greedy for itā€™s own good.

Sweet, they did me a favour, before the Twitch app, I use to update my addons once every 8-9 months and only because they stopped working.

When the Twitch app was introduced, I became OCD and was updating my addons daily and only because it was convenient yet more tedious.

Iā€™m cool with once every 9 months instead of daily.

But they obviously donā€™t know that it is good business to keep us users, if not happy , so at least content.
Without users no cash but they apparantly seem to miss that little thing.

if its the only way to get the bagnon addon (which it is at least if you want a remotely up to date version of it), people who rely on that addon will use curse, there is no other option, and i know for a fact the developer of that addon wont be interested in moving it to another platform.

The addon author even wrote on the wow interface page that people should go to twitch/curse for the addon.

Hang on, other addons updaters are leeching Curseforge data and Overwolf want to stop it after they take over?

That makes business sense, everyone is looking at it from the wrong side. Itā€™s not anyone elseā€™s data, it belongs to Overwolf and they are not going to be giving it away for free to their competitors. Besides there are ways to stop adware and bloatware.

Itā€™s like Blizzard allowing pirate realms.

Edit: Oh dear, bucking the social admonition trends is going to get me hidden isnā€™t it.

Use TBag? Itā€™s better anyway.

The data doesnt belong to Overwolf, they dont create any addons, they just will own the platform and control the bandwidth.

That was just the firstexample that came to mind, (but there are many more) i personally prefer adibags as well and use that.

Itā€™s a database of addons, they are not stopping people getting the addons, just stopping people getting THEIR Data about them and downloading them from Curseforge/Overwolf.

Wait hold up, does this mean twitch wonā€™t work anymore or whatā€™s the deal?

The new company are making their own version of twitch and overwolf are known for spying on people.

People complained like this when twitch took over from the old updater.

Iā€™m on board, maybe we can talk to the WowUp guys and collaborate? what do you think?

Yep Twitch Addon manager will stop working in the next week or so

Wowup is going that route, the biggest challenge though will be getting the lionshare of addon developers on board.

Yeah, I agree, I hope more will join.

If I want to install addons manually is the best site https://www.wowinterface.com? Is wowinterface safe? Iā€™ve honestly forgotten where I used to download them before, Itā€™s been years.

That is actually a good reminder! Thank you.

Well that sucks.
I canā€™t even remember when i started using it but it is a pretty convenient way to manage addons.
Ainā€™t this overwolf company gonna upset the twitch lads? I mean they are pretty big, canā€™t imagine they are happy about thisā€¦

They paid Twitch for the rights, So they wonā€™t upset twitch. Twitch are the ones who gave them it.
