Overwolf & Blizzard Addon Policy

safe yes, but it has alot more out of date addons because some addon developers have chosen to boycott it.

Thanks <3 I can’t remember the last time I downloaded an addon manually. Think it was way back in WOTLK.

I think the issue will be if certain widely used addons won’t be made available on other platforms, essentially forcing the user to install Overwolf even if they would be okay with manually downloading and updating everything themselves.

Now, having used Overwolf in the past, I can tell you that they had quite a few downright disgusting ads running. Not just scams thinly veiled as mobile games but straight-up hardcore pornographic content and things like sugar baby dating websites. They of course paid lip service to actively purging such ads but don’t think I ever saw less of them before I uninstalled.

I have to add, I was living in the eastern block of Europe when I last used Overwolf so I may have been shown more 18+ ads than western users (I noticed over the years that this is somewhat of a trend.) but regardless, I don’t think Blizzard wants to be associated with that.

Certain addons are considered more or less a must have for the game and if the only way players will be able to get them is by wading through filth and possibly getting malware in the process, it will generate some seriously bad publicity for not just Overwolf but Blizzard as well.

Funny how many people are actually defending OW at mmo-champ thread, especially that Clozer guy

I hope they don’t block the API, but if they do I’ll install manually using an ad blocker and incognito browsing

Nightmare!
been years since I manually downloaded addons :flushed:

Just cleared all my characters bank spaces ahead of pre patch, looks like today will be spent looking at making notes of the addons I have and looking at wowup or manual and getting them sorted ahead of pre patch

poop!

And your addons just magically ‘know’ they’re out of date? Nopes. It’s because other people do daily checks that you get that ingame out of date message because there’s no way for addons to know they’re out of date.

What happens here is that under the hood, without you seeing this, your local version gets compared to someone having the same addon and standing physically close to you. If that person has a newer version, your version knows it’s out of date and you get the out of date message.

Manual download it is then.

Shame, twitch was nice.

But you can probably update your addons by using other sites API.

The issue is majority of Mod Authors only post to CurseForge which is now owned by Overwolf.

So if a Mod Author hasn’t uploaded to a secondary Addon site, people can’t use a different sites API as the Addon won’t be there

Then mabe just throw that addon to trash and find another one? Why that mod author update his files only on CurseForge?

Soul decided to give Overwolf a whirl if anyone is interested:-

I’m still not going to use it myself but people should make up their own minds ofc

All those processes running. What does it need so many for

MMO Champ hosts some of the most toxic players this side of the sun, I used to go there to just read news updates but now I avoid it like the plague, corrupt moderation and absolutely horrible people post there, not all the people are horrible but there are some down right nasty ones.

List:

  • one checking addon updates
  • one for show adds
  • one for scanning all your drives
  • one to show that only scanning your addon folder
  • one for downloading screenshots of addons
  • one for downloading addons

For something that’s going to be used for about 30 seconds a week, is it really that bad? As long as you set it to shut down and not minimise then shouldn’t it be ok?

I mean the company has a reputation, reputations linger, if they are still warrented is up for debate
at the end of the day everyone is free to make their own decision if they want to support it or not, alternatives have always and will continue to always exist.

Dottie you don’t understand something. Most people are stupid. They just put something on and never turn it off.
For example ask how many people know that tv is all time on in stadby mode and all time taking power. People don’t know about that.
