I’m starting to feel weird…
Barely slept 3H, got bored out of my mind during a training in first aid. I’m feeling old… Long are the days where I could stay awake for 36H straight hours without exterior help (Coffee, Redbull) to the point where I reached that point where you start seeing things.

tbf that’s exactly what XIV races are. You have:
Human.
Human with cat ears.
Tall human with pointy ears.
Big and tall human with flat noses.
Tiny potato human.
Human with a bad skin condition insisting they’re dragon scales.
It’s not until the newest expansion we’re actually getting a distinctly in-human race in the form of Hrothgar. Viera too but they’re just humans with bunny ears. I know a bunch of people who were put off FFXIV for years because of how dull the race selection is. But then they revealed Hrothgar and now multiple Discords I’m in are all eyes glow red and are willing to play the game because of them.
In terms of visual distinction it’s mostly in their idle poses and proportions rather than actual features. Class animations are near identical ala Legion and onwards. Admittedly some lean better in to certain classes than others (EG: Big guys you’d probably be a tank, tiny guys probably a caster) visually but you see tons of people playing against the tropes, or you have tons of story NPCs also playing against the tropes, so really it’s up to the player to decide if it matters to them.
End result: Unless you pick an absolute extreme such as Roegydan or Lalafell then most classes will probably suit a character just fine.
Besides, while one character can be every class. It’s not very common for people to ‘main’ more than one class during the rolling of new content (At most people tend to main a role: Tank, healer, melee, ranged or magical DPS), people tend to only dabble in alt classes seriously during content lulls or if they are considering a change. And if the class they like doesn’t look great on their current race, a race change is like £3 as opposed to £20. It’s not uncommon to see people race hop several times for funsies.
Hell I get two free race change potions on every character I make because of a subscriber veteran reward and a collector’s edition I bought way back. My only gripe is they don’t come with a name change, but then I’m a stickler for lore friendly names and all even on non-RP realms.
Eh, you might as well say that LOTRO’s race options are “human”, “lithe human with pointy ears”, “short, stout human with a beard” and “even shorter chubby human”.

Does FFXIV have the sheer amount of LORE to back those up that LOTRO has, though?
(Also haven’t played FFXIV, seriously curious if there’s any lore to it, because I don’t know anything about the game.)
i mean, its completely story driven.
i have often said that it forgets its an MMO and not a pure FF game.

What the other guy said. LOTRO races have an absolute metric ton of lore to back them up. Like, dear god the Tolein lore.
Even then, I honestly don’t find human but X races interesting in general. I played hobbits in LOTRO, but I find them more endearing whereas small races in other MMOs tend to irritate me more than entertain me. But that was my limit.
The other thing is in LOTRO, humans but X are pretty much the only feasible playable races. Whereasin XIV for years we’ve had evidence of more plausible inhuman races but never got any. Presumably because unlike WoW the devs don’t just stretch everything to fit anything that isn’t a male human. (Hell they said that at launch, Hrothgar won’t even have most head items be visible on them until a later patch).
There’s a decent amount to be fair, it’s just not really super highlighted unless you clear all the side quests (Which aren’t necessary to level these days) or buy the lore compediums.
