And cause of the Hundred year war, France doesn’t have English on the Schedule of things to be taught in regular School? 
1 out of 5 french people speaks english. And even then, it’s shaky english unless you live in highly touristic cities like Paris, Marseille or the Azure cost.
We’re obnoxious people and this time, it really is shameful.
I fail to see the logical link you’re making between those two things. Having a few lessons of one language (not necessarily english btw; italian, spanish and german are options as well) doesn’t make people fluent in any language anyway.

I too had German for five or six years, diden’t learn a damn thing. it was merely a jab at the Obnoxious (for the British) and dreadfully persistent French, they got a long history of it.
Also French schools poorly teaches any language.
The problem is, there’s no incentive for kids at school to learn another language… And really, school just gave me the basics of english language.
I then spent 2 whole years watching my favourite cartoons and American shows with french subtitles, passively learning with a Wordreference page opened on the side.
It doesn’t help that France translates everything whereas scandinavian countries have English as a good and solid second language there.
I’M JUST SAYIN’… They could learn french instead. ;D

Honestly, I think it’s a good thing that all is translated, or at least with subtitles. Yeah, the english teaching isn’t great (like you, all I know I learned by myself. Books personnally, I really wanted to know the ending of the Wheel of Time) but there’s a real care to protect the language. Now, if that could be extanded to more energy in preserving our others national languages like Breizh, that would be nice.

The teacher that was supposed to teach my entire class German, had taught classes before us the very same; Nothing… but due to the lack of teachers capable of teaching the language in that district they had to rely on that old Geezer, my sisters too had him and they expierenced the very same.

Honestly I think the best way to teach boys english… Using the platforms they like and switch it into english. Your kid is more likely to be willing to learn english words upon fortnite rather than listening to his boring 62 years old English teacher who’s set in his old ways.
For girls… Use American shows like Grey’s anatomy and such.
I think language teaching incredibly likes interactivity and lively lessons. A single school trip to the cheapest inn in Barcelone or London isn’t enough of an incentive to bust your rear to learn a language (And that is assuming said kid can affor it. Never went to any english country, yet I ended up being better at it than everyone who ever been to the UK or America in my school years.).

Probably something on my end.
It was more the fact its called “roast beef tongue” and not just “roast tongue” (because we roast more than just beef) or “banners and mash tongue” which for a while in the 90s seemed to be the go-to stereotype for us.
EDIT: maybe I’m just biased because out of all the roasted meats, I just dislike beef.
