Where have I stated that slurs are acceptable? I have done no such thing. In fact, I’ve repeatedly asked if those responsible have been reported. I did, however, take issue with the claim that slurs aimed at a fictional character are as bad as those aimed at a real person.
I believe claiming as much significantly cheapens the effect of slurs aimed at real people.
Is exactly what I am saying. And if you do feel offended by it then you have every right to be since it’s pretty bad if thrown at you.
“I guess” has no place in your sentence. Either you know or you shut up about it. Your interpretations hold absolutely zero value “amigo”, get that in your brain.
I don’t recall ever saying ‘as bad’.
I was pretty clear why it is a problem - because, for the third time, how people interact with fictional characters usually influences how they interact with real people and also real people do usually hear you when you use slurs, even if your target is fictional.
Couldn’t disagree more.
Having met several players over the years during meetups that have disagreed with me / seen how I act out in the forums or even in the game, I have only ever been told that I turned out to be much nicer / kinder in person than I come across- And I have found this to be the case myself too, when I’ve met people I haven’t always agreed with.
are you
are you saying you are fictional
you keep parroting + upvoting zahan, who has made it no secret that he thinks slurs are 100% ok and people should just get over it. (wildly trying to go ‘i-its not appropriate to discuss on the forums!’ to try and dodge out of the discussion wasn’t subtle either)
is that the same amount of value you attach to women when interacting with one that you dislike
No I’m saying that people (myself included) who act in certain way/manner toward fictional characters doesn’t translate to real life people interactions, I’ve found.
Though since you have not met me, maybe I am an internet sprite???
Alright, so…
Again, were the players who made these slurs actually reported or not?
I also don’t agree that how people act on a forum or in-game is necessarily reflective of how they act elsewhere. It’s true in some cases, but not all. Some of the players who present themselves as friendly and well-meaning, for instance, have turned out to be the most spiteful and manipulative individuals that I’ve ever encountered.
Equally, some of the more hot-heated individuals I’ve met have turned out to be genuinely kind and a shoulder to lean upon in terms of strife.
Underneath that lies a bigger issue: people not being able to see a difference between IC and OOC. Who also take insult when you insult their character on an IC basis or disagree with them.
I give this bait a 1 out of 10. Pretty obvious and bad bro.
Wonder if folks would be okay with rampant use of the n-word when Geya’rah inevitably gets handed the bad guy stick?
I mean asside from the lack of the word in setting, it’s just towards a fictional character right?
Unironically orcs apparently hate being called “Greenskins”. I’m unsure if this was mentioned in lord of the clans but I summon Telaryn the Fyne n2 to confirm this.
Well it’s a mutation caused by the lowest point their race has hit right?
That is a fair point and good that I understand you. Though I personally think that guys could also find it offensive simply because they dissaprove of it, which is fine, according to me.
To touch on this a little, I do think everyone of us can come across a bit harsher in our believes/words on text/forums. I am alot less fiesty in person than I appear here.
Truth is, most people hate conflict and are agreeable by nature (even men, who are more disagreeable than women for instance on average), and they rather smile and smalltalk away rather than break up social contract and start disagreeing with you.
Everybody wears masks in every interaction- Online, parents, your s/o, best friend, strangers, boss, co-workers, etc.
Vaxir for example (who I see is joining the convo) turned out to be just a decent/kind and a nice person when I met her IRL, even when we had not always agreed on the forums.
Usually? Naw. Rarely? Yes. There’s a lot of icand ooc mixing here.
My prediction would be that a lot of people would not be ok with it. Just like this situation right here. Personally wouldn’t care much. Though others of my heritage see that very much different. From “It’s just a word” to throwing punches if that is said to them face to face.
Sure depends on the context too. Though somehow I believe this is a society related issue too. Where in your country (or place, whatever) it’s very offensive, in other countries or parts it’s not that bad or funny.
Ah, you are not familiar with the very common phenomenon of actors (usually women because of course it would be) getting verbal abuse or worse in reaction to things characters they portray have done. That would explain a great deal.
It’s not a big stretch to assume that if you are comfortable using slurs against a group in one context that you will also be comfortable using them in other contexts. It’s not always true, but one generally implies the other.
Again, were the players who made these slurs actually reported or not?
I was not present for the event, so cannot report them directly. If I were, I would have, yes.
You seem uncomfortable with or dismissive of the idea of discussing the culture that would allow someone to think that that kind of language was acceptable.
Underneath that lies a bigger issue: people not being able to see a difference between IC and OOC. Who also take insult when you insult their character on an IC basis or disagree with them.
My characters often have opinions or views that I personally disagree with - religious characters when I am not religious, for example, or supporting Sylvanas when I obviously do not condone genocide.
However, I would not roleplay a character who uses slurs - particularly not the ones in question here which are commonly used IRL - because I am aware that real people do read what I write and it costs £0.00 to not be a jerk.
Seeing certain patterns of social interaction, both positive and negative, used in fiction helps subconsciously normalize them when used in real life. They appear less strange, less unusual. This makes people more accepting of them if they’re often exposed to the media where they’re portrayed.
Not really because I don’t really care for the victimization of either of the sexes- Women or men.
Well I mean, what arbitrary % would you put up for it? 10%? 40%? 60%?
