Pet peeves: The return (Part 1)

Currently playing Settra campaign and loving it. Also did some research on who he is and what he is about and also loving it. Tomb Kings are a really cool faction, in fact a lot of the factions that I previously overlooked are.

Warhammer lore seems pretty interesting tbh. It’s very easy to see the obvious inspirations Blizzard took from their universe when they made Warcraft.

I’m not sure how true it is, but I’m sure it was a rumour or common knowledge some years ago that Blizzard had originally approached GW to make a Warhammer game before they were a big deal but were refused, and it instead ended up being Warcraft: Orcs and Humans.

There’s an Enderman in my survival world who is just trolling me.

he teleported into my house, out again, in again, underground. I only know he’s there because I can hear him and see the purple particals. I haven’t actually seen him though.

I will mention that Settra has a weird second life (ha, fitting) in fandom because of memes and people giving too many TLDR summaries of his character.

In the actual WHF he was a pretty terrible ruler whose initial conquests came down to being more advanced than everyone else, before spending most of his undeath trying (and failing) to get the other Tomb Kings to obey him, or trying (and failing) to perma-slap Arkhan/Nagash around, then gathering his combined might to slap some marauders around before the End Times came.

(khalida best tomb queen don’t @ me)

I got into it properly about a year ago and honestly, it’s just… Refreshing that you can keep reading for a while because someone sat down to give each Dwarf city a central THING, whether it be goldsmithing, engineering, runesmithing, mercantilism, underway crossroads profiteers, with powerful local guilds, plus they all have views on eachother and the mountains they came from. Compare that to WoW where we have about three Dwarf cities and all of them aren’t really characterised much out of their requisite hat of “normal dwarf, sky dwarf, evil dwarf”, and most of the stuff we have requires you to trawl through quest text.

Even Age of Sigmar, which has been around for maybe four years, has done a lot more to characterise the Kharadons or Fyreslayers than WoW has in nearly two decades.

I think this was a rumour, but that’s how the story goes. Apparently they had disagreements over how much creative liberty Blizzard would have with the setting.

10000% - for all the grief people give it, Age of Sigmar does some really fun worldbuilding and stage-setting, albeit somewhat differently, mostly at a larger, mroe mythic scale while allowing you to fill on your own stories for ‘your dudes’ that you’re painting and fitting them into the narrative really well - a bit different from the usual video gaming and book storytelling, but it works really well for tabletop wargames and RPGs imo

Warhammer Fantasy in general just has the huge benefit of the tabletop rpg books really, really fleshing things out a lot (and it’s happening with new releases, still!)

Neferata best vampire btw, smelly von Carsteins OUT

I think it’s the big difference between tabletop design and game design - the former is primarily a storytelling outlet with a game attached to let you experience it on your own terms. The latter, sadly often, is driven by mechanics first and the story writers are put in at the last minute to plaster the bare frame with whatever story they can cram together that makes everything fit.

That’s why we have inconsistent stories between expansions or even patches in some cases.

Tbh, it’s not as if something like Warhammer doesn’t have a ton of retcons and the likes for example - but things definitely feel a lot more fleshed out and consistent within the given of the relevant army book for example.

Also god, I’ve got so many WFRP adventures I want to run…

Updates to lore and changes like that are good - I unironically defend the ‘continuity’ quote. It’s mostly in the depth of things, where WoW’s stuff is pretty thin on the ground because there’s maybe one book written every 1000 years

Even if I give the cow elves grief, deciding to put Elves in the mountains and sea and put dwarves in the sky was a good call and genuinely led to some interesting worldbuilding and aesthetics. Kharadons still look and feel like Dwarves despite their surroundings being totally at odds with the expected aesthetic.

I admire the confidence with which you have chosen to be completely incorrect, Vlad best

The continuity quote wouldn’t be so laughable if they actually changed continuity for good reason. From another company it might be pretty reasonable. From Blizzard? ehhhhhh. It doesn’t feel like them flip flopping on stuff is throwing off the shackles of continuity, it’s the left hand not knowing or caring what the right is doing.

This is a fair comment - I should clarify that the sentiment behind the quote is what I defend, not its execution in Blizzard stories.

I wouldn’t have made Starshade’s Law of Retcons if I did

This is, unfortunately, true. D&D 5e basically alternates between gameplay-centered sourcebooks (Xanathar, Tasha) and lore-centered ones (Volo, Mordenkainen). The latter contain good insight into races and cultures in official settings. Official adventures are also a source of rich lore on the locations where the adventure takes place, on a level that WoW can only dream of. (Seriously, go read Volo’s Waterdeep Enchiridion that’s part of the Waterdeep: Dragon Heist adventure. Don’t you wish Stormwind or Orgrimmar was described in that level of detail?)

All of this information is, of course, given because DMs genuinely need it. Even if you DM a published module, you’ll need the background information to understand who the NPCs are, what drives them, and how to make the players care about the setting and the story.

When I started a Warcraft 5e campaign after getting some experience with running published Forgotten Realms campaigns, I immediately hit the obstacle that there are just way too many blanks in Warcraft lore, compared to Forgotten Realms. I ended up writing my own introductory document that headcanoned away some gaps in official lore (like how transportation works and what state Kalimdor and Alliance-Horde relations are), just so the campaign could have a semi-coherent setting.

The Roomineth Realm-o lords are pretty cool tbh, really like the take on Elves - it’s not an army I’m too interested in collecting myself (I say, staring at a box of their archers all assembled in front of me) but it’s great to see

Vlad doesn’t even fill his hometurf with lots of cool and exotic cats

Genuine peeve; a combination of Total War Warhammer 2 and eBay browsing is making me so, so sad I didn’t snag certain Bretonnian, Empire, Orc- just every type of miniature back in the day :frowning:

I forgot how well done the sculpts for Louen Leoncour and the Fay Enchantress were, and even the likes of the generic Empire units and especially the special characters they had closer towards the End Times. Most of them are all OOP now, sadly.
My one candle of hope is that The Old World returns with current model quality and as much aplomb (and subtlety) as Tchaikovsky’s cannons :joy:

Lately I’ve barely had any energy to log into the game at all, it’s just so tiresome. Perhaps I’m getting old.

I remember seeing an art piece of an elf whose ears looked like those of a donkey. That was odd.

Rest assured, it’s not just you. I’ve not logged into the game either except for raiding ( apart from yesterday cause I forgot we had one) since a week or so. Maybe it’s just the “New expansion rush” wearing off on me, and maybe it’s the same for you.

I’m sorely tempted to get into WHFRP, but at the same time have no idea where to start
