I’m learning German right now actually and the genders for all the nouns is the part that screws me the most. That and to a lesser extent all the forms of pronouns and conjugations. Likely less of a German specific problem and just growing pains of learning a new language.
Oh yeah I’m more thinking about grammar, such as noun cases. Needing to remember a set of prepositions in order to know which form of “the” you should use is bonkers.
At least it’s consistent. English does the same thing but it’s a dice roll if it’s written as one word or not. Sunglasses, sun glasses, who knows? Only autocorrect.

Just in case: Try to force your brain to see the noun gender as a set part of the noun.
So “tree” isn’t “Baum” (which for some reason is male and takes “der”). It’s: “tree” - “der Baum”.

As a native speaker it’s a build in feature that doesn’t really need much thought or remembering outside from some very, very rare cases.
Yeah, heard that before and it was moderately helpful, but given that my native language doesn’t have articles at all and gender 9 times out of 10 is determined by the ending, it’s still a rough transition.

I believe in you! German has a slightly steeper difficulty at the start but once you got a basic framework down it can get pretty easy. (Just don’t look at modal particles.)

Look I didn’t insist that English didn’t have that too. German seems to have more of them and doesn’t seem to have a cap on how many words it is considered reasonable to graft onto eachother.
