Pet peeves: The return (Part 5)

Becoming her first true children, taking on the noble titanic aspect.

They certainly do seem to be precious prizes every godlike force wants to claim.

My tongue was firmly in my cheek for that one

Are we inventing a new level of Warcraft canon?

Is this like the Rodenberry Canon of Star Trek, where some Trekkies refuse to accept anything that Gene Rodenberry didn’t have a hand in as “true canon?”

Is “Metzen Canon” now a thing, where nothing is canon unless it’s explicitly canonised by the big man Metz himself?

God if only that were reality, alas it isn’t and we have to take Danuser talking about Cosmic Rope Theory and mindcontrolling fluoride in the water seriously.

So far we’re 3-for-3 on consecutive disaster xpacs that have torn down WoW’s identity with Metzen’s absence. He returns and we get Season of Discovery which he is narratively involved in and has been nothing but fantastic thus far and feels like Warcraft.

I’d gladly confine Metzen to the garbage heap if I had my way. Not because (in my opinion) he’s really no better than what followed him, but because I don’t believe for one second he was ignorant to what was going on at the company/studio with all its gross practices. Even if he wasn’t personally involved he did nothing noteworthy to stop it.

'Twas a grand, glorious dream etc. etc.

In truth, The Hero is sitting in a chair drooling to this day, their mind broken irreversibly by the combined trauma of Wrathion having them endure N’zoth’s madness and Magni using them as an anchor to channel the entire worldsoul power through the poor sod’s body.

All things that have followed is a funny dream, the three year timeskip actually being a prolonged seizure as our dear Champyun’s perceptions warp and twist in their continuous and degenerative brain trauma.

The weekly vault reward is really the spoonful of applesauce keeping them going.

I could go on but it’s frankly depressing.

Somehow, Zovaal returned.

Absolutely not wishing for it.

I’m a bit of a centrist when it comes to Metzen. I acknowledge that a lot of Warcraft’s DNA comes from him but at the same time, he’s also responsible for some of the worst mistakes and lore additions in Warcraft’s history, in my opinion, some of which are worse than a lot of the controversial stuff in Dragonflight, such as Elemental Bonds and the origins of the Eredar fiasco.

Also a bit of a centrist when it comes to Dragonflight, I guess, since I accept that it has a lot of problems, but I do think it has produced a lot of good Warcraft quests and stories, many of which are a lot better than stuff that has come out of the Metzen era.

So I don’t see him as a messiah who will rescue Warcraft from the doldrums of despair, since I honestly don’t think Dragonflight was that bad, but I am interested in seeing what direction War Within will go in.

Some awkward storylines aside and a meandering story, it does the job better than shadowlands and doesn’t stretch itself thin by trying to cram several expansions into one á la BfA.

Think this is doing some lifting in terms of narrative. Having flavourless goop is great after a starter of :poop: with sugar sprinkled on top.

Personally I think a lot more good than bad came out of Dragonflight. The worst I can say about it is that the main story was kind of bland, but otherwise it’s easily in my top three expansions along with Wrath and MoP.

As for Metzen, yours is a good balanced view, and I welcome it. I think Metzen is good at pitching high-level ideas, but is better off leaving small-scale details to others, and he needs others to keep his runaway imagination in check.

I think most people are probably just happy that someone who has a proven track record to give a damn about Warcraft as a setting for others and not their own egomaniacal storytelling is calling shots in the writers room again. Even at its most Thrall-centric I don’t think many people’s issue with the story was that it didn’t feel like Warcraft.

So one trip to the sorcerers sundries and the sorcerous vault and Gale is pretty much a wizardchad now

I wonder if other companions get similar themeatic ‘powerups’ as it were (I know Wyll gets a sick rapier and Shadowheart… was I supposed to get a legendary weapon for completing her big choice? I got a goody two shoes weapon but its rare/blue) :frowning:

I’ll be awake until I’m not haha.

Most companions get a tune up - Shadowheart’s come from the gauntlet of Shar in the form of her dark justiciar armour.

It gets souped up if you make a particular choice but even the base version is strong enough to carry her through act 3. Base spear is strong but will not beat out the blood of lathander

100% agree, and the thing is as well, that…either option is tremendously bad. If he did not know at all, then it showcases that he absolutely had next to zero presence in the company, to the point that any of his work can be heavily scrutinized and put into question, as can his complete lack of leadership in that case.

Or the more likely, he was fully aware but did not step in. Either out of apathy/lack of care or because of approving of it.

With what happened under him/when he was present, it was a situation in which no matter his knowledge or lack of, or involvement or lack if, it will paint a really bad image of him as a person. It’s just that one part is slightly worse. And it’s the one that is more likely.

Somerton released an apology video. Its about as expected and quite a bit manipulative.

  • The video starts with him crying and opens with that he’s tried to hurt himself because of what happened and he’s been in hospital. It continues talking about how upset he’s been, his friends left him and he risks being homeless.

  • He apologises for accidental plagiarism. None of it was intentional, it just happened. Things “slipped in”.

  • Simultaneously he says he is not misogynistic, those comments were plagiarised and not his own.

  • He thanks hbomb for setting up a fund for those he stole from.

  • He wants to reupload all videos again but send the revenue to hbomb to add to the fund. He also wishes to return with new videos “properly cited” and become the face of “proper source citing” on youtube. He wants to reactivate his patreon.

  • He claims he did cite sources, but not enough and is sorry for doing it wrong.

  • Repeats talking about his emotions and how hurt he is by losing everyones trust. Cries more.

  • Never brings up anything else, including his own harassment of others who tried to expose him previously or who asked to be credited.
