I bought Inquisition on launch. It was my first ever game of this genre and scale (I was a baby gamer with a bad PC) and I was entirely immersed, played every day and loved it so much. 10 years later, I still haven’t seen how it ends because it ominously warned me I “might” miss out on “some” content if I move past a certain point. I’m literally one mission away from the ending of the game, still chipping away at side quests and achievements a couple times a year.
It also seems a bit counter intuitive of a game anyway. Unless I am speedrunning, why would I want to experience less of what the game has?

It gets better after the Hinterlands, but Hinterlands SUCKS as a beginner/early game zone.

At least they have acknowledged that particular feedback with regards to Hinterlands.
Hopefully a more focused experience makes for a better game, time will tell.

I get the idea of wanting a zone you can come back to several times. But in a game with set level scaling and difficulty, having the starting zone be level 1-13 while also openly encouraging people to explore freely like it was a Bethesda game, then…
It’s a bad idea.
The problem is that the game doesn’t really indicate that you should be revisiting it. The natural instinct is to just try and complete the whole zone in one go which is truly awful.
Notably this is because this is what people were used to from previous Bioware games, and also other open world RPGs in general.
When you arrive in Orzamaar. You do Orzamaar in it’s entirety and then move onto the next.
Exactly, because that’s also how Origins and 2 played outside of specific cases.
If you ever needed to come back to a zone, those games would flat out tell you. And then they would also load a new instance of the zone with changed enemies that matched the current situation.
Otherwise, it was always the case that you should 100% it and move on.

And then only once you’re past Haven should you really free explore.
Should I play Origins or DA2 next? I tried DA2 briefly and was kind of annoyed by the combat. I don’t know which game people prefer more both in terms of combat or story and I’d love to get back into it.
also true in world of warcraft because it should be a dwarf zone but instead i keep finding trolls and that is just not okay
Origins no question. Dragon Age 2 is a fantastic story but the gameplay isn’t great.
Origins has a great story and the origin system is very cool. It plays like a classic CRPG.

More seriously, there were a few things that went into Andromeda sucking - its terribly buggy launch definitely didn’t help.
The how long to beat stuff for DA games was posted above - Andromeda’s main story clocks in at 18 hours (compared to ME1: 18, ME2: 24-25, and ME3: 24-25) but its completionist time is ~100, twice that of any of the other games. Its open world stuff was huge, but also mostly kinda…dull. A lot of obligatory collectathons. The villains were also pretty snoozy. There’s a whole lotta stuff to do, but none of it ever really feels that gripping or engaging. Very check box-y.
The idea of hotswapping character class/builds mid-fight is vaguely interesting but I never felt the actual need to do so. Being capped at 3 abilities at a time meant it was harder for them to have ‘big nukes’ on long cooldowns.
Also they made Natalie Dorner your asari ship doctor but then made her unromanceable, like what the hell is that?
DA2’s gameplay would be improved drastically if they simply deleted every monster closet, thereby shaving down the vast majority of encounters.
I will note, however, that for all the defences of Origin’s gameplay, it is the only DA game that has not one but two extremely popular “skip dungeon” mods.

With Dragon Age 2 you have to remember that it was incredibly rushed for production.
Half of the game is blatantly unfinished, and it’s infamous for the dreaded “cave” (Basically every instance you enter will be the same cave. Identical cave).
It has some excellent characters and story writing despite its issues (Act 2 is HAUNTING).
It also had an interesting companion system in that you don’t earn approval. You earn rivalry or friendship.
Gameplay is pretty awful. Every encounter follows the same formula: 2-3 big guys, 10 small guys. Then when they are defeated, a second wave spawns behind you.
