This means that you don’t need to enter mythic+ or normal / heroic raid to get 437 ilvl gear this patch. You can do it purely by looting champion track items from events in the open world and taking coins from each weekly vault that you get slots in by doing LFR. You could also use 3 wyrm crests to make the material needed to upgrade crafted items to 437 if you’ve run out of champion track items.
Some math.
Week 1: 1 Crest for 3 bosses (1)
Week 2: 1 Crest for 3 bosses (2)
Week 3: 2 Crests for 5 bosses (4)
Week 4: 2 Crests for 5 bosses (6)
Weeks 5 onwards: 3 Crests for 7 bosses (9, 12, 15…)
This means you’re getting the equivalent of a 434 item a week without stepping into a self formed raid or mythic+ dungeon, as well as obviously the option to use crests to get each of those items to 437.
Is this particularly fun? Depends if you like LFR
Does it have a catch up? No sadly it doesn’t
Does this feel convoluted and a little insulting? Potentially
Whether it’s designed that way isn’t really the point. This is making those players who likely don’t know / would miss out on this aware that it’s a thing.
And there are also people who have no desire at all to enter player made group content (M+, Normal raids, Heroic Raids) and instead prefer to play solo content at their own pace or queued content like LFR and Timewalking. Whether or not it’s intended, this is a source of wyrm crests for those players, one I’d guess many of them didn’t even know they had access to.
I genuinely have no idea what you’re on about. This isn’t a “I want higher ilvl gear for doing lower content” post. It’s making players who did not know they even had access to wyrm crests at the level of content they enjoy aware that they do, and can use them for upgrades.
That it’s not a system designed with World Content players in mind, and how it works for players that do do queued content. So it shouldn’t feel insulting for world content players, because it’s not designed for them.
It’s a good thing that you have worked out a way to get some upgraded gear. It does seem like a very long work around for it though.
But Blizzard have to be careful with how easy it is to get gear upto this level of gear in Outside world content, because otherwise it is seen as a requirement/chore for queued content players to have to complete every week.
I tend to agree with this assessment, but I do also think it’s reasonable to be disgruntled that this is the avenue you have to go down to achieve this. Could have just had 2-3 wyrm crests a week from the weekly world event zones (And had them count towards your weekly cap so players who did higher content didn’t feel compelled to do it too) and nobody would have batted an eye, but it achieves the same result.
Again, it will just been seen as a weekly chore. Wyrm crests are already hard enough to obtain. We need to run content lower than we are playing to obtain them at the moment. And that really feels like a waste of time.
For example I’m running 16-20 keys for progression at the moment where I get Aspect Crests. But if I want to upgrade my gear, I need to run multiple 11-15 keys.
But we need them to continue to upgrade our gear.
I don’t see an issue with them putting some Wyrm Crests in World Quest rewards. But they also need to make them easier to obtain for everyone else, so it doesn’t feel like a chore.
Bliz have already said this will be fixed going into the next iteration, and acknowledged it as a problem this time around along with the bag space issue.
Was a really pleasent surprise for me after looting my first vault. I like LFR and upgrading my gear even above 424 is really a nice bonus. Is it possible to obtain the heroic transmog this way?
Once the catalyst opens yes, items that are 428 or higher swap appearance to heroic.
Items will need to be champion track though to actually go beyond 424, so nothing from LFR will work.
If you want to get LFR, Normal, and Heroic item appearances for xmog reasons your best bet is to use crests / flightstones on whatever you want now, then when the catalyst opens get a 1/8 champion track item in the slot you want to catalyze, catalyze that, and upgrade it with flightstones instead of just upgrading the 437 item you already have. This way you’ll get the LFR, Normal, and Heroic tier appearances instead of just the heroic one.
Thank you ellipsis for letting people know this. I stumbled upon this vendor and to my surprise saw i could get wyrm crests even tho it might take awhile, im pretty sure many people dont know this, I wouldnt have if i hadnt randomly checked that vendor
