TLDR: Bored Shadow Priest makes Evoker alt and tries to get it as high ilvl as he can without doing player made raids or mythic dungeons. Documents progress.
What are you doing?: Seeing how geared I can get an evoker without doing content that requires a player made group.
Is this a challenge or something?: No, more of a case study. There’s no specific goal, despite the title, it’s just about documenting the process.
Are there any other rules?: No, but things like the flightstone discount provided by my main are things I’m taking into consideration when I collect my thoughts for these posts.
How are you going to get any 437 items at all?: Wyrm crests can be purchased for the cost of 2 great vault coins each. This means a 3 slot vault from LFR yields enough crests to upgrade a crafted item to 437. I can also use the crests later to upgrade champion track items which can be catalyzed into tier.
Why are you doing this?: To spread awareness of the fact playing this way is possible, and showing a path to gearing that’s beyond what’s typically been available for those that for one reason or another don’t do content beyond the queue system.
This week was what I predict to be the slowest week for progress in the saga, it mostly consisted of accumulating resources, as well as spending the weekly drake crests I could get from world content. I have a lot of upgrades and potential options in my bag but I’ve decided to hold on to my flightstones from now on until I’m close to cap, in order to better approximate having to do this without the flighstone discount.
Looted a pair of 415 Champion Gloves from the Researchers Under Fire event. These will be converted into tier gloves using the catalyst at some point.
Looted a 415 Cloak from the 5 Heroic Dungeons event.
Finished both wings of LFR for a total of 6 bosses and 2 Great Vault Slots.
Upgraded my tier Gloves and tier Legs from LFR to ivll 424.
Looted a 402 Ring from the digging event.
Acquired 2 Wyrm crests from my vault on the 30th last month
Caught up to 3 sparks of Shadowflame, ready for crafting.
Earned roughly another 1200 flightstones, saving 1000.
Observations
The flighstone discount has had a large impact on my ability to upgrade items from quest rewards early on. As more flightstone upgrades aren’t explicitly necessary I will try to hold off on them unless it’s an item I plan to keep for BIS.
The plan of crafting two items next week has been put on hold due to the fact LFR Sarkareth has not released. This is a great shame but I will still have enough Wyrm crests to upgrade and make a 437 staff tomorrow morning.
The Niffen Renown Track offers a pair of 415 Champion Boots for 14 renown, these will be great as it’s one less slot I need to RNG items for from HC boxes. This is also why I’m hoarding all my rep items.
Overall it’s a slow week but this was to be expected. It’s unfortunate I won’t get the free enchanted crest from killing LFR Sarkareth next week but there will still be enough wing bosses to get access to a 3rd vault slot, as well as the potential of a Neltharion trinket upgradable to 437. Just have to get a little bit lucky.
what is it 15 items in total? 424 > 437 = 4 Crests per item
15 items x 4 = 60 Crests needed , so you should be done in about 30 weeks time.
at which point, you are probably better purely doing LRF, converting the crests to craft 437 in every slot
3 crests per craft - 15 pieces x3 = 45 crests/2 = 23 weeks odd ( which i lied, cuz you would still need the sparks wouldnt you, so 2x a least as we only get half a week)
There’s no explicit goal here, I just want to see how the process is / bring awareness to the fact its even an option for players who don’t do queued content.
its an option, but after the first 10 minutes its definitely not a fun/viable playstyle.
i mean if you actively played wow and didnt wana do any Group content, after reaching about the lv408 mark, you become very restricted in things you can do to upgrade your gear, if you were only playing to do so, your play time would be like 2 hours a week or something silly.
suitable for the super super casual, but dull for the average wow player and a LOT more time gated than doing group content.
They could add in a currency from doing WQs or something, that could be converted to Drake/Wyrm, even if it was stuff that only became available after certain reknown levels or something, where an Open world player would have much higher Rep in general than people who live in M+
It’s more that people who enjoy world content exclusively and usually cap out at 424 have an avenue to get some of their items to 437. This is definitely taking it to an extreme just to see how feasible it is, but still it’s a lot better than those players have been able to acquire in the past.
and wy do you assume its not fun for people who cba with pugging and doing organized content.
someone who solely farms old content for transmog / do pet battles etc and feels exactly 0 need to do m+ or normal / hc raids can get to 437 eventually .
i mean, you comment literally helps me explain my point.
and wy do you assume its not fun for people who cba with pugging and doing organized content.
if they CBA to do that, then they probably dont enjoy doing the LFR each week just to get the crests.
im sure if they had the option of just doing their World content, to trade in a currency for the Drake/Wyrm crests, they would probably be more than happy with that option to get them up to ilvl 437
and being a higher level means they can solo more old content easier. so not sure why you are barking at me.
Honestly this. The fact its possible at all through convoluted means kinda dispels the previous argument of “ilvl and content difficulty should correlate” that many use to justify a lack of gear progression in the open world.
While I do agree to an extent with that view, I also think gradual gear progression should be a core part of any player’s RPG experience and it wouldn’t hurt at all to put a wyrm crest on each of the 3 weekly world events (Researchers, Fyrakk, World Boss) instead of this convoluted vault method.
