This is Orgrimmar, at peak RP hours on a Friday night.

Where is everyone.

Will they come back?

I am sure they were here.

I feel the end is drawing near,
would time be so kind to slow?
You are everything
to me, my dear -
you are all I really know.

But as I sit and wait and fear
and watch the hours go -

Everything that happened here,
happened long ago.

Listen I know my RP has historically been less than stellar on occasion but totally clearing out Orgrimmar with my presence is a new one for me - please come back people, it’s not 2016 anymore I know what I’m doing now I swear

Sadly, the reason there’s no-one rping is because Warcraft is dead, and the game is hemorrhaging roleplayers.

It’s not exactly a perfect analogy, but those brave souls who continue to be dedicated to the game are somewhat like microbes languishing over a decaying corpse, until eventually all has rotted away and even they ultimately vanish.

Stepping back, looking at the direction of game development and whats happening in the company, to expect anything other than things getting worse is beyond a fool’s hope.

Apologies for this rather morose comment, but I’m feeling quite melancholy over this whole thing. The worse thing is that it’s most likely true.

I guess we could have seen this coming in BfA (not the Blizzard lawsuit stuff and all the other incidents that followed after) but the state of the game and lore? Yeah… were we fools to hope?

BfA ended 3 major plot lines that could have easily been quality expansions each with its own theme and story. That’s 5 to 6 years of content.

  • The H/A war with Kul Tiras and Zandalar.
  • Nazjatar and Queen Azshara, with robot Gnomes and Mechagon as a big content patch.
  • N’Zoth and Ny’alotha (sadly we all know how that went. 10 years of Ny’alotha foreshadowing put into the trashcan in one lousy patch and a mediocre raid)

Instead we have… this.

We’re already ignoring SL narrative until all the leaders stay out there. We still have quite a population in Stormwind or Dalaran. It’s not what it once was, but it’s far from over. As of the lawsuit, it can be a sign of improvements as well. After all, the courts still haven’t made their sentence, so it might still end well.

If it were, it already would’ve. But alas.

There will always be players in Wow. Whether they’re Whales, RPers or people who can’t get over the sunk cost fallacy.

I’m just disillusioned with WoW overall. Lawsuit aside, they can’t even make a good product anymore, I could trudge along the game if everything was an 8/10 but now the company culture is actively influencing the quality of the game.

I don’t enjoy this forever unfun grind PvE, all of it stinks of the very definition of time sink, Korthia being its latest example. I have no incentive to do raiding or dungeons which only leaves Torghast and I haven’t stepped in there for any reason outside quests.

The current narrative has managed to squander 19 years of legacy and sours much of the investment I had in it. Anything can be subject to be twisted into a shadow of its former self, none of it is written for the players but the writers. I’ll stop here before I built a wall of complaints.

I’d like to think RP is is the last shred of interest I got but when I witness the latest shenanigans combined with my procrastinating proclivities… Yeah, I can say I’ve been IC for even an hour per week.

Bad times…

I am not sure what signs people have seen so far but literally everything so far has been going downhill.

It is absolute folly to think Blizzard will get better based on the decisions of US courts. It has been how many months now since the lawsuit?

Even if a magical reform happens and somehow it all turns jolly once more with Blizzard and Americans finally learn what worker unions can do… I’m sure they’ll find more ways to change the game and find every possible racist and sexist reference and change that into something else. More store mounts, more wacky lore written by people with a 2 paragraph twitter bio who you’re not allowed to criticize unless you’ve written 5 books and written a movie yourself. Etc. Etc.

Whatever this company is going to become, the future looks anything but bright. Ah well, I suppose the one legacy my character will leave behind is posting on a dead roleplaying forum until this either gets shut down or once they realize that unsubbed accounts can still :poop: post on the forums.

Tearing off the bandaid to reveal my punished soul for a moment, I can’t lie to y’all that it’s beyond distressing to see a game we’ve all put so much time into/made so many friends over apparently on the verge of total collapse.

I’ll huff the copium and live in hope that things might just turn around if (and it’s a big if) the next expac is beyond good, and the company turns a new leaf to begin a bold new redemption arc - but honestly, after a week in Orgrimmar at peak RP hours with only the NPCs for company, even I’m beginning to see the void at the bottom of the pit. With all due respect to the PCU, Perroy wasn’t lying when he said you guys would be the last RPers on the server - they’re all out on a campaign at the moment, and the population dip in Orgrimmar without them really shows. Not that it’s been totally dead, I know there’s a lot of people still holding out in Dalaran (good luck to them ofc!), and I still managed to recruit some lovely guys for a spontaneous event the other day, but still…

This might get me a forum vacay, but I really hope the Blizzard big wigs (both the corpos, and the story writers) realise what they’ve done, and that it keeps them awake at night.

I mean, I know in my own case that while I’m happy to report that in the 2-ish years since I properly started DMing roleplay events (in which time I’ve ran bout 3 a week on average!), I’ve only done a handful that have gone badly wrong through nobody’s fault but my own - I can say with certainty that after every event I ran that didn’t go so well, I felt utterly mortified and embarrassed for days afterwards.

Ask me about the one I did in the far south of Durotar that almost made me delete my account and flee the country- or rather, please don’t because the memories still haunt me.

But then again; that was me screwing up in front of say, a dozen people, in an event nobody had to pay for, that maybe cost them a few hours of one evening they didn’t particularly enjoy - and in all cases I apologised profusely afterwards and offered to do another event to make up for it.

Meanwhile, the current folks in charge of WoW must surely know they’re disappointing millions of people, who pay good money, to spend dozens of hours they don’t enjoy - and then doing nothing to better their experience.

This isn’t to big myself up by the by - but it is to say that if I was a Blizzard higher up behind the current state of the game right now, both lorewise and mechanics wise, especially with such a massive dip in players, I’d probably be on the verge of self imposed exile into Siberia with the shame of my involvement in it all - or at least offering an apology to the people who are paying good money only to log in and have a bad time because of my poor design choices.

My buddy Valteryl is already making an igloo

I mean we all know why this is happening, and Blizzard are digging themselves further into a hole just about every day it seems.

Personally I find it difficult to find much enthusiasm in a setting so dissimilar from the one I used to enjoy. Shadowlands isn’t satisfied creating a one dimensional narrative, the writers had the stroke of brilliance to drag older and long established lore into the mess. Whether this was to try and grasp for some sort of continuity or in the hopes of it playing to nostalgia… I don’t know, but it poisoned just about the entire well to me.

This is to say nothing of the gross business practices (thinly veiled threats against those who might unionize), mistreatment of their workers (sexual harrassment, response to such etc.), and unwillingness to change either when it comes down to it (Bobby the Tick is still employed). None of which is exactly inspiring to the playerbase either.

Mostly it’s just sad.

I say this as someone who is happily playing other games as well, but there’s no getting around the fact that a lot of my best times with online RP were had in WoW. It’s a bit like watching your childhood playground being demolished to make way for a poorly managed landfill. It’s disgusting to look at, unhealthy for those too close to it, and it firmly underlines just how gone those happier times are.

He was teaching Zekhan Thalassian so that he could use Silvermoon’s libraries. Which are, unsurprisingly, not in common or zandali. Lol.
