When Arthas corrupted it by ressurecting Kel’thuzad in it, didn’t the Elves fall ill because they were passively linked to the Sunwell 24/7 and then they had to blow it up to stop it affecting them?
All thalassian elves are linked to the Sunwell, whether they want to be or not. It crosses dimensions and time (hence why the BElves had no issue in WoD-Draenor). The kel’thuzad reanimation corrupted it with Death magic, and that’s why Kael had to blow it up, otherwise it would have wiped out every single high/blood elf*.
Given that they had to blow it up instead of simply refusing its power, it can be surmised that thalassians can’t refuse it even if they want to, or if they can then it’s not easy to do so (and might require a significant change in physiology - see the fel and void elves).
*this is also why Rommath was so freaked out about Alleria - a void corrupted Sunwell would have forcibly corrupted every thalassian on Azeroth and beyond. Immediate extinction.
Correct, I think.
However, I do not know if the “new” sunwell, with M’uru’s essence in it has the same effect. And by the current one, I mean the post-sunwell plateau one. I think that was the whole conclusion point with Sunwell Plateau and the Blood elves: They could continue draining on M’uru’s power as they had before, but this time he allowed it, rather than it being forced.
Equally, the blood elves could choose not to be slaves to a (battery) of power, but rather pick themselves up. I believe that was the whole point of it. Holding yourself to a higher standard, etc.
In any case, its not uncommon that Fel can use all other kinds of power to fuel itself- It’s corruptive nature is the whole point of it.
M’uru allowed them to do so the entire time, it was part of the vision Velen had that would see the blood elves redeemed. It was always consensual on his end, but he was corrupted and turned into a dark Naaru, so we had to kill him. Velen then used the last of his essence to cleanse the Sunwell and restore it.
All Thalassian elves are linked to the Sunwell, they all passively siphon magic from it otherwise the blood elves would have had to continue doing what they did in TBC - suck arcane crystals and living creatures dry for mana.
Never forget what they took from us.
Because he was in Shadowlands, was a villain and wasn’t Sylvanas or the Jailer. It’s kinda hard to not look good when that is the case.
Edit: Sylvanas being manipulated by Denathrius and only realising when he’d almost won that she’d also be forced to serve would actually have made sense. He’s a more manipulative character with the charm to pull such a feat off.

god i love this server sometimes
If you excise the dreadlords=Denathrius’ pawns stuff (which iirc was not part of the initial 9.0, but came in a later patch?), he was a great villain. Charismatic, clear motivations, voiced by Ray chase, and with a very clear reason for why we need to stab him until he falls over.
Don’t think Blizzard has ever written a successful “master manipulator” plotline honestly. Whether it’s a limitation on the writers or the medium, they should probably not try.
Given the events of Alleria’s visit to Quel’Danas and the nature of the Sunwell as it is nowadays, I think it’s a reasonable assumption that it doesn’t apply to the Void Elves. Whether or not they still suffer from magic addiction, and whether or not that addiction is being fed by the Void or not, are both questions I hope to one day see addressed.
So, I just did the quest for the Slitherdrake…
And it makes me sad, because the Netherdragons, Twilight Dragons and Chromatic Dragons are basicly all ignored this expansion, but they add another experimental-Dragon race…
I mean Netherdragons are former Black Dragons, Chromatic and Twilight are the results of Nefarian and Deathwing’s experiments on Dragons… So, surely, they should’ve had a stake in the story of the Black Dragonflight? Surely they also felt the call of home?
There is supposedly a blue dragon questline in this patch. It might drop next week? Some people have suggested the netherwing will be involved with it, but no one really knows.
They might’ve even cancelled it, iirc the only suggestion of its existence came from an interview, and you know how reliable those are…
Well I hope the Netherdragons do get a stake in this expansion, they deserve it after all they went through in Outlands!
I find it stupid.
You can’t give us lore about fel being as corruptive as they kept saying since, well, ever, and then go “oh no they only enslave demons as cannon fodder it is fine.”
Slowly but surely, everyone is just picking a magic color that essentially is as destructive or healing, as dogmatic and liberating, as orderly and chaotic as any other.
What was it about everyone being super?
I wouldn’t even have been against it had the franchise began exactly like that, anyone can be anything but it didn’t even as gameplay driven as Blizzard was, they still had a restraint regarding lore implications of classes being expanded.
PS : Conspiracy - Bobby Right Hand of Mammon wanting people to do more race changes without having the pesky class combo restrictions.
It’s all because the consequences of using magic are entirely neglected in game mechanics. Monks never have to worry about keeping themselves in balance after contact with corrupted blood in Nazmir or many kinds of plague and decay, fel-users don’t have to suffer useless or even harmful mutations, there isn’t a single Ren’dorei hallucinating in the daylight, even the druids can contact the Nightmare without getting permanently afflicted and the Lightforged can do the quests to get the eye of N’Zoth on their heads. Game mechanics are just like that, they demand everyone to be able to do everything, but it doesn’t mean everyone should do anything.
I’ve become so cynical about blizzard it wouldn’t surprise me if that what they were hoping for.
Remember when they had void magic be able to be undetectable and actively be able to hide all traces of spellwork? It always reminded me of playing tag when you were little and that one kid went “no I’ve got a tag shield you can’t get me”.
The different flavours of magic, at this point, are all one and the same and there’s no real consistency in what they are able to do, cannot do or what they don’t mix well with. They’re just vehicles for whatever story Blizzard want to tell rather than actual world-building.
Tragically true. Pick a color from the and that will be the only thing different about your choice of magic at this point.
Picking up magic type based on which color fits my personality best according to teen magazine quizzes.
