PTR Spoiler/Discussion Thread (Part 4)

It has been many years since you chose to follow me, despite where I led you.
Know this. I do not deal in regrets. For all that has happened, and all we have done… It would be a greater crime still, to falter now.
Return to Azeroth, my champion. You will be of more use there, in the days to come. And should any of ours allies ask…
Tell them that the Dark Lady watches, even now.

Followed by a heartfelt quest turn in

For comparison, the traitor dialogue is

I have made many foes on the path that brought me here. Most of them once called me an ally.
I do not regret the choices I made, nor do I bear ill will towards those who met me with their fangs bared.
But know this. I cannot stop now. I MUST NOT stop now, or all I ahve done will have been for naught.
Return to Azeroth. Fight the battles ahead of you. One day our paths will cross again.

And a more formal quest turn in:

Anyone want to tell her the rest of her loyalists are trying to raid her sock drawer in Windrunner spire.

I mean its mostly for an old bow but they want anything that belonged to her

  • “I don’t regret the eternal obliteration of hundreds of trillions of people.” Sylvanas Windrunner 2025.

Looking forward to the 2026 Midnight Sylvanas Windrunner raid then, Gloria.

What the hell was the point of all this then: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsE6yfPciM0

It’s one those moments that really sticks out, just like how her internal monologue went out about how she was the first female Warchief… I very much blame Golden, Sylvanas never came across as a character who’d linger on such trite element.

At least Garrosh didn’t need a redemption arc to admit the same position.

Windrunners genetically incapable of feeling regret

If I had to make excuses and guess what they’re going for, it could be threading the needle between regret and remorse - the latter Sylvanas feels, it’s called out by Tyrande in the judgment sequence, we know that much.

She doesn’t regret what she tried to do (fix the broken system of the Shadowlands and death) but she does feel remorse over it (because of everyone that got murderised+obliterated+hurt in the process).

Perhaps this is giving them too much credit, or perhaps it’s too nuanced for WoW’s standard writing.

Purgeposting Mode Active: Remorse is still more than Vereesa feels for what she did.

More generally, in retrospect…isn’t it kinda screwed up that everyone accepted Sylvanas was the sole fixer of the Maw? Like, we know that souls down there are getting tortured into oblivion, and that’s bad, and we should stop it.

So why is she doing it alone? Shouldn’t the Covenants be working to fix it too? Are they (everyone, frankly, including Tyrande and the living) happy extending Sylvanas’ penance so she suffers more, at the cost of souls getting tortured for longer? Not terribly morally good of them…

This really feels like the Windrunners and some others have death not allowed in their TRPs. And since there’s no DM to kick them out of the guild, we have what we have.

Sylvanas dying would’ve been better for her honestly.

Like, say Tyrande executes her. Her soul immediately goes to Arbiter Pelagos for judgment, standing five feet away.

Pelagos judges her remorseful (which we know that she is!), which means that she’s not due for either the Maw or Revendreth.
Under the way the afterlife now works, judged with compassion, she skips off to either a peaceful afterlife or maybe Maldraxxus where she becomes a new super head honcho of war to replace all the ones that got murderised during the expansion like Kel’thuzad.

And if that seems a bit screwed up to you, well, I guess Sylvanas was right \o/

sylvanas had her soul removed. vereesa did not to want to see dalaran run red. makes you think doesnt it. (sociopathy may be a windrunner genetic trait.)

Nah, the DM is there. Just decided not to kill off his OC as they participate in the campaign themselves. What was it that TTS said? “If it has no stats it cannot die!”

She was. And it’s on the main cast to not have dismantled this foul system along with her and the Jailer.

Another note on how upon learning of how this afterlife system functions, religions all across Azeroth should have raided the place and decided that they will take permanent residence there so their own people are easily being ferried into their afterlife and not let some rando they never instated to begin with it.

I really like this version of Sylvanas. I was afraid they’d do a 180 on her personality since her soul is (more or less - still undead) whole again, but she almost seems back to a version of her old self. She even words things the way she sometimes would back in Wrath and Cata. “It is done” (Shadowmourne questline: “So, it is done”). “Now, begone” (Shadowmourne questline: “Now, leave me”). “Isn’t it obvious?” (Her infamous meeting with Garrosh: Isn’t it obvious, Warchief? I serve the Horde").

I actively hated the way she was written - her choices and her dialogue - throughout all of BFA and Shadowlands. But now, her “rescuing” (or offering a way forward, as she puts it) souls in the Maw kind of draws parallels to how she worked as a light in the dark for the Forsaken after their liberation from the Scourge.

I love that.

Hasn’t that always been kind of an issue with them?

Nightborne are giga-belves, Highmountain tauren are giga-tauren, Lightforged draenei are giga-draenei, Mag’har orcs are giga-orcs, Zandalari trolls are giga-trolls, Mechagnomes are giga-gnomes and Earthen are giga-dwarves.

All of the above allied races just take the base race, magnify the culture and the defining traits of that race and then give them a slightly different aesthetic.
Void elves and Dark Iron dwarves are a twist on the traditional formula of blood elves and dwarves respectively, while Kul Tiran humans and vulpera arguably bring brand new ideas to the setting. It’s debatable though, as it could be argued that Kul Tirans overlap a bit with Gilneans and that vulpera overlap a bit with goblins.

I still find Midnight’s HD redesign of the Stratholme smoke plume hilarious.

Truly, this is Midnight’s most impactful old world update.

“The Forsaken were truly a nation now: a fetid, gore-caked, hideous mass of lifeless husks, skilled in combat, devastating with the arcane arts, and unhindered by fetters of morality. They had been honed into the perfect weapon. Her weapon. And they had struck the killing blow for which she had built them. She cared nothing for their fate.”

This is your annual reminder that Sylvanas never cared for the Forsaken in any capacity more than you would care for the fuel in your car. Like I get it, the Forsaken can still view her as a liberator and matron figure but undead Sylvanas never purposefully “rescued” anyone until she was sent to the Maw.

Edge of Night has Sylvanas at her most suicidal, whereas at other times (such as Before the Storm) she clearly does care about the Forsaken.

I would wager taking her words when she’s not going through a mental breakdown are worth more than the ones where she is.

They’re a different flavour but not really giga. I never got the sense that they were superior, especially once we blew up the Nightwell.

Ditto for Highmountain. Different flavour (bigger horns, mining instead of herbing) but that’s about it.

I forgot that Sylvanas has the added ruleset of knowing when someone is reading her inner thoughts in a novel.

On top of that, I must correct myself: She rescued exactly one soul in her undeath and that was Nathanos.

The Zandalari i think are a slight variation there. Rather than “troll but better.” their something of that step between the tribalism of trolls and the regality of elves. If anything theyd see themselves as “elves if they weren’t cringe.”

Nightborne likewise I would say are less “blood elves but better” and more “Highborne if the sentinels didnt keep executing us for leaving our towers.”

The Zanadalari and Kul Tirans actually got their own animations though. Can’t count em.
