Remove: Account Silence by Vote

Title speaks to it all.

The system tool by which players can easily right click report another player for virtually no reason, which is very evidently un-reviewed, needs to be removed from the game. This is being heavily abused, particularly if one is vocal in battlegrounds or other large forums, and anyone simply doesn’t “like” what you’ve said. Even a mere criticism can be reported and is considered “abuse” which is frankly, absurd.

The system itself is unclear, as players are unable to know how many (largely unjustified) chat reports they have received (players should receive a live tally of this in game) and how many they are away from some ridiculous silence which doubles each time you get one, and appears not to reset for an equally ridiculous amount of time.

Furthermore, aside from this being an unclear, unfair and broken system, it was not in the original iteration of classic, and is unfitting with the more unregulated (read: fun) nature of that game.

There’s a myriad of other reasons to remove this but I really cba because just thinking about this is beyond irritating.

Thanks

I don’t know what you are talking about. I am spamming “commands”, curses and other “angry man talk” on half of AVs. So alot of people didn’t and don’t like what I say and in what manner. And I never had any issues. So, what one could do to be banned because of many reports? Any real examples?

All it takes are enough people reporting you either for spamming or language, regardless of wether or you actually used any bad language or not, the system does not care.
It is true that you can get your case reviewed and the silence penalty removed but seeing as the first time silence is 24hrs and the GM average response time is 10+ days, getting it reviewed before the penalty wears off on it’s own is actually legit impossible.
It’s a terribly broken system and people know and are abusing it for that very reason.
Give out harsh penalties for abusing the system and that might help.
But that takes effort. Effort Blizzard Customer Service will no longer provide.

yeah happend to me 2-3 times i got banned for almost 1 week in chatt, simply cause i told the horde they can win vs Alliance premade, but they prefered to lose quick

u lived under a rock or something ? early stages of honor system release, top rankers got massive reports by other farmers just to mess with their honor farm… then the top rankers got banned and have to send in mails and let the blizzardos investigate and remove bann… lol real examples? theres like hundreds

Adding my last thread on this topic, which contains more substantive arguments for why this should functionality should be removed in its entirety, or to be completely overhauled in a transparent way.

Also adding below an update:

Blizzard’s own EULA doesn’t actually appear to allow them (in truth they can probably do whatever they please, but they should at least clarify their rules) to issue chat bans outside of racism, violence, and intentionally trying to ruin the experience of others (this intent part seems clear). If they would like to re-draft their EULA, would do better to at least be accurate and phrase as follows: “we can suspend or ban you for any reason whatsoever, and with regard to account silencing, the only requirement is that the other party express being aggrieved.”

If for example, one said in a Battleground “go mine [bad word, but not racist or violence]”, this is indeed worthy of an account silence, nowithstanding the fact that almost no one would be truly aggrieved by this, and the fact that the only intent inherent in such statement is to try and help someone win a game, enhancing their experience and not detracting from it.

Below extract per Blizzard’s own EULA, with emphasis added in bold:

  • Disruption / Harassment: Engage in any conduct intended to disrupt or diminish the game experience for other players, or disrupt operation of Blizzard’s Platform in any way, including:

  • Disrupting or assisting in the disruption of any computer used to support the Platform or any Game environment. ANY ATTEMPT BY YOU TO DISRUPT THE PLATFORM OR UNDERMINE THE LEGITIMATE OPERATION OF ANY GAME MAY BE A VIOLATION OF CRIMINAL AND CIVIL LAWS.

  • Harassment, “griefing,” abusive behavior or chat, conduct intended to unreasonably undermine or disrupt the Game experiences of others, deliberate inactivity or disconnecting, and/or any other activity which violates Blizzard’s Code of Conduct or In-Game Policies.

Reading the above EULA extract, it does not reasonably follow that the intent of the drafting thereto is to allow Blizzard to punish people merely because someone else was offended, not least when a statement was never actually directed at a particular person.

These rules badly need to be removed.
