Sharding on RP Servers still active in zones they shouldn't be and upcoming content will make it worse

Good evening,

This is both a request for a fix to an issue, and a pre-emptive request to ensure the damage caused by upcoming content is minimised to Roleplaying servers. Once again, with the 11.1.7 patch, there’s going to be an event taking place in Stormwind and Orgrimmar.

We know from the Hearthstone event it will lag the server and inevitably, cause sharding to be turned back on. Wherever sharding turns on, it does massive damage to roleplaying in the region outside of small scale events with guilds. Roleplaying servers have been promised for years Sharding wouldn’t be turned back on for zones that don’t need it (I.e. current content zones). https://x.com/WarcraftDevs/status/1022566187266232320

But even major events like the Tournament of Ages aren’t immune to this problem. Because they shared a continent with the War Within prepatch, the entire event had to deal with Sharding. We too had to deal with it on Argent Dawn for Prepatch adjacent campaigns around Dalaran designed to be open to any member of the public walking into the area, as we assumed the sharding would only be enabled for Dragonblight, but was for the entire continent.

Now, we still have to deal with it on content zones that aren’t active. It was enabled for Pandaria remix. Pandaria is still sharding enabled. Every week, public events with attendees in the hundreds deal with having to try an drag people across shards, because the work that should’ve been done almost a year ago to turn it back off, hasn’t.

AD might be the largest RP server in europe and one of the largest unconnected realms, but we’re not alone in our troubles. We’ve sent in reports, we’ve filed it as bugs with various different customer supports, but none of it is entertained with a response that actions it, except for this thread here relating to the Hearthstone event last year, and there were several reports of that before it was actioned.

We ask collectively that when the realms need to be restarted for 11.1.7 it is turned off Everywhere that doesn’t need it. That means Everywhere except for War Within content zones. It still happens, on top of this issue with level brackets in the Dragon Isles, Pandaria, and a few other isolated remenants from that prepatch and in Legion Dalaran, despite there being little to no need now given the expansion has been out for nine months.

We can accept the need for sharding during the upcoming Greedy Emissary event due to the strain it places on the server. But isolating that damaging sharding usage to the zones being used only will do a lot of good for the roleplaying community.

Roleplaying communities exist for Stromgarde and other zones related to the story being released and deserve the chance to thrive and welcome people in during this exciting time. Players congregating in Pandaria shouldn’t need to join in-game communities to try and find a public event when it isn’t current content.

Night elf roleplayers shouldn’t have to not use their race’s new capital for major events because people can’t find one another. All of these places will be critical in keeping roleplaying alive and healthy during the upcoming month or so of the Greedy Emissary effectively disabling Stormwind and Orgrimmar.

Make sure they have the best legs to stand on, and our wait once it ends to get the capitals back to usable is as short as possible and we aren’t forced to chase it after a month. We just want to tell stories in the world and find other people in it to naturally interact with. This is a bug afterall, not a feature we can’t find our freinds.

I rarely post on the forums but this is definitely an issue that needs to be fixed. I have had to join a group several times when I wanted to RP in Dawn’s Blossom, which is in Pandaria.

Lately Blizzard has named the RP community more often and wants to add more stuff that favours them. With the announced player housing and all the toys they have released the last few expansions, they defintely seem to prove their words more and more.
But if you want RP to be possible at all, it is high time that they take a look at what their servers can handle and increase that.

This is something that didn’t need a repeat. Specifically because of how disrupting it is to roleplay.

And, yes, they always “forget” to turn it off, which means we have to deal with that again as well.

Sharding on roleplay realms should be used as sparingly as possible. There shouldn’t be any zones/places that activively prohibit RP by keeping it sharded. Ideally, only current/busy content should be sharded.

Agreed with Visemar.

Blizzard are pushing more and more for assisting the RP community, even the trading post is geared towards RPers, yet this sharding risks losing the RP community meaning all these changes like Housing, Transmogs, toys will be for nothing if the community is not there.

The way to maintain the community is to turn off sharding on RP realms, as always promised to do. I mean like Zyretha has said, we completely understand that sometimes with ingame events it is needed. That is fine. But please turn them off afterwards.

Even last week Stormwind the biggest spot for RP suddenly became sharded and people could not find each other, and had to join groups, and as said twice, Pandaria attracts a large chunk of RPers each week yet, phasing/sharding makes it impossible for some to join in.

The most vexing part is that we keep having to remind them of this. Ideally, it gets turned off automatically the moment an event ends. It shouldn’t be a manual process, that has to go through a chain of people first.

Though I prefer a more permanent solution so that we never have to deal with sharding again.

The phasing is getting ridiculous. There’s no need for it in Pandaria and Dragon isles especially. It’s so hard to try and schedule large events for the server when there are so few open spaces that don’t suffer from it.

Blizzard, if you truly care about the roleplaying community, please re-consider where the phasing is relevant.

Agreed that this needs to be fixed. Especially with content growing more and more in already existing areas (That we usually use anyway to avoid said phasing) Blizz need to make sure that these issues are being taken into consideration when implementing these systems. At the very least for the long term!

The extra levels of sharding added to the Dragon Isles, aka the thing where everyone below 70 is sharded away from everyone above with no recourse to merge shards unless you reach 70 is absolutely ridiculous - so is sharding just remaining on in zones that have had events in.

It’s a shame that we’re getting pushed out of the world little by little by oversights even as other parts of the design team make things like housing with RP in mind. I’d like to see an RP tag/war mode style phase one day but for now I’d just be happy to see the sharding removed from zone’s it has been left in.

I almost went and pushed the idea for an RP only phase myself, but I see I’ve been beaten to it! Absolutely vouching for this as this sharding business is becoming genuinely constricting with how many RP hubs we’re losing to this.

It could even be used as some manner of ‘evergreen feature’ that removes the hostile mobs from specific cities like Suramar and The Undermine to unlock entire cities’ worth of RP hubs.

I want this as well. Not only will it remove the need to shard RP areas, it will also seperate us from most OOCers, which means that places such as Goldshire and Stormwind’s market square become RP areas again. This can work like warmode, and it will allow players from non-RP realms to dip into RP as well.

It will have no mobs, no nodes, and no quests, and it can only be opt into/out of in capital cities, to avoid it being used for easy traveling.

There is already a lot of places around azeroth that is phased due to quest and similar that one have to take into consideration when planning out -where- to RP and now added on with the sharding on multiple continents. Northrend, Dragon isle, Pandaria it just makes it a lot harder to find and be able to RP. I’ve started to avoid these sharded areas like the plague because of the hassle.

The amount of times I’ve been to a large scale events and it’s just no one there and I know I have to start messaging people to get into a group to stop getting sharded is more than I can count. Sometimes I am lucky but one of my friends that I am meeting IC might not be as lucky and having to take time to create groups and hope because we’re making a group we’re not getting kicked into another empty shard and then jumping out of a group and back in and dragging other people along that is in the correct one… It’s time taken away that could be spend having fun RP-ing instead.

Some days the only thing I want to do is just log in and pretend to be a troll that worship a glorified pink trash panda with scales… Not be boring old me trying to get in touch with someone either on wow, discord and/or having to resort to using smoke signals to get an inv to a group to deal with people to be able to enjoy an RP-event. (Smoke signals might be a biiit over the top but that’s how it feels at times.) More than once have I just logged off instead.

I hope they get their butts into gear and fix it. Especially since Blizz have promised again and again to keep the sharding on RP server to a minimum. Also sorry for writing a darn bible.

TLDR: Blizz please… Fix the sharding it’s a pain in every Roleplayers behinds that take away from what we want to do - Roleplay.

And to add to the list, turn off sharding in Undermine once the patch rolls around so Undermine can actually be usable for RP. The place was built for RP, and yet I can never find people.

As mentioned before, a RP Mode system like War Mode would solve all issues.

We’re an RP server, please give us the tools to RP and remove the sharding for the hubs that are not so crowded anymore.
I get lots of whispers during our Pandaria market of friends who need an invite. There’s no reason for Pandaria to be sharded anymore.

Indeed, sharding severely undermines RP, which, to be frank, is the only reason I’ve stuck with the game since 2018.

At the very least, any sharding that isn’t strictly necessary for the game to function at all should be done away with, and any such necessary sharding needs to be lifted once the need for it has passed.

The amount of effort that ends up going into avoiding sharding, or dealing with it when it’s found really goes against the feel of RP.

Sharding is doing some serious damage to the hobby and it really doesn’t need to continue.

Please do something about this, before people end up trying to find RP elsewhere.

I’d very much like this RP community to continue, but it will struggle when such hurdles are placed in its way.

I am glad we are seeing much support here.

Roleplay, on a roleplay server, should never be artificially impaired by sharding, or relegated to a few small and inconvenient fringe areas while our main areas cannot be used for roleplay.

There should be as few hurdles and barriers as possible. There should never be areas that actively try to prevent roleplayers from congregating together.

People roleplaying does not cause lag or instable servers.

edit and if sharding is needed for some event, then, at least, ensure that it is turned off the moment the event ends, and that roleplayers don’t have to ask or beg on these forums and social media for it to be turned off again. This can truly be handled much better.

Bumping because it’s affecting way too many events at this point

Lending my voice in support of this. Having begun organizing my own larger events, I am dreading the concept of Sharding. I had to change locations because Blizzard insists on Sharding even newer zones. I respect that it would lower the cluttering in zones like the Dragon Isles, but many of us really wanna use it for fun roleplaying events.

I am also in favour of this:

Purely just for the functionality of like opting into this and knowing this will allow me to see and interact with my fellow roleplaying peers.

I don’t use the forums AT ALL anymore, but I made sure to scramble through old emails and two factor authentications I forgot ages ago to comment here and bump this thread. This has been a problem since the dawn of time by this point. And since Blizzard has become more aware of our community and RP servers as a whole, I’m hoping without hope that this thread gains more traction. :blue_heart:

Sharding means we cannot find role play organically. We have to join groups, guilds, communities to make it happen. It is not fun. Role playing on a role playing server should be as natural as breathing. Let us greet all the strangers and old acquaintances randomly.
