Everyone seems to be over thinking this mentor business.
If there’s a help channel then I’ll most likely lurk in it and answer questions that I know the answer to when ever they arise.
All this talk of having to be an expert or ‘pro player’ to answer questions is silly.
I don’t think anyone needs to flag themselves as a mentor just to answer questions, if you don’t know the answer then keep quiet, if you do know and feel helpful then answer it.
The whole mentor system is just a scheme to cut costs of CS.
All these “helping” systems only contributed to ever increasing boost spam so far, wonder if it will be any different? Highly doubt.
You are comparing boost sellers to people advising others where to go?

In WoW, you can be best at things that are not PvP or PvE endgame. Maybe a new player isn’t even interested in those far-away milestones just yet. They do not know if they want to stick around yet, why pressure them with the most high-end advice when they aren’t even caught up with basics?

Does anyone else find it ironic that the thread about “Newcomer mentor” is linked to the arguably biggest database of help for newcomers on a playing field full of available help sites…
Beta 2004 ? No, old account does not make me any smarter though. I do not think account age should have too much meaning. Me idling in Ironforge, Shatrath, Dalaran, Stormwind, Garrison, Dalaran again and Boralus would not make me a good guide.
Maybe you don’t remember, but I do remember that all the world first for profession, the best people at pet battle, or the first to win even the silliest thing like the STV fishing content, they where all the best guild on the server
I’m not sure what best guilds of a realm have to do with mentoring…

Oh do us a favour and give it a rest. It’s for new players, not an indoctrination process to make WoW’s next World First Mythic Raider. 
They are just going to parrot the best of the best of best answer to everyone. There is no discussion to be had, or reasoning with them.
