Can those of you who like to call things ‘retail’ please explain to me what ‘retail’ is to you?
Whilst you’re at it, kindly include the last time you even played retail; thanks.

Everything I don’t like!
You’re actually the most Retail of everything, Miylee!! /s
Edit: for real tho, “Retail” is to WoW Classic forum-users what “Woke” is to conservative commentators. It’s the evil bogeyman that you never have to explain what it is, but which is supposedly super scary and evil and will ruin everything…
For me personally, it is the modern version of wow, the more competitive & sweaty version of the game. I play it to be competitive, to get world ranks, see those pink parses.
I view it as the opposite to classic in a sense, in classic I like goofing around, not sweating around world ranks, but still trying my best.
This is partly as to why I don’t tryhard classic by playing in a guild that pushes for HC LK 25, with the other reason being that I play at top 100 world level in retail with splits etc, I simply do not have the schedule to play both hardcore.
I don’t “like” to call things Retail, but answer anyhow.
Last time played Retail: Winter Veil BfA (Christmas 2018)
For me Retail is
New models for characters
Play account, not Character
– Account bound things
levelling does not matter
– scaling zones
– I can take 10 at level mobs in y gear, not die.
Professions not matter
Professions only gold sink
I have pet from level 1 as Hunter
No feed pets, no bullets, no mats for anuything
– Mats can be used while in bank
personalized loot
Shared tags
Quest helper
Glittering interact things
Automatic learn skills
getting wellfare gear
forced talents choices
people being Go-go-go
Levelling being totally dispropportionate to Dungeons/raids – Faceroll vs. smallest mistake = death and flame down from group.
levelling you get all things on silver platter
NOT FUN! And not made for fun, like a second job.
NB. All these are bad changes in my book
That happened in Classic too. The only place I haven’t seen that is in HC.
Thanks for the answer though.
Classic too, yes, not Vanilla, BC Wrath first time round, sorry confusing answer.
And HC I don’t dare Dungeons
As soon as I saw people asking for GearScore again in WotLK Classic after it was widely agreed that GearScore is a big part of what ruined the fun in WoW from WotLK onwards, I was already done with WotLK again. The same mistakes keep on happening, and this time it wasn’t even Blizzard’s fault, just self-flagellation of the playerbase…
Agree. I not play Wrath Classic. Only HC or Era. People in Wrath too … miss word, asking for GS, Go-go-go, flame for least mistake.
Is not fun! I love Achievements, but atmosphere of Wrath now … not so much.
And with Cata coming, and no Wrath Era server - not going to play Wrath no more.
that’s just your opinion bro
Everything on these forum is like peoples’ opinion, bro.
Most have no clue what Retail is really, they havent played in 3 expansions, but just rant, ITS RETAIL!!
exactly this. they don’t even know what’s going on
Retail is: losing the fruit of all your hard work and hard-earned perfection because level-cap is raised again and you have to follow…
(I stopped playing after WotLK so not sure if that’s still the case. Is it still the case? Is the new gear always more powerful at each expansion?)
Also: flying mounts in Azeroth, no more wild PvP. (and phased world, even less wild PvP)
If something is in retail then it’s retail, the last time I logged in was a few days ago. I didn’t really play anything.
As @Turtlehunt said the Modern version is retail and the classic is not. Even though you pay monthly subscription.
Quoted for truth.
Maybe I did not play 3 expansions, but all things I list still are in Retail, and not in Classic. And those too the main reasons why I quit retail 3 or maore xpacs ago.
I log in once a year - for Anniversary Ach - and hurry away!
Soo gear? That’s all that means right? Gear… Even on wrath classic your char is so much more than gear. Everything you earned that actually matters you get to take with you: transmogs (not in the first 3 expansions), mounts, tabards, toys, special items with flavor text, memories (cringe answer I know, but it’s true).
Perfection means perfection. Once you are not perfect anymore, you lost it.
On a side note, gear is about power. Power is the most important aspect of “perfection”. One day you’re the boss, the next day (expansion) you back to washing the floor.
Literally everything you said is subjective.
Perfection to player a wouldn’t be to get bis gear but reach a certain rating in pvp or even kill a specific boss on mythic when it’s the latest content. Gear is a means to an end for a lot of players.
No, perfection is a term that refers to all aspects. And I am referring to the perfection of the character, that is, the perfection of the data of the character saved on Blizzard servers.
If you prefer, substitute the word “perfection” by “perfection in all areas on all aspects”.
I appreciate words can mean different things for different people, but I am telling you what I mean, and what I meant, on the post to which you replied.
That is what I mean, perfection on all aspects on the Character data saved on the server (its gear, its achievements, its everything). Things that are not saved in the Blizzard data, are not part of it, not part of what I mean.
(«kill a specific boss on mythic when it’s the latest content» if that provides an achievement saved on the server data, then yes, if it does not provide anything saved on the severs data, then no)
