Thoughts on the new Arachnophobia Mode in the war within?

The part where you belittle players very real phobias and tell them to just get over it.

I never belittled anyone please take that fragile mentality and keep it to yourself.

What I find puzzling is how in the midst of introducing more accessibility options to the game, they in TWW will make us have to re-earn normal flying again. And the acquisition process at max level is not even the problem.

They are essentially forcing you to speedrun your first character through the content without being able to just hover and appreciate the zones, and doing so through a feature a LOT of disabled or differently abled people were so thankful to get.

What is going on here?

facing your fears to overcome them works when the fears are rational
the thing with phobia’s is, they’re often not, some can be correlated back to specific trauma, but often not

Its definately a case of blizzard considering arachnophobes the little guy (which fair they’re not a majority lets be real) and blizzard trying to look out for the little guy
possibly for improvement of their image as a PR thing, but maybe one of the devs has crippling arachnophobia and raised it as an issue and they legitemately care about this now.

Not an actual phobia by the definition of phobias which people approach things like Arachnophobia with, people who are called fatphobic are often just people who are judgemental of those who are fat. Being judgemental is not a phobia.

Mental phobias or actual phobias if you will, as in the things that really manifest as phobias in the sense of irrational fears. These are generally well documented and very clearly defined.

To name an example (sorry to pick you out as an example) this person is saying they have a rational fear of spiders, that is, they are able to look at the spiders on screen without a fear response, or atleast a fear response that can be rationalized away or overcome with rationality, knowing that these aren’t real spiders

With an irrational fear or a phobia, that fear response is still triggered and it can be very intense even with the rational knowledge that it’s not actual real spiders triggering it

This is spot on. I know if I’m standing at the top of a mountain or walking down narrow steep stairs in WoW I’m not, personally, going to die or be severely injured. Yet I still feel irrationally dizzy and sick. People can’t help the effect of phobias and I’m glad Blizzard has addressed one that can be helped ingame.

If I had to guess, it’s because of a design decision made during the early stages of TBC what would cause massive outrage if “nerfed” today.

Dragonriding / Skyriding requires constant action from the player. Outside of fringe cases (for example flying from Valdrakken to the cooking event at the Iskaara Tuskarrs with no intention to stop whatsoever) the player is required to input something every few seconds, whether it’s gaining height, landing to gather herb/ore, landing to kill some rare enemy or correcting direction. This also includes managing your vigor.

Old-school flying does not have a stamina. You can stay suspended in the air or fly towards a direction without requiring player input or management (unless you hit a mountain or go out of world bounds into fatigue) forever. If old-school flying had a stamina bar then I expect that it wouldn’t be locked behind an achievement.

And going off-topic here, this is one part where I consider Blizzard to have failed with the way Dragonriding works. Stamina is too easy to recover. In my opinion it would have been “better” if stamina was near-unrecoverable once you’re in the air, and require you to sit down and eat/drink food to recover it

I think they also have some kind of engagement metric now that records buttons pressed per minute or something like that. It feels very spammy.

I need one for worms.

But in wow they are not so disgusting as IRL

It’s better than removing them outright though it’s also just another step in the infantilisation of society. Though that’s been going on for quite some time ever since it became popular to ‘joke’ about burning a house down just because it had a spider in it.

I guarantee many of the same people pushing for it because it’s ‘progressive’ scoff at the idea of how beneficial it would be to promote a live and let live approach with spiders if for no other reason than how essential they are in terms of keeping pests at bay.

Sure, there’s a healthy balance to be struck and nobody should let their house be taken over by spiders but…it’s really not that difficult to get a glass and a bit of paper to safely transfer them outdoors. Especially if they’re not the dangerous sort…

What will happen with the multi-million gold spider mount? Will it become a makrura?

This is a very terrible comparison (to put it mildly)
A colorblind person can have issues identifying elements in the game’s UI, therefore colorblind mode is a legitimate accessibility tool.

Arachnophobia, as all phobias are ment to be confronted, voluntarily, in a safe environment (Like for example…a game)

When you shield a person completely from an irrational fear/phobia - You make said fear or phobia worse.

When you create a completely safe environment for a person you offer a false sense of security that cannot be found in the real world, so when a person encounter the trigger of the fear the reaction is even more violent.

This is an absolutely basic fact In psychotherapy.

Do I get a +1 in my mount achievement or not :(?

Sadly not :frowning:

Now you’re asking the real questions here xD

I really wish Blizzard would have added Nerubians as a way for Death Knight to raise as a minion. Then i could live out my dream of raising an army of crabs with arachnophobia filter turned on

To be honest I see the filter as a potential therapeutic tool for people who have that phobia. Exposure therapy or however it is called. But it needs to be treated as such then.

One thing is certain, you have little to no understanding. You’re like the parent that traumatises a child and gives them a worse fear by forcing them to do whatever their fear is. It’s nothing short of abusive and exacerbates any irrational fear.

Fortunately Blizzard has added this great new feature that will not harm your gaming in any way shape or form. Good on them.

We did it properly once, then all the other times we did the reset strat
