Idk, they changed ‘enslave demon’ a while ago before all this stuff came to light. I think it just sped up some of this stuff.
It’s hard to know why they are doing it. The court case would seem to be the obvious reason but it’s not really pleasing the player base going overboard. I have seen hints that it’s for the Devs/Staff.
Blizzard are unlikely to clarify either way so we are stuck with these bizarre renames and changes.
Consort seems a strange change to me. How can a consort be considered offensive? There are probably more of these to come, we’ll see.

This is the worst part about it, by the way. Instead of just ripping off the bandaid, they are releasing this info peacemeal just to generate more headlines and forum outrage.
Not just that. They changed their “Blacklist” into “Blocklist” in their game code.
You guys speak about Den of Mortal Delights being a problem. Soon the whole name of “Black Temple” will be a problem. Aswell as Blackrock Clan.
That’s far too much work for them. They are only changing names and pictures they already have.
I guess it’s not so much about the word “consort” but the concept of having two consorts.
I’m curious to know what they’re planning on doing with the Black Temple harem. Perhaps they’ll simply remove all those concubines and call it a day.

Imagine when they release BT on classic TBC and players charge towards Mother only to find the entire harem section empty.

Well, that’s loading the term consort, which as I said, doesn’t have necessarily sexual implications at all. The lore suggests that Lei Shen “supposedly” made them, because they were (at the time) the only female Mogu around. Beyond that nothing of their actual relationship to him (other than the fact they obviously have one) is hinted at beyond use of the term “consort”.
So i think interpreting it as “dude made sex dolls” is loading the term. For example Korialstrasz is Alexstaza’s consort, would you describe him as her sex doll?
At it’s core it means “companion”. So Lei Shen apparently “made himself a couple of companions”. The fact they’re female can imply several things:
- His purposes for them were sexual (nothing in game suggests this or hints at it)
- It was a show of arrogance/defiance of the titans because (at this point in the lore before Female Mogu were established to be a thing with the Rajani) Lei Shen had basically imitated the Titan’s creation process but left a unique mark on it and done something they didn’t/wouldn’t/couldn’t.
- it was to instill jealously in his subordinates and assert his place as leader as he had “something they can’t have”.
My money is on 3). Lei Shen was a brutal leader and extremely ruthless and didn’t treat Mogu who didn’t tow his line very well at all. So the idea he would take any opportunity to remind his underlings that he was the guy who could do what the titans could AND keep it for himself wouldn’t surprise me at all.
I think focusing on the aspect of him possibly having two wives/lovers (possibly, because as said consort doesn’t necessarily imply either) as being problematic is really weird. I mean Lei Shen’s lore clearly states he enslaved other races, worked them to death and prohibited them from knowing their own history in order to induct them into an existence of knowing only servitude to the Mogu. He prevented them speaking their own languages and forced them to speak the Mogu language. He essentially attempted to eradicate their individual cultures to subdue their spirits and have them believe “life under the Emperor was all there is”.
This stuff is more obviously problematic if I had to pick “what’s wrong with Lei Shen”. Then again, i don’t think anything is wrong with his depiction (he gets killed, he’s a cautionary tale) and I don’t get why they’re changing it and possibly pointing it towards the direction of “Lei Shen appointed female Mogu generals” as if to try and make him seem more affable?
Dude attempted to enslave an entire continent and engaged in imperialistic cultural cleansing. I don’t think having him display “right-minded” attitudes is necessarily going to bring anything to his character or enhance it. It just makes it possibly inconsistent. So long as we’re not depicting it graphically or describing it graphically, it think it’s okay for “bad guys” to have a possible hint of dodgey mindsets/behaviours that we “don’t think are okay”. I mean after all- that’s why they’re bad guys isn’t it?
Otherwise what are we saying? It’s alright to depict villains who engage in slavery and genocide but woe betide if we even remotely imply the villain might be a bit of a misogynist or sex fiend? That’s just weird to me. As said, we’re not talking about descriptions here, just a mere implication, a possibility. And yet we have described accounts in game of the slavery and brutality and killing?
Oh in that case it does actually. At least for him. They did the bee dance alright. A lot of times in fact. However he wasnt her only “partner”. He was however her most beloved one.
Blizzard appears to use the term consort in a sexual way. Especially when it comes to dragons. Given Sinestra was also regarded as Deathwings “consort” and we know that she was the only one capable of surviving the bee dance with him.
So for the Twin Consorts its most certainly the case that they are Lei Shens dance partners given how rare female mogu are to begin with as he quite literally created them. Also who knows what kinks the guy had.
They arent. They were his property however and he created them himself.
