Unannounced change to Token in Europe? - FIXED

So this morning Retail EU players found they’re now restricted to using Tokens ONLY to buy game time, and can no longer use it to add to Battle Net balance.

This is on accounts that have paid for a sub in the last 6 months with RL money.

The support pages don’t (yet) reflect the change.

I’ve not seen anything official so it could just be a bug.

I would do a bug report in game as well as this topic ofc.

Sure we’re not thinking of the classic token? would suck if they nerfed the 13 euro redeem

Can confirm I see the same thing ingame, we may get official news soon about this I hope for clarity.

Wowhead are also reporting on it

This is quite annoying if true, it was a gold sink that actually benefitted the player.

Token is not a gold sink…gold sink is something you pay gold to VENDOR, with token you are paying diffrent person

That’s assuming blizz isn’t generating tokens out of thin air and sells them to players for gold.

kinda wierd since the wow token in the shop still say the following:
“That’s why World of Warcraft players can exchange gold for game time or Battle.net Balance in a convenient and secure way using the WoW Token.”

A gold sink is anything that has a high gold cost and causes me to have less gold than I had before. Where I got the gold from, or where it goes, is immaterial to the spending.

Buying 30 days of game time, or something from the cash shop, without having to spend cash is a significant incentive to spend gold, hence a gold sink.

Given that this is something that’s still an option in the US, I suspect it’s a bug.

Is there some EU ruling I’m unaware of that could of brought about this change (like the loot boxes one in ow?)

According to google:

Gold sink is an economic process by which a video game’s ingame currency (‘gold’), or any item that can be valued against it, is removed.

ye i agree with you on that

From googling goldsink:
" A gold sink is a game mechanic that helps to control the inflation rate of the [in-game economy] Without various gold sinks, the developers would have no viable means of removing excess [money] from the game’s economy."

Litelarly its from 1st link, there are plenty of examples of goldsinks

One step closer to it’s removal. Great news.

The token will never be removed, as you well know.

Since it’s only EU that’s affected and not other parts of the world, I’m 100% certain it’s a bug. Removing tokens would likely be the end of WoW considering how many members of the core player base use them to top up their gold balance.

One can hope.

The end? It’d be a glorious end if that was the case, imagine not being able to just buy everything. What a glorious day.
