Why do so little play tanks?

I’m going take a stab in the dark here and say tank is probably the most under represented role in the game.

Why do you think that is?

I think being able to take hits from something that would rip through anything else is kind of cool.

Most responsibility out of all roles, people don’t like that.

Its a thankless job. I stopped playing tanking classes due to the toxicity of random players. People expect to much while providing to little in return.

You usually have 2 tank spots in a raid, 3-5 healers, the rest DPS. I figure that’s one of the reasons. The other being that PuGs are, in general, not very friendly towards tanks (or healers, or anyone else for that matter), doubly so if they’re new to the role.

You make one tiny mistake as a tank in a PuG, and all hell breaks loose. Quite a few will quickly reconsider their choice of role, or whether they want to PuG. In either case, the result is less tanks on the group finder.

too much responsibility is put on tanks in dungeons, and if they fk up it usually ends up in an entire group wipe which makes dps and healers mad > tank enjoyment goes down.

tanks also became a lot less tanky going from legion to bfa and it feels like tanks have yet again become even more squishy going from bfa to shadowlands. tanking is simply not very fun in the current state of the game

It’s not that there are a few tanks, it’s that most tanks don’t pug and prefer to play only with friends and guilds so pugs will always have a shortage of tanks and also healers. Because, the chance that the pug dps will be ninjapulling and blaming the tank for their own mistakes, is very high.

Tanks dont play with randoms. They find people that do what thet are supposed to, and stick to them.

Comunity : we have no tanks blizz do something

Also comunity : wtf tanks are doing so much dmg, why are they having fun? Also ban tanks in pvp thnks.

U ever tried to kill elite as tank? Like yea u cant die but so cant the elite.

Also

Group : tank post route

tank posts rotue

Group : thats a bad route, but we as a group wont provide a good one we wanna use, you are tank its your job, but u sux at it, but we wont help.

Group : wtf tank pull more

tanks pulls more

Group : wtf how did you die? leave key

I could go forever, but this can apply to all roles… But its pretty much comunity thing why there is so few tanks, imho.

because game is to hard for 80% of playerbase

here i said it.

yes imo game for years have been unnesesary made harder to please top 10%

you know why classic was so popular ? because it was very easy and slow game compared to SL

and no - not slow because of gear- slow and easy because bosses had like 1-2 mechanics that barely mattered .

Read the responses here if you wonder why people don’t play tanks.

some say tanking isnt very interesting or exciting but that is of course very subjective.

i suppose most people dont want the responsibility. pull too less or too little trash in m+ can maybe cost you a key upgrade or two. knowing routes and what to pull and/or not to pull can be quite daunting if you have four other people following and expecting you to know what you re doing at all times.

you need a fairly thick skin if you pug as tank as theres usually a “but im a 21343 rio tank dps alt and know everything better than you” guy, criticising every move you make. most people dont want to put up with all the crap and abuse that is thrown their way and i cant blame them.

i am leveling a tank right now and i already know for sure that i wont be tanking for pugs, i ll tank for guild mates and friends.

I’ll give it a read.

Because we are punching bags to pugs, they always knows better route and or how much capacity we have and so on. They don’t respect that tanks have different strategy than them! But still won’t they take on the role by the self! And so many dps don’t use they toolkit and just stand in everything and just push frost bolt! So many pugs that say: go go go go go go go you MF! You just get tired of the toxic players!

There are enough tanks, there are however a lot that do not run pugs due to, among other reasons, the hassle of bad DPS being bad and then blaming the tank and/or healer.

Tried rolling a tank several year ago, and hated it. People were so toxic it was insane. I appearently did everything wrong, mostly it was going too fast or going too slow. Waiting a little when the healer said “mb” and there was instant messages like “wtf are you waiting for, noob”. Hunters just loving to ninjapull when we already had enough to fight, and if we wiped in such situations it was always my fault. Etc.

Nope, not doing that again. Ever.

Well when my guild started doing the keys regularly a lot of people rolled an offtank or offheal to help others - thing is they only tanking for the guildies and almost never in pugs. Tanking is much more enjoyable when your team on the same page with you and can have a good laugh if something going not according to plan.

And even then we’r rotating people because tanking requires much more attention and concentration then DPS who’s only job is not standing in fire and kicking right yellow bar. And people in game for some unknown reason sometimes just want to relax.

No. If anything 80% of the player base is too slow to react, too used to out gearing and too bad at recognizing mechanics infront of them.

Like necro wake:
•Boss on platform and immune.
•Abomination casts hook.
Yet more people than not cant put 2 and 2 together.

I must agree with what allot of players are saying here.
Playing tank or healer with randoms is something I don’t enjoy.

I don’t know how to fix it but the issue I think is here is not that tanks and healers have too much responebilety But rather the DPS got non exept do Xdps and job is done.

If a tank take the wrong turn onec in a M+ its the tanks fault and not the rest for following, if someone died then teknickaly healer could just have heald more.

I didn’t tank much before, but since i’m almost entirely on my own these days, I started tanking so I might actually do some content, if I so choose to.

I have found tanking to be an interesting experience, but I have created a mindset that works so far. I go my own way and simply dont give a crab what others think.

I watch dps pull.
I watch dps choose paths.
I watch people do mythic meta in normals/heroics.
They complain when i pull groups they deemed not neccessary (be a tank yourself, if it offends you).
People do not listen to any guidance. I wont complain about it, if it just causes things to go slower, but its odd.

The list goes on. Probably half of the pug groups I get in dungeons, someone does something odd. I don’t really care much, though. Even if I get kicked, I get insta queues.
