Why is renown behind RNG?

Honestly, if we have to have a chore grind in, can it be a progress style bar like azerite or artifact power was?

I’m in this situation where I don’t know whether I’m capped on a certain amount on a catchup for that week, capped for a certain type of content, or the drop chance is just reducing, because as usual, Blizzard don’t communicate how this stuff works.

Honestly, is this just Ion thinking it’s “fun” to put something behind RNG because he grew up playing table top RPGs and thinks dice rolling is the model for literally everything? Is the lack of communication and leaving people guessing a ploy to hit some kind of metric/KPI they need to hit for making people spend a certain amount of hours a week running content they don’t want to do?

Can we just have some actual communication on how Renown catchups work, and how the caps/reducing drop chances work?

Open your Renown page, the one where it lists future renown levels. Hover over the renown level. It will tell you what kind of content you can get renown from.

How to earn Renown in patch 9.1 (blizzardwatch.com)

Hopefully your main started off Chains of Domination at Renown 40 — but what if they didn’t? And what about alts? Well, Shadowlands has those characters covered with catchup mechanics. These have been in Shadowlands since the early weeks, but have increased how much Renown they reward in patch 9.1 to ensure characters are flying through Renown levels and earning everything they need.

The first rule of Renown catch up is to just play the game. Doing activities rewards Renown, even activities that don’t normally reward it. Threads of Fate while leveling, completing dungeons, and the callings in the Covenant Sanctums — all of these will reward Renown. All of the new quests in Korthia and the Maw will reward Renown too, if you’re not at the previous maximum of 40.

Additionally, in the new patch, there’s something behind the scenes called, “Rapid Renown Catchup,” which just means that more Renown is rewarded. The specifics are vague, but players should earn more Renown up to 40. Theoretically, bosses that had a chance to drop Renown will drop it more often or offer more Renown than before. This Blizzard forum post has players saying the Threads of Fate quests now rewards three Renown instead just one, and quests for the campaign were giving two instead of one Renown.

The Renown is out there. The only hard part is to not dread thinking about the grind. Blizzard is trying to take out the grind — from 0 to 40 at least, and then putting in the new time-gated grind from 41 to 80. But, really, isn’t that kinda why we’re here — to earn levels and watch numbers go up.

I mean searching the forums first before you posts would have helped you anyways which you should do if you follow the forums CoC .

Prior to renown level 44 you get renown from basically ANY activity: Dungeons, callings and world quests in some rare cases as well as recovering 1000 anima and returning souls from the maw.

After you reach 44 or whatever you can only get renown from the 1K anima quest and the weekly Korthia: stopping the jailer’s forces" or whatever it’s called. Literally no RNG involved.

No, it’s your lack of the ability to read and learn as you play… Considering it’s literally there in black and white.

You are misinformed in this case and thus your argument is moot.

Figuratively.

At some point I think they need to add some instant renown catchup, because grinding 80 lvls(or maybe 120 in 9.2) on a new character would be extremely boring and time consuming.

Yeah, or at least they need to allow us to get to 80 by doing dungeons, raids, Thorghast, etc.

I don’t want to do Korthia or Maw stuff.

You can though, you can renown up fom anything (that drops renwon obviously) till the cap -2. I’ve not touched korth or the maw in a very long time on my main and he’s 64ish renown. All he does is keys and that’s it. Theoretically you only have to do the jailor weekly and anima weekly once at 78 to finish it. If you don’t mind having -2 renown from cap.

Beacuse every progression in wow is rng

It really isn’t behind RNG much anymore now.

I just got my alt priest to 60 yesterday and she is already at renown 38 from doing the stuff being thrown at me and a few world quests. I didn’t dungeon or PVP grind her. Just done the pickups at covenant base.

A lot of the stuff even gives you 2 renown as a reward whereas before it would only give you 1 renown as a reward.

Essentially the further behind you are it throws Renown at you and the closer you get the slower the drops.

Tbh until 40 it should drop with 100% as that is obsolete content. Preferably 2 from a heroic dungeon already (just like callings already grant 2). After that it can start to slow down for all i care.

At least renown is possible to catchup, not sure about CN legendaries, queue times for lfr are probably going to be extremely big.

I would love to see them just stick in a bypass to 40, like we had with Artifact Power in Legion. An alt would just jump up and not have to grind from scratch. In BfA we had could unlock Nazjatar and skip to a point in Azerite Power levels (I forget the exact number off the top of my head).

Wing 1: 30min average
Wing 2: 16min average.
Wing 3: Didnt even get an estimate
Wing 4: 1hr average.

However lfr queues are to be taken with a grain of salt. Or “you farm it catchup memories with the codex faction because thats gonna be fun” or whoever sells that memory thing. Might even be Anima i believe.

Yes.

Edit: 50

Not even that, because a few weeks after 80 unlocks, you’ll be able to reach the cap without doing those two weeklies.

fantastic. after 11 months we’ll be allowed to have alts without having to do a massive grind first thing after we finish grinding to level 60.
I don’t mind multiple dimensions of progression besides ilvl but for the love of thrall don’t make them time/grind gated. it’s just a moronic design and I’d prefer to actually PLAY MY CHARACTER instead.

You can do that too. Renown is only gated by the current cap, and that’s gated for your main. You can catch up in about a week if you want to. The last time I did a renown catchup, I went 1-55 in two afternoons of casual (but focused) play. 55 only because that was the current cap at the time.

The beautiful thing about renown is that you can earn it however you wish, at any pace you want.

You want it fast? You can do that, by doing activities that grant renown! These include Torghast, Callings, PvP, Dungeons (normals, heroics, mythic, and keys), raids (of any difficulty) and the covenant & Korthia campaign, and the weekly quests on top of all those.

You want to do it without doing questing? You can do that, do whatever content you fancy, and you’ll eventually catch up.

You want something in between? You can do that, too.

I did not know that is a thing. Have to say, this is a pretty awesome addition.

yes it’s great and the only way they can make renown better is by deleting it, which is essentially what happens in 9.1.5
I wouldn’t mind grinding renown from random HC. in cata after you dinged, you spend a few days gearing for HC, then spamming them until you could raid. the difference is the current random HC are absolute total TRASH. watered down unimaginative, uncompelling garbage and M+ is a zoo. so all that’s left as endgame for alts is normal raid maybe, which does require you to finish korthia, covenant campaign and renown at least
