Why is /yell *Gunshot!* hated?

Just ignore it. Its trash tier, and the City Guards would react, all your character has to do is fling themselves behind cover. Anyone who claims the guards don’t exist who would defend the city is going a little bit off message… You have Orgrimmar Grunts, Darkspear Headhunters, and Tauren Braves. I’m pretty sure they can deal with a threat…

The crowd panics and runs in all directions like roaches. Gojira!

Your reminder Perroy RPs Guards pretty mercifully considering one quest in Orgrimmar has you go about mercilessly killing thieves looking to steal rations.

“We have had a problem with thieves stealing our infantry rations here in Orgrimmar for the last couple of weeks. I recently received some intelligence of where these crimes are taking place. Anywhere you see piles of crates and supplies, there are likely to be thieves nearby. I need you to hunt these thieves down and recover the stolen rations. Return to me when you are done.”

Funfact: this is infact a crime of many multitudes.
Not only do you steal rations from the horde.
You also undermine the horde by stealing their rations.
Which also can be seen as an act of treason.
Now that you undermined, betrayed and stolen from the horde, you are being properly executed, which is also a crime as you the ration stealing wastrel commit another crime, littering to make it worse you also cause civil unrest as your death might shock and frighten bystanders as you the thief are slaughtered.

Actually, the NPC’s will always support me because i will emote them to be in my favor of obviously. And anyone doing based guard rp where you can actually get a decent and possibly good interaction should feel ashamed of themselves from stopping me in emoting guard NPC’s saving my backend from consequences.

I think there clearly is, in most cases, apart from the crooked ones. I mean if you are the one who starts an offence, in clear sight of an NPC guard, they’re going to come down on you, not your victim That’s just basic common sense. That’s the person playing the wrongdoer just being a bit daft, not excepting that their actions, if done in front of guards, even NPC ones, will just go unnoticed. That’s powergaming. I mean to assume otherwise is to assume that every guard just stands impassively whilst people attack each other, or are all corrupt, both of which are ridiculous premises.

Or, and here is a crazy idea, people shouldn’t start fights in front of guards in plain sight, and should actually -roleplay-their enmities. I mean to be honest, that is what Roleplay is. Playing a Role in a defined setting. That defined setting has guards. You break the law in front of them, well, You’re not exactly playing to the setting. Crime is fine, but it should be -clever- crime, not Johnny Eyepatch pulls out a blunderbuss in front of guards Shoots people, and Boing Ninja flips onto a rooftop and makes his escape. That Scenario would more be like ‘Johnny Eyepatch pulls out a blunderbuss, and is instantly bodychecked by two burly guards wearing full plate, who keep him pinned’ But hey, I just like people to roleplay these things.

IC Guards are equally dangerous, Stormwind is a good example, the amount of drama between Guard Guilds and “But…Psycho Killers exist in real life! So I’ma play one and not get caught” Is just insane. It leads to players making up laws, stifling roleplay, or a ridiculous escalation “I am the will of the High King/Warchief!”
No mate, you’re not. We are all so far down the pecking order it is untrue.

Guard RP -can- work, when approached sensibly. Swarming people is not sensibly, I mean that stage you’re more likely to hit your fellow footman, than whoever you are trying to apprehend (I don’t mean the -Guild- Footman, I mean your basic Stormwind soldier), it also relies on give and take, from both sides, Anyone playing a Guard type is not Omniscient, and the Criminal types, No you do not have a blackbelt in Ninjamatics…Unless you’re a Monk…Maybe…

Its just Slack when people don’t take the gameworld into consideration at times.

Isn’t that the same guy who gets you to steal Horde rations in Orgrimmar, you know, the Rice? I’m sure it is, the guy who gets you to steal from your fellow Horde…

Hmm…Something is not quite right here…

You steal it from civilian trolls, aye.

He steals the Rice to create food for the Horde army.

" As you know, <name>, Garrosh has relegated the trolls of Orgrimmar to the western outskirts of the city. Fortunately, that means that we have easy access to their supplies.I am working on a large batch of jambalaya for the infantry and I need as much rice as possible. Lucky for us, the trolls keep it stored in barrels near their structures. Retrieve these barrels of Darkspear rice for me and I should be able to finish up."

A) Yes they are loud, but in a city like Stormwind (which is the place it is most frequently used, if not the only place) it would be far from the only loud noise. Plenty of mechanical noises, church bells ringing, people singing, gryphons screeching, ship horns sounding etc. to go around. A /y gunshot is very “in your face” and disruptive.
B) It doesn’t really create RP. As I stated, logically speaking there would be a lot of loud noises and /y gunshot is just another one. The only way it creates RP is if you state from what direction the sound is coming (which wouldn’t be far fetched, even in a crowded city like Stormwind), which is something that never happens. Many times I have tried whispering people who do the /y gunshot and ask them from where the sound would be coming and there’s not even always a reply.

How would they react? Is there any official Blizzard guidebook on various situations / the related reaction? :policeman:

Nobody (who is worth roleplaying with) pretends major cities are unguarded - the point is that some people prefer to interact with player guards instead of having people argue about what they think the guards would do. There are no Blizzard DMs to control NPCs so ultimately it is always player a’s big headcanon vs player b’s big headcanon :man_judge:

How do you decide if they’ve spotted you? What if the situation isn’t obvious re. who the criminal / victim is? What kind of punishment do they apply to the crime?

The answer to all these questions is: “my headcanon = they would do x” and x usually happens to (mysteriously) favour the player in question’s character

I would argue with you that it’s powergaming to try to impose your vision for what random NPCs would do on others. If you ask two different people about how Orgrimmar Grunts deal with theft, you will get two different answers (as seen in this thread)

yea… true :white_check_mark:

Sure, but roleplaying with NPCs isn’t fun - and to claim that (for example) Orgrimmar has guards that never leave their posts and just stand in the same spot eternally isn’t mega immersive (NPCs don’t leave to eat / sleep / don’t ever end their shifts)

It is more conductive to roleplay to keep the guards in mind (ie. not do loads of big crimes out in the open / RP getting away with it because no guard RPers are around) but leave the actual execution of the cops/robbers RP to other players

Obviously if you want to really weirdly roleplay with a static / unmoving NPC and find that fun that’s based / I’m glad but I’m not personally very hyped for that

What if Johnny Eyepatch first roleplayed bribing the guards and emoted the guards nodding to him grimly and then tackling your character for a cut of the gold?

There have definitely been crooked guard NPCs in this game - his controlling the guards as emote fight pawns would be just as legitimate as yours in terms of the setting :money_mouth_face:

So you’re against players making up laws but for emoting what guards would do (presumably in adherence to some laws you have deduced exist)? Am I missing some distinction?

I don’t consider this a very consistent opinion either. The character you are posting on isn’t far down in any pecking order - on one hand you appear to roleplay (one of?) the leaders of the Silvermoon air force and also a character so legendary as to be immune to prosecution who has the authority to deploy weapons with a payload that can :boom:wipe out :boom: hundreds upon hundreds of

footmen (who are dangerous!) but also find it weird when people roleplay city watch captains that roleplay having a lawbook that they follow. Feels like a big case of “It’s OK when I do it”

True :white_check_mark:

looks at the camera :camera_flash: :eyes:

Well they’re not just going to sit there, are they. I mean they are guards for a reason, to keep the peace and protect the citizenry. They’re not going to be having a casual chat “Hey Footman Bob, hows the wife?”
"Oh she’s doing fine, we’re-
/Yell GUNSHOT
“Must be a Saturday again, so yeah, we’re trying for another kid”
“Say, Bob, is that guy over there bleeding from a gunshot wound?”
“Looks like it, so where you going on holiday this year?”

Crime is good, if it is clever crime, not dumb crime.

Oh for sure, it is much more fun interacting with a person, than an NPC that just isn’t going to respond apart from “Kings Honour, Friend” and nobody can control what the guards do, but there are realistic expectations, and a lot of people simply ignore the guards and start fights plainly under their gaze…I mean that’s not going to end well. Doesn’t mean the person being attacked can emote the Guards, as that -is- powergaming, but equally the attacker should be going “Hmm, There’s guards, how about I lure this person to somewhere there aren’t guards and then attack”
Like I say, Clever Crime, not Dumb Crime.

Well that’s pretty obvious if someone initiates an attack in front of guards, I mean they would -know- who the aggressor was, they’d just seen it. The exception would be if there were no Guards to see the start of the kerfuffle, and then a one of the wandering guards comes along, then there would be an element of doubt, sure.

Agreed, which is why people shouldn’t emote for NPC Guards, but equally, why people shouldn’t Ignore NPC Guards.

That what I’m saying. Its more fun to deal with other players, but by the same token, stupid crime is still stupid, so as you say, not do loads of big crimes out in the open.

Then that is something Johnny Eyepatch should have whispered you (the Victim) about, at which point said Victim is “Awwh Damn, guess I’m scuppered” and unless the attacker is actually trying to kill them, just take the rap, However, the idea that -all- guards are bribable is just mad.

Errmm, No? Players making up laws is obviously bad (Can I see your Warlock License?) but equally so is emoting what the guards would do.
I think we’re at cross purposes here. Emoting for NPC Guards is Bad, Being a criminal committing an offence blatantly in front of Guards is equally Bad. I mean who goes “Oh, there’s a couple of policemen over there, never mind, I’ll mug this guy in front of them anyway” The Onus is very much on the Criminal, not the Victim, to have the scenario make sense, otherwise I think it is pretty reasonable for the Victim to whisper them and go “Seriously? Dude, there are like four guards watching us?”

To give an example with Orgrimmar, if you mug someone in the Valley of honour, on the main street, that is Stupid Crime. If however, you wait for your target to go round the side of the Wyvern’s Tail, (Not that damned Tree side) then no Guards will see you. Perfect time to pounce, no one will see you bar a few Forsaken refugees who you can instantly threaten if they blab.

He really is far down on the pecking order…He’s a Wing Commander, there are Six others, to be precise, an Oversight Committee, and only then does it revert to normal military procedure where he is still low down the food chain.
And you think he was immune to prosecution? What his own people did to him was far worse. He was Prosecuted, just sitting there for hours when the guard players had wandered off, was not fun. If you’re going to RP as Guards, then -do- it. Actually RP it out. Don’t just go “You’re in jail” then wander off to go and enjoy RP elsewhere, when having restricted someone else’s RP. That’s not how it works. RP is a collaborative hobby, the instant you lock down someone else’s and don’t have the decency to interact with them is the instant someone can just go “Right, you’re not taking this seriously” So yeah, he got Extradited, and a horrible punishment that causes him great difficulties dealing with Sin’dorei
, Shal’dorei and Mages of any race.

Ahem, if you do the Isle of Thunder PvP quests, you will find out what level of authority is needed to use -Tactical- Mana Bombs. And it was 100 Footmen, a Relief column, and all NPCs, therefore having no effect on actual players or victory conditions, unlike the Alliance Mana Weapon(Which was used first, I may add) , which strangely -was- allowed to target players, outright killing two Sun Hawks, and crippling Brigante for life. You were the campaign organiser, and you were fine with the Alliance using that weapon and it hitting players. We bombed NPC’s with no impact on the campaign whatsoever, so…It’s OK when I do it? Not really a charge you can level at me.

But yeah, I do find it weird when people claim to have a lawbook, when we don’t know what the laws are… again “Can I see your Warlock License citizen”

What, they take your hand? In like a romantic way…I had no idea they were such softies…Awwh, next one I see gets a big hug “Its OK big guy, we appreciate all you do”

TL:DR
First of all lots of words aren’t scary, secondly, Emoting for guards is Dumb, Committing Crimes blatantly in front of Guards is Dumb. Making up Rules that contradict canon Lore is Dumb. The Elephant with big ears who can fly is Dumb…Oh, no …wait, that was Dumbo…

It’s really cool if it has changed since I was in the guild, but previously, and many times in your guild thread you refer to Brigante as the Commandant of the Aerie

As the leader of the Air Force Quel’thalas, you seem to be pretty far up the food chain. Or that is at the very least the impression you’ve given everyone with your cool stories.

And so on and so forth…

Feel free to correct me though.

Maybe we just need an educational video to the inner workings of the Thalassian Air F orce, the structure and what-nots.

Yeah, so he is , by virtue of being the Wing Commander of the First Escadrille, in charge of the Aerie, which is one facility. If someone set up another Dragonhawk rider guild, they would equally be Commandant of -their- Aerie. Commandant isn’t as high a title as you seem to think.

Alrighty then…

Oh good grief no… He isn’t in charge, he’s just the chap at that level. Is the person in charge of I.T the Manager of the company?

As you well know, the next highest rank from Ranger Captain is Ranger Lord. Annoyingly Blizz have not given us any idea who these people are, apart from Lor’themar Theron who held that title before he was lofted to the status of Regent Lord, so obviously is massively above that.
I didn’t want Brigante to be so high ranked that he answered to a Ranger Lord directly, hence there is the whole Aerie Council thing. He’s not a unilateral commander, he can and has, been overruled, before it ever got to Ranger Lord level. Remember, the Aerie is the base of the offensive aerial units that project force beyond the nations border, not the ones who defend Quel’thalas, so he’s not ‘in charge’. It is no more bizarre than a High Executor, or the various Lords of places no one has heard of and aren’t on a map that one encounters in Stormwind.

That would actually be awesome, sadly, I do not know how the entire structure works, just that bit that applies to me and my guild… Because I can’t impose any authority over and above that, you see. Some people -think- they can, but ultimately a Guild leader can only control their Guild, and even then, it is by mutual consent. If other guilds choose to serve that guild, then that is their choice, Its all character driven. But no, get this idea that Brigante is the person in charge of -all- of Quel’thalas’ aerial assets out of your head, that has never been the case, and still is not. Never was when you were in the guild, still isn’t now.

I don’t know how much plainer I can make that…

Please don’t impose authority over me. :poop:

Happy to concede on that. I’ve always gotten the impression there there’s a single Aerie. Reasoning being that it’s the only one, that one being yours, ever referenced, because there is no canonical aerie in Quel’danas to speak of.

is as high a title as you make it, in that, it’s by definition the leader of particular force or institution. That’s kind of the issue with using titles is that they can be interpreted differently.

I’ve always found this curious, there are people who claim high ranks or titles, but tend to be commanders of NPC’s effectively. I’ve always been of the opinion that higher powered ranks could and should be accessible to players, if they pull it off, have the means to showcase the force, which brings us to this…

and I’ll try to steer us back on topic, authority in WoW RP actually cannot be imposed. Authority is given by the players who interact with one another. Grunts in Orgrimmar have so far worked because they’ve not really abused their power, and have treated both criminals and law-abiding citizens fairly.

I’ve gotten the impression that it is not the case for Stormwind, there gunshots, guard and criminal RP have a plethora of over-used cliches and taboo subject, which have turned people off from interacting with one another.

Overall, I do find that player-driven guard / criminal is the way to go, guard NPC’s are cute, but honestly, they may as well be ignored. They’re not placed in a viable fashion from IC PoV. Imagine having equal or double the guards to other NPC’s.

The Guard NPC’s for the most part have been put there to serve as PvP stallers should the opposing faction invade.

For role-players, they serve as a cute backdrop, but little more than that. Ofcourse the criminal role-player, or

should choose their surroundings appropriately when committing a crime, but relying on locations that guard NPC’s don’t visit is not really great.
