Why are we going with this?

On my main this expac(and previous ones) i can:
- play my main spec effectively in raids
- play my main spec effectively in M+
- play my main spec effectively in random bg’s
- play my main spec effectively in arenas
- play my main spec effectively while doing dailies
- play my main spec effectively while doing old raids
- could play my off spec effectively in raids
- could play my main off effectively in M+
- could play my main off effectively in random bg’s
- could play my main off effectively in arenas
- could play my main off effectively while doing dailies
- could play my main off effectively while doing old raids

On my main in Shadowlands i can:

  • play my main spec effectively in raids
  • play my main spec at reduced effectiveness in M+
  • play my main spec at reduced effectiveness in random bg’s
  • play my main spec at reduced effectiveness in arenas
  • play my main spec at reduced effectiveness while doing dailies
  • play my main spec at reduced effectiveness while doing old raids
  • could play my off spec at reduced effectiveness in raids
  • could play my off spec at reduced effectiveness in M+
  • could play my off spec at reduced effectiveness in random bg’s
  • could play my off spec at reduced effectiveness in arenas
  • could play my off spec at reduced effectiveness while doing dailies
  • could play my off spec at reduced effectiveness while doing old raids

Why?
Because of Covenants and Conduits locks. So unless your class/spec gets really lucky for some of these things to coincide for multiple areas (looking at you rogues with your NecroLORDs Bonespike), this is what’s going to happen.

In BFA when you were optimized for raids then you was underwhelming in M+ and opposite, single target setup or AoE setup, maybe BM hunter could keep up with the same build, but for M+ and Raids people needed different setups.

The point is that i can change my talents, essences, azerite gear, corruptions gear to fit the situation in BFA right now. I can 100% cater within my class/spec for full effectiveness.

In Shadowlands i can’t do so with Covenants and Conduits. This is due to switching being time-gated.
For example i can’t switch from ST raid conduits, to AOE conduits for M+… or defensive conduits for arenas, to movement related conduits for dailies and old raids.

You dream of this scenario where you’re gearing 6 different characters in a world with vastly less loot.

What scenario? I will use the gear i have for all of that content, regardless of how it’s slower to get or not.
This is separated from Conduits and Covenants being time-gated.

Right, so the game is telling you to make choices and sacrifices to get your character to where you want it to be.

You will find that you can do quite well in all of these activities even if you’re only fully optimal in one of them.

So make your choice. WoW never was and should not try to be a Starcraft-level competitive game. It’s all about preparation, and allowing yourself to never make long-term investment and preparation and to just swap everything on the fly defeats the very purpose of those choices and turns it all into a bunch of macros.

I honestly can’t understand why the talent system, for instance, is the way it is. Why not have it all at once? There are no investments and no choices in that system, and what Blizzard didn’t want to do is have you fiddle with another one of these awful systems.

The game till Shadowlands permitted my character to be the best it can be within its class/spec. This is a paradigm shift which i and many others do not like.

And i can do an M15 now without any talents selected at all and time it.
It doesn’t mean i want to.

Wrong, i could do all that from start to BFA.

Because they are there to be options for choosing. You don’t have the all at once cause of gameplay reasons… the character would be OP and balance would be even more fickle.

It’s a return to form, that’s what it is.

In vanilla it cost 50g to change spec if you kept doing it repeatedly. That was like 2-3 hours of farming herbs.

Another example of this is deciding which items to keep in your bags.

In this case you haven’t made a choice at all.

Wrong. So, so very wrong.

What choice? Did you choose anything? Did you invest in anything?

(Hint: No)

You’re just fiddling with UI panels for 5 seconds before every fight. That’s not a choice.

You know what a real choice is?

  • Professions
  • Race
  • Class

You have NEVER been allowed to switch these without huge investment. Stop pretending these mechanics have never existed; it makes you look stupid.

And it was an option. Right now i’m required to wait 1-2 weeks.

I made my choice for the activity that i’m doing at the time.

Sure man, you keep thinking that.

Invest? Go to the damned stock market if you want to invest.

I invest time and effort into my character to play the game how I want it to.

So why do you give a flask what i’m doing?
Go play your own game how you want and don’t talk to me how i play mine.

Professions are just for gold making and some specific percs, the character power is minimal… who cares?

Yes, they are permanent (except race switch witch can be PAID for). That is a real choice, these Covenants and Conduits are NOT PERMANENT. So your argument goes against you.

I don’t care about switching those. If you want to switch those go make your own thread.

And why tf do you care how me and others are playing the game?
Do you pay my subscription to tell me how to play?
No? Then go away.

I invested the time into getting multiple gear sets optimized for different purposes so that I can be as affective as possible wherever I happen to be. It didn’t happen over night… it’s literally the long term investment you are talking about. But somehow the ability to eventualy become optimal in multiple areas is suddenly equal to “Starcraft-level competitive game” or “Overwatch with raids” now?

That’s like saying you shouldn’t be able to start practicing guitar once you become good at playing the violin to eventually become good a both.

Funny how they keep bringing that up like it’s some kind of GREAT thing that we lost along the way.
It was a useless, but grindeable in a short time restriction.

We don’t have that now… why? Because the players want to be able to switch freely.

Seems like a matter of perspective.
Your perspective is that right now you can play your mains effectively and in SL you won’t be able to. I disagree, your main will still be your strongest and most effective character. Everyone will be in the same Covenant issue boat as your main, so it’s really quite relative.

My perspective is right now your alts are unplayable.
I’ll take a weaker main for playable alts any day.

in bfa you could swap your azerite/talents/essecnes without too much friction. If you wanna do the same in sl you have to wait 1 week for conduits/ 3 weeks for covenant

You haven’t chosen anything. You know what the optimal is for a fight. You don’t have to weigh anything against another thing.

Boss is an AoE fight? Pick the AoE stuff. Next one isn’t? Don’t. Ezpz. You haven’t made choices in how you built a character at all in that system. Your “choice” is on a level with choosing which potion to drink, not how your character was built or who it is.

And those investments pay off in character progression.

Now you get to choose your investment instead of having it dictated to you by Blizzard.

“What a bloody disaster! Choice? In my RPG’s?! Get outta here.”

We’re playing the same game.

Hmm… wonder what those “specific perks” do.

There are loads of them who help you in combat, travel, and many other things.

That’s basically Blizzard’s desperate attempt to appease people who don’t want to play RPG’s. If it were me designing this game I’d have given you the finger and designed an RPG, no offence. It’s an MMORPG.

I don’t want to switch them either, but since the dawn of time there’s been people who think they want to do that, and now you’re all here again crying your eyes out.

Tell you what? Your Paladin isn’t optimal for every activity in the game already. It’s not the best choice in M+, for instance.

Because I have to live with the consequences of your ideas. If you allow people to change covenants 24/7, I will need to change mine, too, because if I don’t I’ll have social stigma against me.

And you made an order in which you got them, and some of them you never got at all because you ran out of time for the tier.

By the time you’re done the next tier rolls around.

My main, in my main area will be the same effectiveness.

I do multiple forms of CONTENT, you see right there? I’ve written all that for you to actually read it, multiple forms of CONTENT that my and others effectiveness will be REDUCED in.

So no, i can’t play my MAIN like i used to.

I read what you wrote, did you read what I wrote or did you see I disagreed with you and decided that the only way that is possible is if I didn’t understand you?

I am saying everyone will be in the same situation, no one is going to be the most effective they can be in all content (except for maybe a few choice specs if Blizzard really messed up balancing).

So yes, you’ll not be as effective in BGs and Dungeons as you are right now. But that scenario applies to everyone else, so the expectancy / standards for “efficiency” will be naturally lowered.

Again, as I said I don’t think that’s really an issue. I’d prefer that design over what we have now.
