You know what’s funny? If you watch the video in question, you’ll see that Bellular’s opinion is quite reasonable, as is in fact the SuperData communique on the matter.
Exactly that, even if blizz makes best content possible, there will be still a lot of people who leave after doing story, because they are not interested in grinding gear or cosmetics.
Puny is basically saying that WE (playerbase AND blizz) are used to money grab business model wow has been using for years now. lets jebait players with cool cinematic so they stay subbed for 2-3 months and then let the degens whine on forums cause we dont care. we made enough money so Bobby can host annual midget battle royale at activision HQs so everything is fine.
Not about anyone specific but some content creators always seem very negative about the game, it’s as if they hate that they make their living that way. Or they’ve long lost interest but they are expected to do it. Others seem overly positive. I don’t really find either approach very objective.
I have hated that Blizz have chased MAUs for two expansions introducing all these make you play metrics. I’m so glad we’ve moved away from that and the bulk of my time in game is spent enjoying the game, not doing chores that are required.
You can declare your own opinion at any time. But you are so far off base you don’t get to claim to have any idea what my opinion is.
Oh, yea, I get what you mean. But the clickbaity title aside, Bellular (who got the " HALF of WoW Players Have QUIT!" title in question from which these threadmakers are inspired) actually has a very measured approach to the topic. It’s almost like these people making threads managed to only actually see the title and never actually got past the first 2 minutes of his actual video. The downside of modern day media I suppose.
It wasn’t lost.
I wouldn’t go so far as they want it “to be dying”, but certain game designers, who took over not so long ago, definitely seem to not care about losing part of their audience.
I never claimed that:) I just interpreted what you said. Obviously a lot of people will unsub but I honestly think that 40% after 3 months should raise a red flag
Money grabbing? I can show u what a real money grabbing mmorpg is if u care to go look. Cause trust me wows no where near the surface of that.
Wow ain’t perfect, nor is blizzard and we all have dislikes about where the games gone. But I wouldn’t call it money grabbing.
Business is built on advertisement and encouraging people to buy your product. Blizzard just do art really well. And people return because this is their childhood the nostalgia will always bring em back for a while.
SL has done some things right, it’s gone to far with other things. Hopefully we see improvements and the expansion does well but who knows. 🤷🤷
I mean to be completely honest I still think that we get amazing content for 14 eur a month. I wouldnt be subbed if I thought Im not getting enough content for my money. Blizzard has an impossible task aka meeting playerbase expectations. I dont play any single player games. Last single player game I played was RDR2 and before that GTAV as I like to compete against/play with other people. It just sucks that wow has very little solo content to do inbetween raids.
I’ve been hearing how the game is dying from the day I started. Some didn’t even like the first expansion. It’s just a recurring theme.
However, in this instance I fail to see how it is dying if it’s retaining the same number of players after the surge has dropped off. However Youtubers want to grab your attn. A title saying ‘subs dropped to pre new expansion surge numbers’ it wouldn’t really grab much attn. I honestly see no point in denying that numbers surge for new expansions and new patches.
If there is too much stuff in an expansion that I don’t like or makes it unplayable or unenjoyable I just unsub. It is very unlikely I’m going to like absolutely everything in an expansion. People just have to weigh up if there is enough to hold their interest or is it time to take a break and find something else to play.
Everyone likes to presume because I’m an MVP that I just love and like and support everything. It’s as if people never actually read what I post, but that is never going to change.
Even though it is somewhat expected that retention is always lower than the initial sales it is quite surprising still that the numbers are not quite proportional, quite the opposite. It simply means that developers cannot conjure a magic recipe anymore that keeps returning players engaged with their game for much longer than a major patch cycle.
I am not concerned, though. The truth is that WoW isn’t structured around dynamic character activities like some smaller competitors are. The main activities are still rigidly positioned around raiding, M+ and PVP because the core concept is that rigid. That’s been like that for years. Any game that doesn’t re-invent itself at some point and expands its type of activity hubs eventually suffers from a steady decline and loss of retentive potential especially among those who don’t want to participate in these activities and just experience the storylines once before quitting. They could have turned Torghast and the Maw into these new activities, but the Maw serves your weekly Renown gain and overall Torghast, Torghast serves M+ and raiding which means there is a point where the service of these two areas are no longer required. Therefore, their potential got hampered from the get-go.
Another contributing factor on the side is that World of Warcraft is major competition in terms of social networking and gaming as a whole, as well as platforms to play on. This sixteen-year-old behemoth just can’t stand against the blockbusters of the last years, e.g. Fortnite, that divvied up the market and spread the amount of player time and revenues even further.
I think for an expansion that had banked on sales rather than long-term subscriber counts it did well. So, they have to capitalize upfront because they sure know that in the long-term players have many more options outside of WoW to spend their time and money on.
thats cause youre a green puny elfish tree hugger but we all know that you actually work for Blizzards top secret service.
p.s. honestly i dont know whats going on, i just read your post and had to troll a bit…sorry
I’m affectionately called the ‘Blizzard Shill’ by my friends and guildies and they are always asking me to get in touch with Ion
And once you have the gear and have half a brain you can do the content while the rest of us play gambling in las vegas every week. If you outgear content and have half a brain then content becomes trivial at that point. Pay to win. Buy token. Buy gear. Do content. Get achieves and then demand that the rest of us have that achieve that you got by means of real life cash.
Have to admit. I think this is something borrowed powers used to fill.
Visions, uldum and vale gave us content aswell as the neck gave us reason to do extra reps etc etc
I think it was a oversight on their behalf not to do anything at all to really replace those things with new systems for solo world content
I think that is because they would have started developing SL properly as BFA launched so at the time they thought after legion borrowed powers were the way forward
Ofcourse when BFA went south they likely deleted alot of the open world borrowed power progression etc etc and have failed to really fill the void.
Which is likely why we’ve ended up with WQs without much meaning to them, callings which is only good for renown catch up. And maw filled with monsters and no rewards or objectives.
SL feels like it has had stuff ripped out of it, I just don’t think they wanted to come out and say they had cut that content as it would prolly send us all into WoD PTSD.
All I can say is 9.1.5 needs to really address the open world content if they don’t get it in during 9.1. because the instances are good I am enjoying m+ alot more then I was.
Just the solo content needs a amp. We need another suramer style or something.
And the mage tower was actually fun and challenging when it released. You had to use the whole kit of your class.
(At least for the classes that i did)
No, they obviously banned the bots hence half a population is gone. I haven’t seen a single bot since then, prove me wrong. Well done Blizzard-Activision company!
Basically people can’t tell the difference between WoW being terrible, and themselves wanting something that isn’t WoW.
Sometimes you just don’t feel like WoW. That’s fine. Doesn’t mean WoW will die. Take a break, it’ll be there when you get back, in a week, a month, or a year.
(Which isn’t to say that there aren’t good and bad times for WoW. Just that it isn’t dying.)
