Heyyyy we agree on something.
Well I did say without the nudity and profanity so there really should not be an issue.
I really appreciated a little nudity and profanity when I was a kid.
Ah, growing up in the 80’s. What a time.
Well we got away with it back then because our parents believed children should be heard and not seen. Sure we in the TV room watching Blue Lagoon so we must be safe and well behaved.
After Tah’s comment I suddenly had flashbacks to watching that. And Schatjes. I vaguely remember nudity everywhere! I had parents who were wholly unconcerned about it all
Play BG3 and cyberpunk xD
Oh yeah, in Europe in that period there was nudity (a lot of it not sexualized too, it was just more normal and common) and profanity (to a degree) on tv all the time.
I also have memories of going to the videostore with my best friend and giggling at the pictures on videoboxes in ‘the forbidden section’.
MUDs are the grandpas of MMOs!
I remember there was lots of latenight softcore on tv in germany, that kinda vanished, probably because everbody has internet now.
With the caveat that “toxic masculinity” is an overdone catch-all term with many interpretations, there are elements of his character that were problematic from an in-universe point of view. He did grow as a character however and even came around to believing that Anduin’s world view was better than his own, older one.
To list a few examples of the character’s issues however:
- He was initially a hot headed buffoon. On the steps of the Lich King’s fortress and a looming battle for the world ahead of the Alliance forces there, he still couldn’t resist the urge to pick fights with the Horde.
. - His trauma of being enslaved as a gladiator made him fully opposed to any and all diplomatic options for some time. Didn’t matter that Thrall was vouched for by others in the Alliance - Varian wouldn’t hear of it.
. - For quite a while, he was just a bad father to Anduin. Granted, aforementioned trauma played a significant part of that friction, but his was the responsibility to rise above that and be there. Instead, his son basically sought refuge from Varian’s temper and disappointment, and tutelage with dwarves and draenei instead of in Stormwind.
He does come around to grow, as I said, and a lot of his flaws and weaknesses are handled either in novels or ingame since around MoP and onwards. But the guy had demons aplenty to wrestle with.
I miss it a bit, it was all so innocent in a way. I guess we as a whole were more optimistic at the time, even if the early 90’s were a pit of (wonderful) depression with Nirvana, Pearl Jam etc
Did you see the serie De Verschrikkelijke Jaren 80? It’s heartwrenching but it did the 80’s so well lol.
And the right acts like empathy is a mortal sin and treating others with respect or compassion isn’t manly. I know which side I choose.
‘Veronika’ had frequent stuff like that late at night in the Netherlands.
Don’t ask me how I know that.
I never watched that stuff! I swear!
To me that made Varian an interesting character. I thought Anduin was as well, because he was such a huge contrast compared to all the grizzled veterans.
I think tho that we lack that contrast a bit these days. And instead of Anduin being his own kind of man in his own kind of way, we suddenly have quite a few men like that in the stories with the more grizzled types phased out, in retirement, dead, not actively participating and expressing that role.
Even though I agree with you, I believe balance between the two sides is the best thing.
To keep with the topic: Because yes, at the moment that balance is off in WoW.
The issue with that is that can lead to toxic masculinity.
When boys/men get presented unrealistic, unhealthy ideas of what it is ‘to be a man’ it can lead to issues; which has been proven to be a real thing.
And yet BG3 is one of those games that had brilliant story telling, excellent world building and amazing game play. All the while you could check a tick box to block nudity. My sister in law made a comment about that the only thing extra should have been tick box for the romance/smack talk. That way you could not “accidently on purpose” trigger the wrong romance scenes. She would have also like a parental control with a password to ensure those tick boxes stayed when she left the room.
Then you got absolute filth like Andrew Tate teaching young men to degrade and physically harm women to show “dominance” and the buffon in the white house is trying to help him, it’s a world rn.
Balance? when you balance with the right you end up removing minorities and anyone who disagrees
I don’t believe that’s a fair assessment. That wouldn’t be balance anyway.
if this thread derails. Its not on me… Swear to god.
