WW Axe vs. Fiery War Axe? Arms Warr

Greetings.

As the title suggests, what is better for levelling as an Arms Warrior (once level 35 is reached)?

WW Axe -
102 - 154 Damage Speed 3.60

(35.6 damage per second)
+15 Strength
+14 Stamina

Fiery War Axe -
93 - 141 Damage Speed 2.90

(40.3 damage per second)
Requires Level 35
Chance on hit: [Hurls a fiery ball that causes 155 to 198 Fire damage and an additional 24 damage over 6 sec.]

Have you already got the Fiery War Axe? If you’re deciding whether to buy it with your hard-earned gold, then leave it regardless.

I’m not sure what proc chance of the fire axe is but 15 strength is almost certainly better, so you’ll be doing bigger hits with the whirlwind. And +14 stamina is great for leveling having extra 140 health which is probably like 10% of your HP pool.

Hey pal thanks for the thoughts.

I should clarify that I have the fiery war axe in the bank as it dropped while levelling my main.

Although str and hp is nice, does quicker swing time on FWA not = more rage = more dps?

I’d sell the axe on the auction house and use the Whirlwind Axe. You might do a bit more damage with the Fiery War Axe, but the stat bonuses from the WW make up for that. It’s one of the stronger quest rewards in the game for a reason.

Generally speaking, why waste the money you could potentially earn by selling it for a relatively minor improvement? Even if the Fiery War Aye is slightly better in terms of damage output, it’s not that big a deal and you’ll likely replace it in your 40s or 50s anyway.

Leave it in the bank for now.
If you’re not desperate for cash, I would sell the Fiery War Axe at a later time when people are levelling alts and in general have more gold to spend on such luxury items… or BGs.

Also, in addition to the Whirlwind Axe, you’ll get another weapon from a quest in Scarlet Monastery

Edit: Disregard the above. Apparently it is an alliance-only quest.

He’s Forsaken. Bonebiter is an Alliance only reward. He can get Ravager from the Monestary, though:

Yes it has higher DPS. But the hits are higher (particularly helped with +15 str compared to +0 on the fire axe) and as Arms, a lot of your damage is based on weapon damage, not weapon DPS. For example, Heroic Strike, Overpower, and bleeding wounds do damage based on the number on the hit rather than the speed / dps.

Even if it’s considered an upgrade, it would not be that much and so I would sell it and use the money for better things.

Stick to WW axe, u gona use it till 45 or more if u dont get random world drop or spend a lot of golds.

Dps means verry little to you as warr, at 40 you get mortal strike, and this spell along with other scales with weapon max dmg, not dps, so basicly slower=stronger=better .

Bonus str and stam is just a sweet bonus to it .

Side note : both weapons are fine and difference wont be any significant, but when u wanna get maximum out of it, stick to ww

The AS difference is huge… it all depends on the proc chance really, and I don’t know it. I would wait until 43, sell it and buy Executioner’s Cleaver.

2.9 is a good speed for fury MH, not for arms 2hander. All your abilities depend on average weapon damage, not its speed. Stick to WW until mid 40s when you can buy executioner’s cleaver.

Sell the axe, get fiery wep enchant from that quest in badlands. Problem solved mate. + Your hit chance is quite low while lvling with no %hit gear. You’ll be replacing that axe with the SM quest reward anyway.

oooh… The quest is alliance only?
I’d completely forgotten that. Thanks for correcting me.

Have you considered the weapon speed normalization?

What’s that?

Its the thing that made all abilities that are “weapon damage” to be calculated from the DPS of the weapon instead of the damage of the weapon.
So that the mortal strikes, overpowers and whirlwinds would be much stronger with fiery war axe compared to whirlwind axe.

I’d sell it on the AH and go for ww axe.
You’ll be getting the ravager soon too so you’ll be using those 2 up until your high 40s.

Really? I thought they were based on average weapon damage. Where can I read about this “normalisation”?

So heavy hitting slow weapons are nerfed?

So all 2h weapons get their instant attacks calculated as if they were 3.3s attack.

Whats that got to do with weapon damage? U can’t calculate a damage based on speed, that make no sense.

The normalized weapon damage for instant attacks is:

normalized_damage = base_weapon_damage + (X * Attack Power / 14)

where X is:

* 1.7 for daggers
* 2.4 for other one-handed weapons
* 3.3 for two-handed weapons

So i am right, it is based on base weapon damage and nothing else. According to wowwiki

Not sure where confusion comes from.
