[A-RP] The Oaken Grove - Thornspeaker RP 🌳

As you struggle through the thick snow that falls around you your steps become heavier and harder with each crunch of the fresh-snow under foot. How long ago had you lost the path? Thirty minutes ago? An hour? The icy wind cuts through your furs and stirs the trees to creak and groan under their own weight; all the while you feel eyes upon but always in the corner of your eye. You quickly turn, but nothing! Again the feeling starts to grow as hopelessness starts to take root.

Your cries and calls for help though have not gone unheard, for the very trees you trudge past whisper on the blizzard’s breath.

Ahead of you light flickers, faint and hard to make out with its pale blue flame. As you approach a will-o'-the-wisp kindly floats around a great Oak tree, and seems to beckon you forward. Just as you near its curious icy-warmth the will-o'-the-wisp vanishes, only to appear around another Oak tree further away. With each will-o'-the-wisp does the forest begin to look more familiar until, at last, Fallhaven is in sight. As you part with the last Oak tree you turn and bow before it and though no words are spoken you feel your gratitude somehow appreciated by the wind-swept tree.

You make it to your village to share with your friends in the pub your experience with the will-o'-the-wisp’s of the Oaken forest, a tale shared by many-a-villager lost in the snow-swept nights around these parts.

High in the mountains overlooking Fallhaven a group of benevolent Thornspeakers watch the villager make their way home from the branches of a great Oak Tree. The Oaken Grove continues its vigil, unknown by many of the villagers but appreciated by all.

The Oaken Grove [IC]
Welcome to The Oaken Grove, stranger. We are a group of Thornspeakers; students and followers of the great Ulfar and proud guardians of the balance in our lands. We are a reclusive Grove, but we are not strangers from the struggles of those who call this land home. Our grove maintains a vigil over the frozen mountains and forests from the Iceveil Glacier, Gol Osigr, Arom’s Stand and the Alpine Rise down into the foothills of Athair’s Forest, Fallhaven and the Gleenbrook Homestead and its hunting grounds. Each Thornspeaker of our Grove takes the name of a tree from the forests, and to the people of Arom’s Stand, Fallhaven and Glenbrook are we often known by those names. Treat the forests with respect, and our paths need never cross.

OOC
Hello, and welcome! The Oaken Grove is a Thornspeaker RP guild based in Drustvar. We RP as a Grove with a vigil over areas in Drustvar only, but not all our RP will be confined to this region. As we ICly become aware of the other Druidic orders we’ll look to expand our knowledge of Druidism and races like the Kaldorei and Gilneans and, through them, learn of the Cenarion Circle.

Role Play:
We will participate in RP-PVP and run our own DM events. The grove will have three branches of RP to follow, and are ordered into the most common RP we’ll undertake to the least common.

Drustvar & The Mainland - As Thornspeakers we are inherently connected with Drustvar, tending to its balance and being vigilant against witches and the vengeful spirits of the Drust. Ulfar’s Den would be the home of the Guild, where we would meet, learn and teach young Thornspeakers. We would also journey to the Mainland, looking to build bridges by helping other Kul Tiran guilds and communities and joining gatherings and social events.

Druidic Kinship - Through eventual membership of the Alliance we would become aware of the Kaldorei and Gilnean Druids and would look to invite some to our grove as a first-step to learn about the wider world and the conflict beyond our shores. Sharing deep spiritual connections with nature we would look to forge strong bonds with our new Kaldorei and Gilnean allies. From this we would seek to help both races with their struggles.

The Alliance and the Battle for Azeroth - Through exposure to our new allies, especially the Kaldorei and Gilnean Druids, along with what we learn from House Waycrest and visits to Boralus we would begin to have an image of the Sylvanas’ Horde. Though our primary focus would always be to preserve the balance the actions of Sylvanas with regards to Gilneas, Teldrassil and the rising of more dead to serve her would be enough for the Grove to offer its help to both Kul Tiran orders in their battles and our Kaldorei and Gilnean druidic brothers and sisters.

The Oaken Grove theme
We RP along the line that Thornspeakers are generally highly reclusive, often being figures of mystery and story within the local communities. Thornspeakers of The Oaken Grove embody this and work to keep balance, keep the Drust and Coven threat in check and, from time to time, help the locals with things like people missing in the wilds, poor crops, harvests, healing etc. With the events of the story in the region our exposure and involvement in the lives of the locals will, gradually, become more frequent and open. We’ll join the locals of Fallhaven for a cuppa or pint in an evening around a fire but will always return to our home, the forests.

One unique feature of our Grove is our connection with the forests of Drustvar. Thornspeakers initiated into this Grove take a second “Grove Name” that becomes their nickname within the Grove. These Grove Names come from the names of tress that grow throughout the forests and embody the personality and spirit of the Thornspeaker who bares it. We can help players with their Tree Lore to help them make informed choices about their Grove Names!

Role Play Themes:

Exploration - Learning about the world beyond Drustvar, cultivating our place in wider Kul Tiran society and a wider Druidic community.

Vigil - Although our grove will occasionally roam with the ebb and flow of the war and the needs of our friends and allies Drustvar will be our home. There we continue to tend to the balance, and maintain our vigil against witches and the resurgence of the Drust.

Living off the Land - A big emphasis will be on living in the wilds, with rp centered around hunting, gathering, getting resources to survive. Players will be encouraged to RP a profession/ specialism that compliments their work as Thornspeaker. This could range from a cook or casual fisherman to an alchemist or leatherworker. Waste not want not will be a philosophy of the grove.

Legacy - As Thornspeakers we continue a long legacy from the Drust who refused to make war against the early Kul Tirans to the first calls of the Thornspeaker in our ancestors. We continue that legacy, honouring our past while looking to train new generations of Thornspeakers and will have opportunities for characters just starting out on their path with Thornspeaker Druidism.

Organisation:
Oak (Skogr) leads The Oaken Grove as First Speaker.

The Grove is then divided into different branches, each branch is lead by a “Speaker”:

The Bark - Thornspeakers who are Shield Paws or Iron Claws of the grove. They are the might of the Grove, defending it with paw, claw and tooth.

The Roots - Deeply spiritual individuals with a connection to the forest who act as healers of flesh, bark and earth.

The Leaves - The mystic branch of The Oak Grove, they draw power not only from the Forest but from the very starlight that shines upon them. Astrology, prophecy and magic are their gifts to the Grove.

Uniforms:
There is not a set uniform, but there are plenty of Thornspeaker NPCs to give an idea of how a Thornspeaker should dress and this sets our “Theme”. Clothing should be earthy, practical, and reflect the “person of the wilds” nature of a Thornspeaker. Robes, wool, leather and items with branches, plantlife all help lend themselves to this. Items should be generally be darker in shade, not bright green.

Recruitment:
If you are interested in joining then feel free to drop myself a message in game, or here on the forum if you have any questions. We can discuss your application and how your character might fit in with our Thornspeaker grove. We’ve also made a community for Thornspeakers in general and will organise general Thornspeaker Themed events for everyone alongside our guild content.

My parents could hear the sea calling to them, and that was why they’d been sailors before settling down together. I could hear it too, but I couldn’t hear it. All throughout my childhood I walked a path well worn by my folks and their folks before them stretching back hundreds of years. From our cabin I could see the oceans in the distance, but always the voices were behind me, drawing me to the woods.

I grew up in a small mountain village over Arom’s Stand, surrounded by lush dense forests of Oak and Pine where the mountain tops kept the stars company and fresh snow fell nearly every day. The smell of fresh pine-logs on a fire sends me back to my childhood, even now I’m a grown man.

Our neighbours had a boy, my age, and we’d play together every day. We’d play in the snow, in the fields of wildflowers in the foothills, build secret bases and explore the forests and caves of our mountain home. We were inseparable, still are to this day. Called him “Thorn” I did after the great Hawthorn tree, and he called me “Oak”.

I’ll never forget the night we heard the call.

My folks had fallen asleep by the fire and snow was falling thick outside.

“Oak” I heard a voice call on the wind’s breath and almost beyond the realms of my control I instinctively turned to peer out at the forest through our frosted window. The scant light from our small window shed only a weak yellow light on the snow falling outside, the full moon though cast light behind the darkness of the forest without revealing a single tree. Before I knew it I was standing on our porch, and hadn’t even grabbed my furs. I just stood in the cold night and listened.

“Oak, it is time you see…” I squinted, my eyes being pulled between the shifting shadows of the windswept forest.

“Not with your eyes, but your soul. Close your eyes… and walk.” It struck me the words in my head were not in Common, my thoughts and own voice inside too spoke a tongue I’d never heard but knew as though it were my mother tongue. I closed my eyes and surrendered to the forest.

My sweet stars, for the first time in my life I felt I could truly see, as though I had been looking through some veil my whole life until that point only to have it lifted and to see the world was made of colour and star light! I could see every tree, every leaf around me, and could see them inside me. Their strength, their deep roots and tall branches reaching out into the world through me. I could hear their whispers, and they could hear mine.

I walked the forest not as a Kul Tiran, nor a child or a boy but as something greater… I was home. My feet crunched through the thick snow as I approached a grove I’d never once found in all my years playing amongst those trees, and emerging from the treeline near me was Thorn.

Our eyes were closed, but we could see. We knew the other was there, and something took root within us that day. In the middle of the Grove stood a great creature of wood, bark, branches, leaves and antlers. It saw us, and smiled and without thinking to we bowed in return of its welcome.

“Oak, and Thorn. We’ve been waiting for you, lads.” the creature spoke in the common tongue and we opened our eyes.

All around us was a chorus of bristling bushes and creaking trees as more figures emerged. Some were in forms strange to our eyes, others walked on two legs and looked like us. Again the language of the forest stirred within us both:

“Welcome, my young Thornspeakers.”

My name is Skogr Winteroak, but these days folks simply call me “Oak”. I am the First Speaker of The Oaken Grove and I am a Thornspeaker. We Thornspeakers stand vigil over all of Druskvar, and my Grove in particular safeguards the Mountain peaks and forests and the foothills to Fallhaven. Tred with care, respect the forest, keep the balance and we shall be friends.
I am a Fallhaven hunter myself in the specialty of Leather-working. I look forwards to interacting with you, the concept itself seems to fit perfectly with the present expansion.
This seems like a very good initiative. We hope you manage to get it off the ground, and are certainly looking forward to see you about in Drustvar!
This sounds like a lovely concept! I will certainly want to interact with you IC and OOC, seeing as my character has a wish to learn more about the Ways of the Thornspeakers, and the use of the druidic magic on the other side of the life-death spectrum.

I will be looking forward to seeing you ICly!
Thanks for all the positive feedback folks, and a special thanks to Tirassian and the Fallhaven for reaching out to help develop my idea and propose some ideas for rping together and helping bring some more life to Druskvar. I can't wait to get stuck in with you all!

This sounds really good to me, feel free to drop me a /w in game!
Hello!

Just a few updates:

1) The Original Post has been updated with new information, a new layout and a bit of a story to set the tone and feel of the guild, I hope you like it!

2) I've updated the second post with an orgin story of how Oak (Skogr) first heard the call of the Thornspeakers. Again I think it helps to set the tone and feel for the guild and I hope you enjoy it.

3) There is room for the character "Thorn", from the short story on the second post, to be an actual character played by a player. Thorn would be Oak's life-partner and a defender of the Grove in a more practical way. If you would like to know more about this character and would like to discuss fleshing them out some more please let me know!

Thanks again, and strength of the forest go with you!
I was hoping a Thornspeaker guild would appear for a while now. I am very glad to see one set up and I'd like to wish you the best. Perhaps our guilds could even interact at some point!

That would be great! An important step for us will be coming into contact with the druidic communities of our new allies, and the wider world beyond Drustvar. We should sit down and think about some sort of exploration event, with druids of the Hand of Cenarius perhaps following rumours into the shadows of Drustvar in search of the Thornspeakers? From there we have a guide to the wider druidic world.

You'd be more than welcome to drop me a message in game if you had any questions about getting into it?

I've taken the step to make Skogr into a Gilnean so I can start to RP him as a Kul Tiran Thornspeaker while in human form. Given that he's more of a healer and tree-whisperer this will do for now until we get Kul Tirans. If anyone is interested in doing the same and would be interested in joining up let me know!

Strength of the forest go with you!
Already spotted these fellows wandering about the woods around Fallhaven! Certainly some excellent rp potential here! Looking forward to seeing what comes of it!
The Oaken Grove is going to be developing a brief "treatise" on Tree Lore, drawing from our own real-world druidic mythology from celtic and pre-celtic people's worship of trees. The treatise will:

- Explain the spiritual significance of major trees and the virtues they embody for the guild
- Explain magical applications for the use of those trees and their leaves/ bark
- Detail a few myths and legends of our own grove's history

We're started recruiting, by taking people who rp as Thornspeakers via being Gilnean druids OOC. If you're interested in this let us know!

We have two "pre-made" characters also looking for players. Their Grove Names would be:

Thorn - Childhood friend and life-partner of Oak and Speaker of the "Bark" of the Grove (The combat Thornspeakers, Shield Paws - bear form, and Iron Claws- cat form)

Ash - Speaker of the Leaves, the mystic branch of the Grove which would roughly equate to astrologers and thus "Owlkin" forms.

Anyone interested in exploring those options and would like more information drop me a message ingame.
Oh, we're way past peeking, old bear
Been interacting with this folk quite a lot on my Fallhaven peasant alt.
Lovely folks, really. They're always a pleasure to have around IC and OOC.

Their RP is a very "down to earth" approach to nature, to which one can relate with ease. They take great care to explain how the forest works and in which ways it can be tended, trying to bring a positive outlook on the wild to people hidden behind walls of stone.
On the other hand, it doesn't make their fantasy "plain" as there is quite the use of nature magic that isn't an over the top show of power. Curious acorns, visions in dreams to name a few.

They're very involved in their interactions with others, to the point of RPing outside the game to maintain a "private" and more "personnal" approach to pleas they might recieve IC. I was pleased to wake up with messages of "dreams" they sent me at night.

Give them some love, they deserve it.

I’ve been looking at this thread for a while now and finally took the time to actually properly read through it and I’m thoroughly enticed! I’ve been looking for a guild for my hunter here for a while and thus my question, do you accept based solely on class or do you accept folks based on concept? My hunter is very much not solely a hunter and falls in line with Thornspeaker druidism and traditional hunter culture.

How politically close are you to the alliance? Or is this an area as of yet unresolved? I only ask because it could be said that the thorn speakers would always place Drustvar first and other ties second.

So, for example, if you were to encounter say a shaman of a horde race in the woods, is it out and out “ger off our laynd!” Or would you try and establish why they’re there? Be open to communicate? I’m thinking in the case of individuals not on active horde business/jobs but rather personal journeys etc?

Wh- whaat? Two partners?

I don’t think they ment romantically involved.

Hello! Apologies in my delay in responding to this! In truth I had not expected non-Thornspeakers to come forward wishing to join, however we see in the questing that local hunters/ rangers do work alongside the Thornspeakers and they seem to have a good relationship. I think it would be fine for you to join with a hunter who, though not a Thornspeaker, followed their way of life and ideals and would love to explore this within the Oaken Grove.

The Grove, like the people of Drustvar, are guarded against strangers and outsiders. However we’re more ready to work with others, and while we are bound to the land we also have a place in the fabric of our land as a cultural and political landscape: families in the villages, links to the local ruling house who are in turn pledged to Boralis. The Alliance is also home to other Druids that we would be exposed to far sooner than say a Horde Shaman. Still closed and guarded, but willing to lend a hand if needed.

Oak, as a person, would not jump the gun if there was a Shaman or other type who appeared to know the ways of the land and nature. On an individual basis he can get on with most people, but he would still be a product of his upbringing and that was on tales of the Orcs and the First, Second and Third wars.

Actually a continuity error. Oak’s lifer-partner was originally called Elm. Following more research into the trees thought sacred to ancient Britons and Druids of that time I changed it to Thorn (Hawthorn) so he along with Oak and Ash would form the three most sacred trees. I’ll run back through and make sure it is all “Thorn”. Thorn as the character, as yet unplayed, is Oak’s lifepartner and leader of the “Bark”, or the more combat orientated Thornspeakers. Sorry for the confusion!

If anyone is interested in joining the Oaken Grove I’m starting to get more active as the race unlock comes closer. Head over to our Discord and we can discuss your ideas for your characters and the tree-name you would identify them with! Mail me in game and I’ll post you the link.
