Afaik religious words are against the policy, but they’re not very consistent and only do something if it gets enough reports.

“Poes” means “cat” in the dutch language, but in my native language, afrikaans, it is an really offensive word. Do I go around flagging people with the name “Poes”? No. Do I laugh at them. Yes!

I personally don’t have a problem with that name, I am british, however or rather to quote how Blizzard would answer a question like this … “That said”, I can understand how some people could conceivably take offence, perhaps go with @Punyelf’s suggestion, alter the spelling slightly for example clHalalnew or whatever you choose My first char on classic is a Tauren Druid called Strekilnewcl, why, because my first ever character I created in WoW back in 2006/2007 was a Tauren Druid called Strekil, it’s a stupid name but it’s important to me, just modify the name slightly and enjoy classic, in my opinion.
I’d not name yourself that if I were you, you’ll just end up being reported a second time. Most English-speaking people will regard your name as meaning the ritual slaughter and preparation of meat for those practising the Islamic faith and consider it unsuitable for a videogame.
Languages are a funny thing, a single word can mean something quite innocent in one language, but something quite different in another; and in your case I’m afraid you fell foul of something similar.

And I met a player named after a vulgar Serbian word for the virile member, but we don’t play in Afrikaans or Serbian servers now do we.
I will agree with you there @Grupp, in an international multiplayer game, names can be taken the wrong way, even if there was no intention behind the choice, I have fallen foul of that once or twice over the past decade or so.

Once again, halal is too an English word used by English-speaking Muslims and non-Muslims alike, and in English speaking servers English language rules apply.
Sorry, but no, its not an english word. By your logic “haram” should also be an english word then.
As the guy already said. Halál ment death in HIS language. Why should he be forced too rename when he made a name in his own language and not the word “halal” that you lot seem too be so offended by. So tell me. Why does “it’s a religious word” trumph his language where it is just a word for death? And I gotta say, it is a fitting name for a warlock.

On an unrelated topic, can you educate me about that. I thought that every English word should use only English alphabet. How is english-speaking person can even type that word, when there’s no é on standard english keyboard?
Read up. Exactly, haram is also an English word. Open a dictionary yourself, if someone you know owns one.
I named one of my characters Lookatmybutt. RPers didn’t appreciate the name, so I was flagged for a name change. The new name I picked was “Lookatmybutt”.
This happened 3 times and then I got a 2 day ban. So yeah, the more you do something the bigger your punishment is.
HOWEVER: if you contact a GM and argue your case that your name isn’t offensive and/or isn’t breaking any of the naming rules, then you keep your name.
Not only do you keep it, but any “flags” you got from it are removed and all future reports on the subject are essentially thrown in the bin.
Yep, to me Halal is indeed also a English word my interpretation of this word is meat specially prepared in a certain way for people of the Muslim faith, the same can also be said for Kosha which is meat prepared in a certain way for people of the Jewish faith, I personally do not have a problem with the words.

Because on English servers names are supposed to be understood by English-speaking people? I guess that you can name your character Negro on Spanish server, but you probably won’t be able to keep that name on US server, that’s for sure. Context matters.
It doesn’t matter what it means in any other language. It should be common sense offensive, religious, or other types of names explicitly regulated by Blizzard’s rules (you may or may not like them, but they’re there) cannot be policed on the grounds of meaning something else in some other language or meaning something to the person because maybe their now deceased grandma happened to call them c*** affectionately and oh, they miss grandma. All that’s irrelevant to Blizzard.

The fact that you know what the word translates to in english and you dont have a problem with it…still does not make it an word native to the english language.

Seems like none of you have heard of “loan words” (seriously, google it).
It’s a sociological process that *is one part of the ways that shapes languages and changes them over time, including but not limited to the use of loan words taking root in other languages.
