Beta UI and Addons Update

Immediately in this first day of testing, we’ve seen feedback on how currently, there’s a complete lockdown on the ability for addons to parse chat and addon-comms channels while in instances. We’re seeing it break addons that support loot councils, break timers, and other benign communications (e.g. sharing raid notes or M+ keystone information).

We agree that this is starting out excessively broad, and we’re going to make changes to only apply the new logic while there is an active raid encounter or M+ run underway. Our goal will be to make it so that tools that facilitate sharing information before or after combat won’t be impacted.

And we’ll update our Beta development notes when the above is implemented.

When making changes could you look at two more use cases?

  1. Tracking achievement progress for Glory of the raid achievements. If I understood the addon changes correctly the achievement progress addons will definitely break. This wouldn’t be so bad if the ingame achievement tracking for these achievements was good enough. From Manaforge Omega two giant pains that would occur in tracking with these changes would be the Plexus Sentinel and Fractillus achievements.

  2. Tracking the interrupts of group members in m+. Whether or not they have their interrupt on cooldown. It’s already a challenge to properly coordinate interrupts when on voice. We’ve really needed a Weak Aura that displays whose interrupts are available for use. There will really need to be a way to track this through the base client in Midnight.

Unsure if I’m missing something, but I can’t get the sound alerts in the cooldown manager to make any sounds at all. I’ve tried multiple options, include text to speech, but no sounds are being produced.

Nameplate Stacking
The nameplate stacking default behavior is still really bad. I haven’t made any adjustments to my nameplate settings yet and out of the box it’s not very usable. Here’s an example: https:// imgur .com/a/NmTyiCJ (forums won’t let me post a link so remove the spaces)
I have 2 targets right in front of me but instead of the nameplates stacking on top of each other like a neatly organised list, the Shadowmonger’s nameplate is way off to the lefthand side giving the impression that the mob isn’t right in front of me at all.

Item comparison on by default
I remember reading notes about this somewhere but I can’t find it in the Alpha notes. Either way, please add an option to turn the automatic comparison off again, as far as I can see there is none at the moment.

Nameplate stacking is an absolute fiasco currently. I’m certain you’re aware, just to put more emphasis on it. Plates that could be perfectly still bounce around half of the screen when on the move.

Personal Resource Display

The personal resource display show personal cooldown functionality (see https ://imgur .com/a/2z6UmoJ) that neatly sticks to the top of the personal resource display needs to be restored. The cooldown manager + edit mode layout is not flexible in the same way.

You took it away when the cooldown manager was introduced, the community was unhappy with that and you restored it through a hotfix pretending it was a bug and now the functionality is gone again. Please don’t take something that works well away

Show Nameplates Options

Can we get an option to show nameplates ONLY in combat?

Right now, neutral mobs (yellow HP bar) show all the time, at least during testing on Exiles Reach. All enabled nameplates show at all times. We really need a combat-only option.

Nameplate and other UI functionality in PvP

I´ve tested the new nameplates in skirmishes on the Beta. It is a big improvement from the old nameplates, but it still need some work - especially in regards to PvP.

Cooldown usage

I think many agrees with me that seeing the actual cooldown timer does not add a fun aspect to the game, but something that is clearly missing is the ability to see when someone is actively using cooldowns. Many cooldowns lack a clear visual component (Evasion, Shadow Dance, Avatar, Devine Protection and so on). Even very visual spells like Avenging Wrath often disappear in the other visuals going on.

It is clear that something like BigDebuffs is needed on the nameplate to actually see what´s going on. Many players, myself included do not mainly use the enemy player frame to get this information - we use the nameplates. I hope it is possible to open the API for BigDebuffs and that you also create your own version.

Debuffs on nameplates

We need to be able to filter the debuffs we have on a target. As an assa rogue I have multiple bleeds, poisions etc. that completely fills the debuff space. Knowing how many stacks I have of Wound Poison is not valuable information for me.

CC visuals on nameplates

I think the customization options for CC needs some work. I personally would like to scale this up further so it´s easier to see.

Arena frames

The arena frames need some love. Customization is lackluster. The DR tracking is very small and hard to see. I think you should look to what Gladius and sArena have been doing for years and get some inspiration from them. They have been essentially mandatory for PvP - and there is a reason for that.

Kick tracking

I think my caster friends would be very upset if I didn´t mention kick tracking. Especially if “precog” contiunes to be a part of the game, they need some sort of kick tracking. I can already tell on the Beta that many more of my kicks land compared to retail even when I have been playing skirmishes against very high rated streamers. It is clear that they are struggeling without being able to see if kick is on cooldown.

There’s probably already a chorus of feedback on this, but let me lend my voice to the choir:

The nameplates as they currently are are not nearly good enough.

And this has nothing to do with doing stuff that is not allowed anymore.

  1. The main problem right now is the utter lack of proper stacking of the name plates. They dance all over the place when you move, but that’s not even the worst thing. I was in a Delve yesterday with a ton of minor plant enemies, and my screen was just one huge mess of sideways dancing name plates, with NO idea or indication whether the plate was of an enemy right in front of me or 30 yards back or way off to the left or right.

This needs to be fixed and fixed properly, cause for a class with many dots, especially if we play Affliction, this is quite literally unplayable.

  1. I also need to be able to see basic things like if I have a Curse on an enemy or not. Especially with the new talent Foulmouth and the new ability Blight of… I need to be able to see which enemies I debuffed and which I did not. I know there’s a back and forth with certain people wanting to be able to see certain things on their name plate and want to ignore certain others. So hopefully you can just let us customize nameplates like we do the Cooldown Manager. I don;t need info that I’m not supposed to have, I want info that is available, in the place I need it, on the nameplate. Because with things like Curses, if it is not on the name plate, I have to actually select the mob and look at the target frame to see if I cursed it or not.

  2. On the other side of the spectrum, it would be nice if I did NOT see the dots and abilities that other players put on mobs, or at least have the option to turn that on or off. Keep them on the target frame, but not on the name plate.

  3. Another really important piece of feedback is that I feel that the stock UI nameplates are hard to click on. Clicking on name plates like I am used to on live does not work and I seem to need to be very precise and even then it sometimes needs 2 or more clicks for the click on the name plate to actually register. I can imagine this is annoying for every class, but as a Dot class that wants to tag names plates and swap quickly this is a disaster.

  4. To not be entirely negative in this post, I do like the way the new name plates look and the way the cast bar works now. There’s definitely some good in the way you changed things.

I just don’t want to end up in a situation where the ONLY answer for name plates is to not use the stock UI. So I hope very much that the Name plates can have some quality work done on them to make them work more like they do on Live right now. Especially since I heard that the way the name plates dance and refuse to stack properly is something only the devs can fix as this is something not available to addon creators.

Thank you for your time.

I think they should work there more with sound design such as giving each unique major class cooldown a more distinctive “enemy sound” for PvP.

To pull examples from Destiny 2, sure they are “super” abilities, but the closest we have in WoW are major Cooldowns like defensives and spells akin to Avenging Wrath on Paladin.

Those should sound more “powerful” when used by an opponent (or just in general). And of course people should be able to hear those sounds on longer ranges.

And speaking about Sound designs, I think different rarities should have different pick-up sounds on items. The more rare the item, the more “powerful” it should sound as well. Another example video from Destiny 2.

I do think this would be a good addition on top of my previous suggestion. I do have a couple of concerns with relying only audio. BGs would still be a mess if this was the only way to tell if someone’s using cooldowns, also many players do enjoy listening to music or streams etc when they play. I don’t personally but I can imagine this being a issue for many.

It is also worth nothing that many spells have a specific sound, like Fade for example. Even though it has a sound that i recognize, i rarely hear it when a ton of other sounds are playing - which happens in pretty much every content that is not a 1v1.

I mean, taking Destiny 2 as example, in the “gamefeed” (bottom left) the game says “[Name] casts [Ability name]” in big letters.

And while WoW doesn’t have anything like that, Blizzard could add a 2-D/3-D sprite animation layered on top of the player model that visually looks like a pulse radiating outwards for more visual clarity. The color could be custom selectable in the “gameplay enhancement” settings. By giving the player that option, they can pick a color that is distinctively more visible for them.

Personally I would pick red of course, since it signifies in PvP that an opponent (red) is using a major ability.

Please add the Bigdebuff addon so I can see debuffs/buffs directly inside the target portrait! I’m finding it practically impossible to play without missing a spell lock, stun, or ability on an immune target. In PvP, such a flaw is too devastating

Please add an option in cooldown manager to insert a different sound effect for a specific ability than the available ones? I’ve been using the sound effects from the old Warlock addon “Necrosis LDC” since several years, such as the demonic “Shadowtrance!” voice when the Nightfall proc is activated, and I’d like to keep using them

Nameplates are imposible to keep track of in the current beta ui i tested.
When i pull 4-5 packs of mobs in the Meadery dungeon and choose to stack nameplates, the nameplates move across my screen from left to right in a column-like pattern. It becomes impossible to accurately track my mouse and select the correct target for single-target abilities.

If i disable stacking, the nameplates instead overlap each other, making it very difficult to see what is happening behind them.

Additionally, losing aggro is currently indicated by a flame-like animation above the nameplate. It would be much clearer and more intuitive if the nameplate itself changed color to reflect aggro status. Visual style is important, but clarity in fast-paced situations is even more crucial. At the very least, please give us the option.

I sincerely hope this issue is addressed: otherwise, it will likely require addons again, and i would really prefer to play the game without addons.
It raises the question of what the purpose of all these changes was if the end result still requires addons.

I think just knowing someone used a cooldown and not which one, makes the game much more difficult for beginners and seasoned players alike. It is important to able to tell if a paladin used Devine Protection or Bubble. I don’t think a message in chat is the right way to do that personally. Also if you then see that their “CD” glow is on, you then have to look at the chat or the player frames to see which one? Seems overly complicated.

No, because each spell should have a unique visual. And most classes don’t have more than 2-3 major CDs usually. That’s not so many to remember in Arena Games.

As for Battlegrounds, they are bound to be chaotic. It won’t hurt much there.

Cause everybody seams to be important enough to make a new topic i will now try to collect feedback topics about UI.

This is maybe the most important change in next addon and defetinely to important to miss feedback cause everybody makes an new topic.

Funny part that´s only last 5 days.
Is no fun every open a own Topic cause this way many informations and feedback are lost.

Welp, didnt even register this post as a feedback thread, as all the others has “feedback:” prefix. I dont think its because people think theyre more “important” when they create a new topic. Try to spin it in a more positive way, its nice that people actually take time to provide feedback.

But thanks for including my post!

I know it out of personal work you ignore all topics not inbound to original topic cause to go through forum and get a bit here and a bit there is a real time intensive work and feedback can be overseen. If everything is in one place time is reduced and everything is seen.

Btw it´s the only UI topic marked with Blizzard mark and community manager posted something  That´s why i collected here.

We need to be able change size of buffs and debuffs. Or even better able to move them around party frames.

They look a bit small at the moment.
